Chef is from east Malaysia n unfortunately we were too fussy n the dishes listed didn’t entice us n we took a long time to decide. The blachan kangkong was not authentic enough for us as it lacked the blachan taste, but the baba roast duck was the best of all the dishes we ordered. Overall it was not the best we have had. Supposed we were expecting the ‘real baba’ and there were too many Chinese dishes on the menu n not enough ‘baba’ dishes. When we asked the owner for recommendations, he could only suggest the roast duck.

A new start up on Moonta Street, this restaurant is sure to delight! Mixture of Malaysian and Chinese cuisine, this restaurant is clean and tidy with very helpful staff that will help you decide what you want if you’re unsure. Not much on their menu, but this is usually a good sign, as it means that they have select good dishes and they concentrate on these. This is compared to some restaurants where they will try to sell everything and hope that people will only order the Honey Chicken. There was a delicious spicy fish dish, which albeit quite expensive, was quite nice and well deserving of an extra mention. Just a note — they had not yet received their Liquor License when we visited, but I believe they were on track to obtaining it.

Baba. Peranakan Chinese and Baba-Nyonya are terms used for the descendants of late 15th and 16th-century Chinese immigrants to the Indonesian archipelago and British Malaya(now Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore). Nyonya is the term for the women and Baba for the men.(From Wiki) So this place literally meant Men’s gallery. A surprise they don’t sell clothes. Lol. Okie, back to the restaurant. Baba gallery opened rather recently if my memory serves me correctly. The cuisine offered are Malaysian food of course. Pretty simple décor, the place is big enough to house about 30 – 40 customers at any one time. Foodwise, I’ve tried their Laksa, Chicken rice, Fried Kway tiao, and Hokkien noodles. My advice, If you are going there to try these, skip the hokkien noodles. The store right opposite does it better. However, the laksa, chicken rice and kway tiao are pretty decent. Overall, the standard of the food, the short waiting time, and the generally attentive waiting staffs meant that I will be back in the near future.
