Sugar Flake Bakery

Great local bakery — their crumb cake is delicious and in my opinion rivals that of the famous B&W in Hackensack. They have great gluten free desserts, which have been helpful for a couple of gluten intolerant relatives. Overall, a solid bakery.

I’ve yet to have something I didn’t like from here. The bakery is very clean, the staff is friendly, and the baked goods are great. We have had everything from the famous meltaway (if you haven’t had it get it now), their home made cinnamon raisin bread (great for French toast) and their cakes. We had snowflake make our cake for our gender reveal party; the cake was perfect and tasted fantastic. With my 20x there and never a complaint, I can’t give anything less then 5 stars at this time.

I’ve lived in Wyckoff going on 2 decades this July. I was always a fan of the now closed «Wyckoff Bakery», and was very excited when the Sugar Flake bakery (SFB) moved in where the old wine store used to be. I personally had never been to their other locations, though I had heard good things. Unfortunately after several chances I have to admit they’re nothing special. I really wanted to like them they were down the street, came highly recommended, and hired local hs kids. But the facts are the facts the cakes, pastries and breads are dry and bland one could almost call them stale even. The cookies were dry and tasteless. The majority of their items look amazing but that does not translate to taste.
That being said I did enjoy their «yum-​yums» but thats a whole other fiasco. The last time my wife and I went to SFB we were looking to try a few items, see what we liked and order somethings for the baby shower. The two girls working couldnt have been less helpful if I spoke Swahili. When asking what certian items in the display case were we received responses such as «umm…I dont know», «I think its a cake». When asked what type of cakes our question was met with blank stares. After what was an extreme exercise in patience my wife and I had a few things to take home to sample. As we were being rung up I inquired about the aforementioned «yum-​yums» wanting to buy a dozen to pick up the following day as they informed me they had none left. So after 15min of the both of them trying to work the cc machine we were able to leave box of goodies and an order for a dozen «yum-​yums» in hand. So that doesnt seem so bad unfortunately that wasn’t the end. Almost everything we bought was dry, bland and all together not good. The one exception was the brownie it was dry but it still tasted like a brownie atleast. The slices of cake my wife selected were not at all what she was led to believe they were supposed to be. That was the main theme of what we purchased. Each time was «ohh lets try this one «and than after one bite «uhh… what was that?!» What really helped cement my dislike of SFB was after we left I recieved a call the message was unprofessional and confusing. Long story short the order i had placed for 12 «yum-​yums» was not going to be filled. I never recieved a reason, only being told «we dont have enough» whatever that means. A Bakery with 3 or 4 locations cant fill an order for a dozen of something go figure. To add insult to injury I went there to get a refund because I had pre-​paid. They ended up double charging me and when everything was rectified I still had to wait a week for the money to actually be returned. I really wanted to like this place I didnt plan on writing a review let alone one so critical of a local business but after this fiasco I had to say something. Hopefully I save a few people from the colossal waste of time my wife and I delt with.

Very disappointing experience two years in a row at Thanksgiving. I tried to buy gluten free pies for Thanksgiving but you have to order at least three. I didn’t need three! I was told — no problem — if I could get there by 7:00am the day before Thanksgiving they would have several gluten free pies. I called several times to check in advance and they said they would have the pies in the morning. So I show up a little before 7:00 and there’s three guys in front of me and the pies weren’t there yet. Finally, the pie delivery guy arrives and unloads and guess what only two gluten free pies. Of course the first guy on line takes them both and doesn’t share — Happy Thanksgiving! (I have celiac and have to eat gluten free). The nice young girls working the counter think they’ll have more gluten free pies later but they’re not sure when, how many, can’t reserve one for me, etc. Basically, the store is managed horribly and no one is communicating with the folks working the counter to let them know what the real story is. In the window there is a sign that says they’re the Best Gluten free bakery in Bergen County — I’m not sure how that can be if they don’t have the goods. Anyway, my wife made me the best gluten free pecan pie ever, I will never go back to this store again! Needs new management!

Literally the worst customer service in the world. I harassed them to get my order taken. I usually go to sweet love and cake in Glen Rock which is so INCREDIBLE. The girls you deal with are intelligent, helpful and follow up. Our order was COMPLETELY wrong from sugar flake. Ordered chocolate cake for a baby shower and got a yellow cake with FROZEN cannoli cream on the inside (which they charged me more for) Asked for covered in sprinkles, came buttercream with sprinkles thrown on it. Never got a return phone call after the 10 times I called to talk to someone. Skip this place, shoprite is a better choice!

My dear wife went there this week to buy my birthday cake. Yes, she could have gone to the supermarket, but decided to go to a «real’ bakery as a special treat. The chocolate cake was as dry and unappetizing as a summer day in Death Valley. Ugh, a business does itself no favor selling product that is clearly «off». We will naturally tell everyone we know about this experience. You can have all the accolades on your front window you want, but it’s all about the actual items for sale.

Went in to order a cake for my daughter’s birthday. The girl behind the counter was ready to help. As soon as I let them know I wanted a more decorative cake she said she couldn’t help me. I would have to call the baker and speak to them at their different location. I really wanted to be helped right there. They have a huge display of cakes but no one can help you.

The store layout is cute. I can’t say if their cakes taste good or not because the person «helping» me at the counter was so horrible, I had to scrap my order and walk out. I wanted to order a cake, and since I’m not a baker or a particularly creative person, I was hoping they could help me with the options and tell me what they could do. After all, the cakes on their website all look so artistic and creative. The young girl at the counter was obviously frustrated because I didn’t walk in with the exact specifications, but instead told her in general what I wanted and asked for her opinion. She rudely said I should have come in with a picture. I thought they were the experts and would be able to help me order a pretty cake. The person in line next to me whispered that another bakery down the road would be «better equipped» to help us. We left and went to the other bakery and ordered our cake without a problem in just a few minutes. Their baker helped make suggestions and I ordered a $ 100 cake. I won’t waste my time at Sugarflake again.

This used to be a remarkably good bakery, really up to European standards. The black and white cookies were cakelike, and had a hint of lemon flavoring in the dough. The icings were true boiled icings, everything was fresh, and the baguettes were particularly savory. The only fault was the typical American one of sometimes adding too much: they’d make a wonderful cookie with nuts and a glaze, and then put chocolate on it too. But that was the exception.
Then within the last month it all went dramatically downhill. Stale cookies, cheap cream instead of real custard in the eclairs, buttercream frosting in place of icing. Last week I bought a pastry with a hair baked into it. Enough.

I love the bakery and go to all three all the time especially FL location. But 50% of the time they never have what I want and in FL the Price changes every time they do! So today I called Wyckoff to see if they had my product and the woman said we sure do! So I made the trip up and guess what NOTHING the young lady said they had nothing.
I have gone to all 3 locations for 10 years, NO MORE I am sorry the specific products that we purchase are great and the people are very nice but the service and availability stinks!
Will no longer go back I have had my last disappointment!

Excellent sweets. We have ordered a cake for my daughter’s birthday and were not disappointed. Very friendly service. Love this place!

I had called up to ask if they made or would make a linzer torte — the answer I got was a without a doubt yes. I asked if they could make one that was about 10″ — the girl put me on hold for a few minutes to ask her boss and we got another yes. Was told it would cost $ 40 so we placed the order to be picked up in a couple of days. Prior to getting off phone I again confirmed that I was ordering a linzer torte. We show up to pick it up asking for the linzer torte that was ordered and were immediately told that they don’t make them. Had we been told this from the beginning we would have not ordered anything. Instead, what was made and put in our box was a linzer cookie. Being that we had ordered this for a birthday, we took it. The birthday girl is a pastry chef in Manhattan who specifically asked for this for her birthday, and unfortunately she doesn’t like linzer cookies. Very disappointed that we did not get what we ordered — especially since multiple times on the phone I had double checked w the girl that I was ordering a linzer torte.

They ruined my expensive cake order on two separate occasions. And the second time I called multiple times to make sure they get it right. Unacceptable. I will not order cakes from them again.

I went in on a Friday at 6:30pm and the 2 girls in there could care less that I was there, they were less than helpful and continues to yawn while I asked questions. I needed a last minute birthday cake and they had no piping to write anything on the cake and no decorations. Who runs out of stuff to decorate a cake when that is your business. I finally settled for a plain cheesecake (albeit no decorations), which turned out to be good. The staff though was sub par and wouldn’t recommend this place.

I came here for the Gluten-​Free stuff. I loved the Brownie…

I love the idea of local shops, boutiques, and bakeries so I couldn’t wait to try Sugarflake in Wyckoff. I thought their product was good, but certainly not great. Their breads really leave something to be desired. The pastries are incredibly (like overboard) sweet. One thing I will say is we sampled some of the cheesecake, and it was delicious! I would definitely get a cheesecake there, and would feel great about supporting a local business. We are going to give the gelato/​ice cream a try this summer too.

I enjoyed their sweets, not the best I’ve ever had but quite good. Their donuts were delectable as well. Would have liked to try their breads too, will have to go back for that. No idea why the Dunkin Donuts across the street is so much more crowded than this place. If I drank coffee, I’d def go here rather then there.

Enjoy the quietest Sugarflake location while it lasts. I will always go to this location since it is never super busy. The are open for Thanksgiving and stocked with all different pies and cakes of the highest quality. Pricing is a more than you would pay at a cheap supermarket bakery but clearly the quality is worth the premium and then some. This is the go to place for quality bakery items. The girls that work the counter are always friendly, patient and helpful. I brought a piece of paper with a foreign language for a visiting family member and they put the message on my cake for a wonderful birthday surprise.

4 stars for cakes and cookies, 2 stars for breads. If I could give 3.5 STARS I would have, but Unilocal did not let me. I hope the breads and rolls improve. Their cakes and pastries live up to the reputation they carried over from the other shops.
I gave 4 stars because I want them to succeed. They are good people, friendly to their communities, and they try hard. I am sure they will improve the breads. I wish them success here.

The products are fresh and the staff is very helpful (as an aside, almost every staff member is fit and trim, as if no one pilfers or samples any of the desserts they serve up). I do tend to find some of their goods weighted a bit heavy on the sweet side, but others may think the amount of sugar they use is
Anyway, I digress. The cakes are original and the chocolate horns (have tried almond and raspberry as well) are probably the best I’ve ever tasted; anywhere.
The cookies are fairly basic (I’ve been there three times, so may not have enough of a sample here) but taste good — especially with a cup of coffee.
Speaking of the coffee, this is an opportunity for patrons to try arabica gourmet coffee. I actually can’t stand it, but I believe this is a personal opinion and not a reflection of what they serve. If you also don’t like the green mountain variety, you may want to bring your own.
Personalized cakes: creative, colorful, and each one is unique. This may not be «Ace of Cakes,» but locally, I believe this is one of our best options. Their facebook page shows some of their handy work under the «photos» tab.
Lastly, I’m still confused as to where their parking is. One lot, immediately next to the building doesn’t have any designated Sugarflake spots. Perhaps this can be addressed — especially since the lot goes out of its way to suggest owner’s expense towing and who IS allowed to park there. I think the actual parking is on the street or shared with «The Write Occasion’s» parking lot on weekends.
