Sunday Mail

If I could give less than one star, I would. I can’t handle right wing propaganda served on a plate as ‘news’. Being from the US, I see a lot of this and expected Australia’s media to be different (although I’m not sure why since the Sunday Mail is owned by the same media magnate as Fox News in the US). Aside from the right wing bias, celebrity gossip should not be in newspapers — BIG pet peeve of mine.

I’m not a fan of Rupert Murdoch owned media such as the Advertiser and Sunday Mail. It tends to have very biased opinions about political events. They sensationalise things quite badly (albeit not as bad as Fox News) and all it is good for is the tv guide, which I hardly watch much of these days anyway.

Sunday Mail is much better than the Advertiser during the week. Much better editorials and world news.
Instead of front page on Jack Black playing frisby in Vic Square, you’ll actually see real news. It’s layered with special interest pull outs such as Body and Soul with engrossing articles like ‘Five ways to work out at the beach’.
It’s good for the TV Guide, Weather, and screening times. That’s it really.

Personally I love the Sunday Mail (2^nd best to Saturday’s Advertiser though purely based on content). I do love the tv guide inside but find I just look at the EPG on the screen nowadays rather than the book. But sometimes the teenager likes to try and do the crosswords in there.
I love the local news aspect of the paper. They cover all important local news as well important world news you should maybe know about. They also have some info on some country events or news, which I like to read about.
There’s also some great sections with stuff to do or discounts on things, especially in school holidays.
They do some great «special features» as well when required due to the enormity of a particular story to ourselves, it’s readers.
I, in fact, get it delivered every week and at a cheaper price than I can buy it for from the shops and it is there when I wake up. Easy peasy.

Damn, they do a good TV Guide. Sure, the lineup can now be accessed by a click of the Television remote, but then how else would I be able to read the quality column ‘The Big Question’, where people write in with important queries such as ‘Who was that hot old guy in that movie ‘Gigi?’ Is he still alive, and if so, can I have a copy of the DVD and maybe his home address?’ And, ‘That McDreamy guy on Grey’s Anatomy, any idea what shampoo he uses?’
Another fave of mine is ‘Unpacked’, where the writer summarises TV series for people who are stupid, eg: ‘Two and a Half Men is a sitcom about two men and a boy living together’ and ‘Private Practice is a show set in a medical clinic.’ I have been getting the TV Guide every Sunday my whole darn life and technology will not put paid to this tradition.
As for the rest of the paper, it’s alright I guess.

I really feel that the Sunday Mail is a little late coming. I don’t really need it after I’ve acquired the Saturday Advertiser because it has all the news I need for a whole week. I am a little irritated with this paper though since they removed Farside from the comic section, pretty dumb move.
The Sunday Mail will give you a TV Guide, but who needs it? Just press guide on your remote control and voila, if you don’t have this function then you should probably update.
The only time you’ll find me reading the Sunday Mail is when I’ve scored it from my neighbours driveway, gotta love freebies.
