Lorenzo’s Market

I rarely do this, and I usually try to shop at locally owned stores, but it is obvious that the management is just phoning it in. They clearly don’t care about putting any effort in. Wilted vegetables, high prices, staff who don’t care. No. I really want to support local businesses, but this place makes me proud to shop at a chain. Fail.

It was Sunday and our kids were going cray-​cray from being indoors so we decided to drive over to Lake Solano near Winters and hang out and picnic. Our choices along the way to pick up some grub were Nugget and this market. We decided to check out the Country Market.
It seems to be a good local grocery option for the kinds of groceries that people need for their day-​to-​day lives, but the deli was a disappointment. First, we eyeballed the big menu board and began ordering: tri-​tip sandwich, chicken tenders … and we were stopped by the deli worker and told unfortunately they didn’t have those items anymore – as in the menu should be changed. Okay, what the hey. How about some fried chicken … yeaaaaaaah they ran out of that. Okay, how about some mac-​n-​cheese? Nope. Out of that too. Etc. Etc.
We ended up ordering a couple of sandwiches, which for a picnic is fine, but not when you were hoping for fauncier picnic fare. Bottom line: we shoulda stopped at Nugget where they have the day-​to-​day sutff AND an awesome deli section.

This store has almost all its prices set to exactly twice the price of the prices at Walmart. Whoever their supplier is must be ripping them off since they can actually buy their goods at Walmart and have them cheaper to sell than what they currently do. I knew another independent grocery store that did just that. What’s strange is across the street is a new Dollar General with normal prices and yet this store still has lots of shoppers.
Other than the prices, it seems like a nice grocery store.

I went to the deli their were three workers talking to each other I had to get there attention about 2 minutes just to find out they did not have what I wanted. Then I took my soda’s to the register on of the soda’s rang up wrong price I told them there is a sign for a different price they said it was for a different soda I pointed out the sign was in front of the product I was trying to buy and she said the put up the sign in front of that soda as well so people know the other soda was on sale. They always have things ring up wrong and bad sign placement prices are outrageous I try not to go there at all I will make shure to get everything I need out of town or at the new dollar general

Quietly tucked behind a gas station on the way to downtown Winters, Lorenzo’s may not be easy to find, but it’s worth the quest.
Hungry after a drive out from the East Bay, all we wanted was a sandwich. A simple, satisfying sandwich, at a decent price made with real ingredients. We walked to a bakery. Closed. We walked to another bakery. Overpriced. We drove to Dollar General. Why did we do that. We checked out Subway. $ 7 for a chicken sub?!
You get the idea.
Grasping at the remaining shreds of our sanity, we found Lorenzo’s (and it wasn’t even on Unilocal!). I’ll admit my review is biased because by this point it felt like I’d walked into a utopian wonderland of organic produce, cheeses, and *meat*. So much meat.
Deli sandwiches are hand-​made by lovely ladies behind the counter, and are only $ 4.99 each for fresh, *real* food (I’m looking at you, strange-​smelling Subway buns). The folks that are shopping in the store bring small-​town charm and will strike up a conversation, happy to give recommendations on what to buy. Certain items are a fantastic deal, like the strawberries on my visit, and they have obscure meats like duck or rabbit.
Needless to say, Lorenzo’s literally saved the day. God knows how many more places I would have gone, desperately searching for a sandwich oasis. Next time, I’m coming straight here. Enough said.

I won a gift certificate of $ 100.00 for this store at a fundraiser. Small market that packs a punch-​I actually really liked this store. You can tell that the sales there aren’t too high and that more locals may use it as a convenience store rather than their main grocery store.
That being said, they have everything you could possibly need. And some great gourmet items too. For example they had Willie Bird’s turkey bacon and I can’t even find that at home in Sonoma County unless I go to the Willie Birds on Hwy 12 to get it. They cut a pork butt for my husband because they didn’t have any out in the meat counter.
Over all I loved this little market and would go back.

I agree with several other reviews. When you go to buy ice cream most of the time I can squeeze the container; meaning not frozen!
Every time we visit the market we check for the expiration date and half the time we can’t buy what we need due to the quality of fruit/​veggies or use by date has passed. Dents in cans and over priced as well! I am sure it is difficult to make a profit in a small town but I can bet it could be done and have standards!

I’ve held back as long as I can from writing this review, but after opening a box of melted and re-​frozen ice cream drumsticks, I’m done keeping silent about this store.
This is a favorite go to when I realize, halfway into cooking dinner, I need a red onion STAT! My husband has repeatedly come home with rotten red onions, produce that has already turned, and even expired boxes of food from this store.
I get it, he should know what he’s looking for and buying. But the store shouldn’t have such a plethora of turned food for him to select from either.
Another time we were in there and they announced that their system went down and they were only accepting cash. How about checks? Local checks from people who live right down the road? Well THAT system was down too. Please explain how taking a check from me is a system and it was down? Oh, sure, you have a system that can process the check electronically, but you could also just take the check from me and deal with it later, since, well, your system is down.
I feel no loyalty to a store that regularly displays rotten fruit and veggies in cute baskets, sells melted and re-​frozen ice cream, expired packaged food, and will not work with customers when their credit card system goes down.
Two stars instead of one because their employees have consistently been nice, the appearance is clean, and it is much more convenient than Vacaville.

I am a fan of this market. They have a great deli with hand made sandwiches and yummy fried chicken and salads, a butcher counter with great cuts of meat, fresh produce, a specialty section with great cheese varieties and warm freshly baked bread. I can always get a good bottle of wine here to go with dinner. The store is cleverly decorated and the employees are always friendly and helpful.

Absolutely the best! We have lived in Winters over seven years and enjoy shopping at the Town & Country Market. The owners are very pleasant & caring as well as all of the employees. Definitely a home-​town atmosphere with plenty of food items to choose from… even a deli. When passing through Winters on your way to & from Lake Berryessa, you may want to stop by to purchase what you need. They even have a gas station. I give them a «high five» rating!

It’s sad to see this place struggle, because growing up it was a great small town supermarket. If they could get a focus on what it is they are actually best at delivering, they might not have the rep of being so overpriced for such dismal quality. It actually isn’t a bad store, it’s just that people have better, cheaper options 15 minutes away, not to mention a ton of awesome local fruit stands.

High prices and wilted vegetables dominate this mini-​monopoly located in the small town of Winters. The Lorenzo’s have prevented any competition from entering this little town board and as they sit on the town board own the only market in town or so I’ve heard. This is what we are stuck with and this why I continue to drive to Vacaville or Davis to buy groceries instead of putting a dime back into this place.
At the least replace the veggies when they get too old to sell. I tried to buy green beans the other day and was presented with a bowl of dilapidated beans that I tried to dig to find something that wouldn’t poison me. I tried to get dill today. $ 2.59 for a tiny pack of dill that was obviously going bad. But hey if you want chorizo or fried pork rinds you are in luck. They have gotten complacent as there is no competition.
