As far as music stores go, I think in Adelaide this is my favourite. This is the location of the original Allan’s Music before it merged with Billy Hyde and I’m happy to say that their store layout hasn’t changed much since the partnership. Allan’s Music has a more chilled out feel to it, and I will drop in whenever I’m in the city to head up stairs to «test» the acoustic guitars upstairs. The space is quite open on each floor and you don’t cramped. I also feel very comfortable to just grab a guitar and spend an hour or two just browsing music books on the ground floor or trying out the guitar on the next. They sell the full range of instruments that any musician would be interested in, from electric guitars to pianos, and the staff are all very friendly and helpful from my experience. This is where I got my first guitar in Adelaide so it holds a special place with me and chances are when I get my next one, it’s going to be from here as well.

I have a long love affair with Allans. I’ve spent so much time in the Melbourne store over the years, but I had absolutely no idea that there was a shop in Adelaide. Turns out that it’s been there since 1900, although the Melbourne store predates that by fifty years. This place is all about musicians. I love to go in and browse through the guitar section. There was this awesome Ibanez acoustic that I want so badly in there. It will be mine one day, but I’ve got a bit of saving to do first. There’s plenty of sheet music, tuners, effects pedals, amplifiers, organs, horns, you name it, it’s there. Such an awesome shop. You walk in and all you want to do from that point is play music. Love it.
