After graduating from law school, Steve began his legal career as an associate attorney in the law office of legendary Vermont trial lawyer and statesman, Thomas W. Costello. Within two years of joining that office he was named a partner in the firm and headed the firm’s entire criminal defense division. While a partner at Costello Wright, Steve secured not guilty verdicts and dismissals in cases including DWI, drug possession and trafficking, child pornography, assaults, burglary, robbery and sex crimes.

His reputation as an aggressive and effective trial lawyer led him to join Ryan, Smith, & Carbine, one of the State’s oldest and largest law firms. Steve joined their litigation division where he represented some of the nation’s largest insurance companies and corporations in matters including multi-​million dollar construction litigation and wrongful death matters.
