Every two years, my family gets together in Woodsfield to have a reunion with family & friends. We have done this for as long as I can remember, sometimes staying at Shadow Lake and sometimes trying other things like the motel or B&B in town. Usually we use Shadow Lake because of the convenience of being able to stay somewhere and have a party hall to throw the party at. Shadow Lake has changed owners many times in the past 10 years. I feel like every time we go there is a different owner. This year, it was me & my cousin’s turn to plan everything. We had the party hall already reserved from 2 years ago and had already put money down. The new owners did not have any documentation of this but did take our word for it, which was very nice of them. Unfortunately, this is where the convenience stopped. We were informed that teams of frackers were staying at Shadow Lake as well as everywhere else in Woodsfield so they might not have room for us to stay in the cabins/stone house we usually stay at. We needed somewhere to stay for a week and no one knew if the frackers would still be in town at that point or not. So basically whether this reunion would happen was touch and go for a long time. Finally, about a couple of months beforehand they let my uncle know that the time we needed was available. Hallelujah. Things have changed like they do with new owners. They changed the way you drive in with a blocked entryway that you needed to stop in the office to get the passcode for. This was both good and bad– good that you know not anyone can drive onto the campground but bad in that everyone had a different passcode and no one was allowed to share those passcodes, even with other people staying on the premises. My family was scared for the lives to talk about the passcodes! Haha. But really, it was borderline ridiculous. Also, when we did have the party that Saturday we had to have my cousin’s poor bf man the passcode in the heat of the day so people could drive in to the party hall! In my opinion if I have paid you money to use the hall then you should have someone out there on your payroll helping us bring our guests in. Other random things were inconvenient– not enough towels, garbage bags, etc. Speed limit is 5 mph and if you go 1 mph more than that they yell at you. We are looking elsewhere at the moment for next time but might end up here again. Here’s to hoping they kick up the hospitality.
