The rangers/staff here are seriously organized and know their stuff. Be aware there are two lines: 1) same-day permits which are handed out at 8 a.m.; and 2) next-day permits which are handed out at 11 a.m. No need to get in line if you have reservations, of course. I was there July 3, 2015 at 7 a.m. and there were already about 6 people ahead of me for next-day permits so if it is a holiday weekend, summer weekend, or you are getting on a popular trail, bring your sleeping bag and chair so you can be comfortable in line for a few hours.
