History

Established in 2004.

As farm kids growing up in the late 1950’s, the Giguiere brothers were veritable pyromaniacs, setting numerous things on fire – including the family wheat fields. Fearing total ruin of house and farm, the boys’ father one day left them at the city jail for an hour’s «stay» to impress upon them the dangers of their fascination with fire. Over time, the Giguiere boys outgrew their fascination with the flame. But even today they look at the Matchbook brand with fond memories of the fires they once stoked.

John, wife Lane and brother Karl started R.H. Phillips Winery in 1983 on land that was part of their family farm in the Dunnigan Hills of northwestern Yolo County. Starting as a small family owned vineyard and winery operation, the company grew into a 750,000 case producer sourced mostly from estate fruit from their 2,500 acre vineyard – a rarity for such a large producer.

They sold R.H. Phillips in 2000, and in 2005 left to start anew with their next endeavor: Matchbook Wine Company.
