Purple Shutter Herbs was conceived as a comprehensive herbal center, a place where people can gather to delight in the beauty, wisdom & practice of herbs.

Purple Shutter Herbs was opened in 1995 to provide the highest quality herbs & related herbal products available with emphasis on our herbal apothecary. Focusing on our responsibility for the care taking of the plant world, we work directly with herb growers & producers. Our herbs are mostly organically grown or ethically wild crafted. Our herbal products are handmade, here at the store, with only the best ingredients. We always try to use local ingredients first. We are able to custom blend herbal remedies for your wellness needs.

The shop is warm and welcoming, staffed by knowledgeable folks & as much a destination for the casual browser, as it is for the dedicated herbalist. And when you find yourself in Winooski join us for a cup of tea — we have one waiting just for you!

Do you know why my shop is called Purple Shutter Herbs?

Let me tell you the story —

When I was around 10 my Mom decided that the outside of the house needed painting. She told me that it would be white but asked what color I thought the shutters should be. I kinda looked at her oddly & asked if she had met me before?! She knew what my answer was going to be — PURPLE, of course. But I said it anyway. She said «NO»! Surprised, I then asked her why she even brought up the question since she was only going to shoot me down? It was just the two of us, so basically she wasn’t going to accept my suggestion. I was furious mostly because when I asked her why not, she just said no. I pointed out that this was unfair & I wanted a reason. She said she didn’t want purple shutters & if I had another suggestion she would consider it. I said LILAC & stormed out of the room. She unilaterally decided on bright canary yellow (kinda like the color of the walls in the shop) for the shutters.
