Followed a friend here who got a recommendation from locals. Arrived on a Friday mid afternoon. It was a low time, no problem with getting a seat. The food and service was excellent! Ordered grilled scallops, Tasmanian salmon special, and garlic bread. Got a table near the cook and saw the fresh seafood lunch being made. It was more than enough for two people. Would highly recommend the place for lunch.

Simple, laid back and efficient. I haven’t eaten here for years but just popped in on a whim. Place was over half full at 7:30pm on a cold Thursday night with more people coming in as we were seated. There’s no pretentiousness here, either with the décor, on the menu or from the staff. They just let the food do the talking. I had fried soft shell crab as an entrée and the grilled Moreton Bay bugs for my main. The sauces are served on the side so you choose whether to drown your food in them or experience the tasty seafood au naturel. Both were excellent, although for the price I would’ve expected the quantity of bugs to be slightly larger as most places I’ve been to normally serve three(six halves) rather than two of the critters. The rest of the family had the salmon and the kids meal, which was from all reports was more than acceptable. I’m not sure whether they’re hand cut, but their preference to serve very chunky chips piping hot is terrific, as much less oil soaks in. I know this because I didn’t feel the need to wash my meal down with a lot of water afterwards which can often be the case with seafood which is too greasy. The service was very efficient and methodical and the staff friendly. What more can I say? If you’re looking for airs and graces and fancy food then this isn’t the place for you. However if a great meal where simplicity goes hand in hand with bringing out the flavours of the food is your cup of tea, at a reasonable price(really not much more than an average pub meal), then do yourself a favour and give Paul’s a try.

It’s a Monday public holiday and the sun in shining. Eateries are full to overflowing or shut. Thankfully there is Gouger Street and Paul’s is just opening for lunch. The waiters haven’t arrived yet but the chef assures us the wine menu is always open so he enthusiastically takes our drink orders. I must admit fish and chips weren’t what I had in mind for a spontaneous lunch, but a Piccolo of sparkling later, freshly crumbed scallops on a plate and the sun shining on our footpath table I’m hooked. The others had crumbed prawns, salt and pepper squid, a mixed salt and pepper plate and we shared a simple but fresh salad. All good. I do wonder where the traditional white bread and butter has gone though. It used to be a part of a students main diet I’m sure. Paul’s is fresh, simple food, done well. ps I’m impressed Rockford wines are on the menu — they don’t give serving rights to just anyone!

Good seafood does not need to be bombarded with spices or mixed up with 20 odd ingredients to produce a good dish. Simple is often the best way to go, and that is exactly what they do at Pauls. I have been going to Pauls with my family since I was young enough to think that the best seafood going around was a battered crab stick! Although I still don’t mind the odd bit of processed fish fried to buggery, my tastes have matured significantly and I do appreciate a good piece of fish treated with respect. Some may see Pauls as an over priced fish n chip shop, but that is not the case. I mean, they do sell Fish and Chips and they are more expensive than a take away… Well, I guess that is exactly what they are! One thing that should be of note though, over the years the ‘best’ seafood place in town has changed many times, but Pauls is consistently in the top ten. That says it all for me!

Pauls Seafood has been servicing Adelaide for over 60 years with wonderfully cooked seafood. Think upscale fish and chips. The fish is always fresh, and cooked perfectly. In particular the King George Witing rocks my world. The service is really good, the staff are friendly and helpful in letting you know the specials, etc, and the ambiance is comfortable and friendly.

Paul’s is a great seafood café, simple, well prepared delights from the ocean in a casual dining atmosphere. The Blue and white colour scheme is inviting, the staff friendly and service quick. There is a small alfresco dining area out the front on Gouger St as well as a spacious interior.
