History

Established in 1985.

North Carolina native Merrimon Kennedy has owned and operated New Elements Gallery since 1988. The gallery began in a space on South Front Street in downtown Wilmington and was moved to North Front Street in 1987 by founders Tom and Lisabeth Calenberg. Kennedy purchased the business the following year and remained in the North Front Street location for 25 years. In early 2012 she moved the gallery less than two blocks away to its current home, 201 Princess Street at the corner of 2nd and Princess Street. The building is an historic landmark, originally serving as the city’s jail in 1785. Many different businesses have occupied the space over the years, including a savings and loan in the 1980’s. The bank vault remains and serves as the gallery’s storage area for artwork.
