The Club at Woodbridge

This place is AWFUL. It has not been updated since what seems the early 80’s. I can not believe this lot is always full. It’s a little bit of a hike but check out any of the RWJ Fitness Centers. I now go to the one in Carteret, which is brand new and yes it is pricey but I felt so gross walking into the club, that I guess you just get what you pay for. Also I thought about signing my son up for their intro to preschool and I have never had a worse experience with a front staff. They acted as if I should be bowing down that my son was going to get a spot. Ridiculous. Thank goodness the contract said that I had 3 days to cancel, I went in the next day and relinquished my oh so coveted spot. They gave me an attitude and told me that I couldn’t cancel, I showed them their contract and they said they’d have to check with the finance department. What a joke. I got my money back. This was just the last straw. Such a prime piece of real estate, they need to tear this all down and start new… staff and all. FYI the pool is gross.

This is a hard place to accurately rate. The only reason I joined is because of their group exercise schedule. I rarely utilize a gyms weights and cardio machines. So I can’t speak of their quality or availability.
The group exercises classes are awesome. Great variety. Varied times. So far all the instructors have been top notch. It’d be nice if there was one later class on Friday (last class is at 5) and a class at or after noon on the weekend (last class is 11). I’m sure over the years they’ve played with the schedule and found those class times to be empty or maybe they have a hard time finding instructors for those times.
They have a large area for babysitting and kid classes. There are a lot of kids here at times but they are pretty much in a certain areas and they’ve never been a bother.
This place is outdated. It’s not set up like a gym– it’s a compound. I understand remodeling the whole place would be a very long and expensive process, but just about every area is overdue for a revamping. I don’t find the facilities to be dirty, it’s just so outdated and the layout is crowded/​mismatched that it gives the impression of being dirty. Sorta like your grandmom’s home where everything in the house is from 1960 and she keeps it clean, but you can only make stuff from 1960 look so good. It’s the same idea with this place but it’s stuck in 1980. Id really like to see the ladies locker room totally redone; that’s the worst part of the gym in my opinion.
The gym is pricey but they offer a lot here so they can justify the hefty monthly dues. Just would like to see lots of updating for the price that is paid since I used to be a member at another facility with most of the same amenities, at a similar price, but it was state of the art.

The customer service is worst here. I am a paid 3 year member and usually go to the branch at South plainfield. Today i went to Woodbridge club along with my friend and they made me wait 25 minutes without letting me in. The front desk lady Diane called someone in their membership office who showed up after long wait and then started attending a new prospective customer who came much after me. This shows that they do not care about existing members. I drove 25 minutes to play racquet ball which went in vain. There are lot of better facilities available elsewhere with or without contract. New members, please do not get trapped into their false talks. You can see the negative reviews about this place and i agree with them.

I’ve been to gyms around the world and this one is easily in my top 5 worst gyms on that list. Outdated equipment, clueless staff, and unsanitary locker rooms that always smell awful. Its only redeeming factor is the basketball courts

I have used this club as a gym before for many many years. The club itself was good, so this made me doubly disappointed that the main management would partner with shady guys for the kidsports section. I don’t know whether the same owners or different, but it is certainly sad that an other wise good club has shady greedy people running kidsports. I wouldn’t ask anyone to take the extreme stance of staying away, but I would urge caution. Don’t trust them with your money. Pay them as little as possible in advance.
I think the person who identified himself as one of the owners is Ray. Jeff Z, if you are reading this, take note!

I found the kidsports management unethical. We paid a $ 2000 advance payement upfront for a 10-​week summer camp. Within 4 weeks, they decided without any consultation that they no longer want to have our 6 year old son continue in the camp. As shocking as t his was, on top of that they had the audacity to tell us, normally we don’t refund anything. I am like, sir, we are not asking you to take our kid out. You are refusing to provide the service. He says, OK, I’ll meet you half way and refund half of the remaining balance. I don’t know about you, I think only a person with low morals, ethics and cheating attitude can say this. I have no fear in publicly claiming that this management lies. Instead of sending back around $ 1200, they sent me less than half back. Think about it. If they can cheat me for cash, how would they be treating the kids down there. I regret sending my kid to this lying a** dog. I am taking them to court and going to sue for the balance refund and punitive damages. His decision to abruptly kick our child out without notice caused us work issues, and obviously our child was very upset and crying for 3 days straight (Why can’t I go back to the camp?). You might laugh when you hear this, but it’s not funny when your own kid goes through this.

This is a great gym, I can’t really compare it to other gyms because this is the only gym I have been to. For the fee of $ 50 per month, you have access to a lot of amenities. My personal favorite are the towels, sauna and steam room. The hours are not the best but I make it work…

I first joined this gym a little over a year ago. It’s expensive because it does have a lot of amenities that most gyms around here do not have. I recently cancelled because the gym equipment is just SO outdated, plus I prefer to workout outside anyway. I would sit on machines and they would just break. The best part of this gym is that is very quiet at the right times, and it has a family friendly atmosphere so you don’t feel like your working out amongst meat heads and convicts. There’s mostly elderly folk. Lol. The yoga instructors are the best :) special thank you to them.

The gym is nice. And it is very «club» like. But the membership is on the steep side. And from what I hear with the other members, it really varies from member to member.
But you pay $ 10 at planet fitness or wherever and your waiting for a machine forever. Too many distractions and other gyms are more a hang out.
A lot of the members are regulars and faces get familiar. They have a tennis court, basketball court, raquet ball court, and a lot of private studios (one dedicated to cycling). They offer a lot of different classes to.

If I was just rating the equipment, it would give this place 2 – 3 stars, very old and outdated, this place kinda seems like its in a time warp from the 80’s or something—
I have been to several gyms around Woodbridge, and I like this one the best simply due to their customer service.
I really like the staff, everyone was very pleasant, and this club REALLY has everything you need, something to eat/​drink after you workout, and it has a tons of activites for kids, which is a plus. Looking forward to working out there again.

The gym is out dated. They really need to spend some money to change the carpet, improve ventilation and make it more lively. The place is dull and stinky during prime time.
The fitnesses classes are best ever. Trish is absolutely phenomenal. She is driven and can make you reach your goal. Other fitness trainers are awesome as well.
I have been going to this gym for about 3 years now. The trainers keep me there. I am disgusted with the smell and untidy feeling when you enter this gym.

So, the equipment is a little old, membership is a little steep, but they have a great program with 6 free appointments with a personal trainer. Rachel was really good. They have tons of classes all day and night, there is plenty of equipment to use, so you rarely have to wait for a machine, and they seem to keep it pretty clean. I like it, and I’ve somehow managed to keep coming back. The fact that they don’t make you sign a year long commitment or any of that jazz was the selling point for me.

I had to update to say, Pat in accounting is probably the most awful person I’ve ever spoken to in my entire existence. It is because of her I would no longer recommend this gym. However, if you don’t have to deal with a condescending person like her, I would resort back to my original saying of it is an okay gym for the price.

The sauna in the women’s locker room is GREAT!
Although EXTREMELY dated, the women’s locker room is big and has plenty of lockers.
There is a track, it’s not big enough to do sprints on, but it is sufficient for walks or light jogging. If you’re looking to do sprints head to Rahway River Park.
The TRX class is AMAZING.
The Chisel class with Cindy is AWESOMENESS.
They have an awesome PK Deli which makes great protein shakes and even serves breakfast.
Overall great free weights section, definitely the best part of the gym.
Cons:
Parents! There are tons of parents here who drop off their child and then fill up the seats and watch you while you work out. It is utterly unnerving.
The hot tun in the women’s locker room, I wouldn’t use it or the showers if someone paid me. Hair everywhere.
They need LATER (like 9pm) classes. And honestly their boot camp class is the PITS. I took one day of it and regretted paying the $ 50 dollars. DO NOT take their boot camp class. It literally is run, jumping jacks, scissor kicks, pushups & repeat. It was horrible and nothing like a real boot camp class. Save your money.
Some of their personal trainers need to be personally trained themselves. It’s time they let go of some of these «trainers» and hire people that actually look like they are physically fit. Or at least hire people who don’t sit around talking to each other all day. Maybe I’d be more apt to purchase personal training if your trainers were actually DOING something. Even when I see them training other people they are NOT motivational whatsoever.
The hours! Can we talk about how every Holiday this gym decides that they should get a 3 day weekend? Not only do they close at noon or 1pm on the Holidays (that everyone has off and WANTS to be in the gym) but they then close at 1pm the REST of the week. It’s ridiculous.
The tanning bed: DO NOT USE IT! Heed my warning fellow tanners. I made this mistake and will never make it again. It is FILTHY and crawling with bacteria. Immediately after cleaning it and using it I had white spots everywhere, doctor said it was from tanning bed, immediately after stopping use for a week, they disappeared. Thank Goodness! Not only is the tanning bed filthy but it is also EXTREMELY old. It will take you WEEKS to get a hint of a tan if you have never tanned before. do yourself a favor and just go to regular tanning salon.
If they are going to offer in this in their package to us members, they need to purchase a new stand up tanning machine. TRUE STORY!
The ladies at the front desk: EXTREMELY rude. The younger ladies are so pleasant and helpful, the older ladies? I don’t think I’ve met a ruder woman than one of them, but I will say no names since I still belong here.
Bottom line: Is it a gym to join? Sure thing, prices aren’t too bad but don’t buy the hype on free tanning or usage of the pool, the pool is hardly ever open to us folks who just want to free swim nor do they have late classes for those of us who work in the city and get off late.
BUT, the actual gym, free weights, machines etc are nice. The women’s workout room is a joke but the actual part of the gym that everyone can use is A-​OK. Minus a few machines that don’t work or the basketball courts constantly being used for things OTHER than basketball by us paying patrons.
The only other thing I don’t like is that they have these parties, where they invite everyone in the club, however they bring pizza, beer… isn’t this a FITNESS gym? What happened to the FIT part?

As far as gyms go, I’d say The Club has something for everyone:
Free weights, a track, a pool, racquetball courts, basketball courts, a weight circuit, treadmills, a daycare center, an on site masseuse, a massage water bed, a snack bar where you can get much more than snacks– there were times when I had an entire dinner there and on and on.
And last but not least, there are group exercise classes which are phenomenal for one reason– Trish, the group fitness director. She has a passion for fitness which is undeniable. She’s the kind of instructor who pushes you to work out to your absolute limit, which you want because that’s why you’re there! Her classes are challenging but fun. Just when you think you can’t possibly do another jumping jack or lift another weight, she’ll tell a story about something completely unrelated to working out and suddenly you are so distracted that you don’t even realize you just pushed through something you thought you couldn’t survive.
What I find most motivational about her is that she is real. She overate on Thanksgiving just like you did– and now you are ALL busting your butts to make up for it. When you are struggling with something, she is up there struggling along with you. And every other instructor of group fitness there is just as great as she is so any class you walk into is guaranteed to be worth your time and effort in calories burned.
I highly recommend The Club if you’re serious about working out– it’s worth every penny of your membership dues!
