Coyne Park Rifle and Pistol Range

I liked that it was a 15 minute bus ride from my home. From the Bedford Park subway stop along the 4, the Bee Line’s 20 bus drops off on Central Park Ave and McLean. From there, it’s only a short walk to Coyne Park.
The elderly gentlemen that were running the place when I went were nice enough. Since I don’t have a permit in New York, they provide a package that includes lane time, rental of a .22 rifle, 100 rounds of ammo, 2 targets, and eye/​ear protection. As of this post, $ 58 per person.
Note: When I’ve gone to ranges in Arizona, if I’m new to the place, I’m required to review safety rules and/​or watch a safety video. At Coyne Park, I was asked if I had experience shooting. I replied yes and was left to my own devices. Not sure what to make of that.
The range officer (?) showed me the operation of the rifle which was simple enough. Although I didn’t take note of it at the time, the rifle looked like and probably was a polymer Ruger ¹⁰⁄₂₂ with a 10 round magazine. It looked and felt like the equipment was well-​maintained as I experienced zero malfunctions.
The mechanism to place your targets at the desired distance was operated by hand wheel. There’s a certain charm to it, so no points off for that. The facility itself was clean and uncluttered.
I have to admit that I’ve been spoiled by the quality of facilities at the Scottsdale Gun Club, but I suppose that for a public range in New York, beggars can’t be choosers. Overall, it was a positive experience. I plan on bringing some family and friends here to introduce them to the shooting sports. I don’t want their only exposure to firearms to be be from television and movies. Coyne Park Rifle and Pistol Range seems like a decent enough place to give them a taste of what it’s all about.
Afterward, the nearby strip mall would be a nice place to grab some grub or coffee.

This was the very first place I went shooting and I can say thanks to them, I’m gladly still enjoying the sport 2 years later.
I went in as a nervous 18 year old with his first rifle in a guitar case. The guys running the range actually had a good laugh with me about it. I paid for my time, was given my targets and directed towards my station. Whenever I had any questions, they were friendly and more than willing to answer and help me out. One time I forgot my scope rail there and they held it for me until I arrived at the range again.
Reasonable price to pay for one of the only places to shoot in southern Westchester and great management. Saving up to be an annual member soon!

I am new to shooting and I find this range to be perfect. Simple procedures, easy and free parking, and very helpful and friendly people. No hassles with joining a gun club and and pay as you go; $ 20.00 per hour.
In one hour I shot 100 rounds. Perfect for practice and not really a big hang out. Get in, shoot and go. This place is so clean and well run that the safety officer kept sweeping up the spent shell as fast as I was dropping them.
I have to find out if I can clean my pistol there after I shoot. I don’t remember seeing any place for me to take down and clean.

First I should point out that the address given above, 735 McLean Ave., is the address you need to use to find the range on your GPS or on an online map like Google Maps. I wanted to mention this because the official address is 771 McLean Ave. However, it won’t be accurate if using a GPS or online map. In fact, the rifle range has a page on their website dedicated to explaining this because people have had problems finding the range in the past.
This range is owned by the city of Yonkers and is open to the public. The range fee is $ 20.00/hr. It’s a 50 ft indoor range that has 7 ports. Each port has a manual crank cable system for you to use for your targets. The range allows .22 caliber rifles, carbine rifles that use standard handgun ammunition, and handguns. There’s free parking in the parking lot.
The range has a filtration system that pumps air in from the outside and vents smoke from the range to the outside but it doesn’t have air conditioning. It was 99 degrees in the range area when I went on a hot day. So, take that into consideration.
I called the range a couple of times a few weeks before going and the people who I spoke to were friendly. In fact, Chris, one of the range officers that was there when I went on this hot day, suggested that I go inside the range area and see if it was going to be too hot for me before paying.
Because of budget constraints, some of the information on the website is outdated. For example, the site states that they sell ammunition, but when I went, they had a sign stating they weren’t selling ammunition. I don’t know if this is temporary or not. They also state that they rent .22 rifles but when I called a couple of months ago, they told me that all their rifles needed to be repaired. So just call the range and ask them any questions you may have before taking a ride there.
This is a good range to go to if you’re visiting the area or live nearby. I don’t have any other experience with public ranges so this may or may not be what you’re looking for. The important thing to me is that the people that run the range are friendly and they seem to be so at this range.
UPDATE
I went back a second time when it wasn’t as hot outside and the temperature was fine inside the range. I brought some paper zombie targets and had some fun shooting at them. People there were still friendly. I’ll go back on a regular basis when visiting friends in the area.
