The Birches at Steep Acres Farm

The Birches is an incredible place to stay if you’re visiting the area. It is absolutely gorgeous, with beautiful land, hills, and a lovely pond. Dan is accommodating and flexible, and gives great recommendations about places to go. He was able to accommodate us on quite short notice, and was always responsive. His two dogs are so friendly and sweet, they will walk you to the pond all on their own and love to play with you! They were a delight to have around. We stayed in the king suite, which has it’s own private bathroom and private deck! The other rooms share a bathroom– similarly to other B&B’s, which didn’t seem to be a problem for the other guests, but is good to know when booking a room if you are schedule-conscious.The deck off of the king suite has a great view of the woods and land– we got to see deer, and fireflies, and watch the fire in the outdoor pit. There is also an outdoor kitchen which looks spectacular. The room also has a Jacuzzi, but we didn’t get to use it because of a water issue, but we will next time. Dan cooks breakfast in the morning, making different dishes each morning which were all delicious. He was able to accommodate our dietary needs without a problem. The Inn and rooms were always clean and are beautifully decorated. Staying there was such a dream, we did not want to leave! If you are looking to get away or just looking for a place to stay while in the area, I couldn’t recommend this place enough. I’m already thinking of when I can go back!

My only reluctance with writing this review is that once everybody finds out about Steep Acres Farm there’s never going to be a vacancy!
I spent the weekend here with my father, brother, and wife. After driving up to the house and having the dogs (the most incredible canine companions I’ve ever had the joy of meeting) greet us as we got out, we took a look over the grounds and decided right then and there that we wouldn’t leave the property all weekend.
We didn’t (aside from going out for dinners). We were having too much fun rowing boats out on the pond, playing volleyball, running with the dogs, relaxing on the porch, and eating Dan’s AMAZING breakfasts. It was truly the ideal countryside getaway, and we’d all love to get back there soon.
The house is also immaculate, cozy, handcrafted, as well as the rooms. The whole experience can’t be recommended highly enough.

Hi — stayed here recently — while finding the place was a little tricky up a long winding road, once I found it I was very pleased — the location is superb and the setting beautiful and serene — the host Dan was knowledgable about the area and helpful — his breakfasts were delicious (not the usual cold cereal and stale muffins) all homemade and warm… I found this place quite by accident but it was a great fit — very clean and well kept and he had two lovely (and quiet) dogs who were delightful and loved to walk the property with me — this place is a gem — I would definitely return and I am fussy…

What a treasure. Breakfast is out of this world. Really an amazing place and a hidden delight. Highest recommendation!

Finally had to create a Unilocal account just to leave a positive review for The Birches. My boyfriend and I stayed for two nights on our trip to Mount Greylock and had a great experience. Dan was very accommodating – Didn’t mind taking us on short notice and called me back quickly when I left a voicemail asking a question. He was also a great resource for insight about the mountain, the town, and things to do in the area. Our room (the Queen) was comfortable and immaculately clean, and very fairly priced. The land is absolutely gorgeous; I wish we’d had the time to explore it (and could see that filling an afternoon itself). Dan’s dogs are sweet and well-​trained, and his breakfasts are AMAZING, so don’t miss those.

What a wonderful place to stay! Not only is the B&B lovely with wonderful views and beautiful grounds to walk (and two charming dogs for company on those walks) but Dan is extremely friendly and helpful, with lots of great information about the sights and local attractions. Also, he is quite the cook — the breakfasts were amazing and deserve five stars all on their own. If you are looking for a peaceful getaway that is near to MA, NY and VT attractions then look no more.

A lovely B&B on a beautiful, secluded spot. Delicious breakfasts, comfortable rooms, gorgeous grounds, and so many nice touches, from the dogs to the chickens (fresh eggs!) to the pond (swimming, boating) to the flowers to the hooty owl, deer, and star-​lit expanse. All that within minutes of the Clark, Mass MoCA, and great theater and restaurants. And the price is very right.

If you are considering a weekend in North Adams or Williamstown, or really anywhere in the vicinity, I cannot recommend The Birches highly enough. Three rooms are available inside a private home: a King suite, a Queen room, and one with two Twins. For the prices alone, though there are a litany of reasons, this is an amazing deal: $ 175 for the King suite and $ 100 for either of the other two rooms. We chose the Queen and found the room to be comfortable, spotless, and more than enough space. The Queen and the Twin room share a bathroom, though odds are if you’re booking the Queen you’ll have the bathroom to yourself as I can’t imagine two adults that’d stay here and want to be in one room in two twin beds. As it was, we had the entire place to ourselves and it felt as though we had moved to our dream country home.
Every morning at 8am breakfast is provided by Dan, the owner. Breakfast changed everyday, and every meal was more delicious than the last: baked pears, fresh fruit with yogurt and granola, baked eggs in crème and garlic… everything was heavenly! A large pot of coffee and juice are also made available.
An early breakfast gives you a good excuse to get an early start on your day, and you’ll want to because there is just so much to do, or not do. Hazel and Emma (the resident Labradors) will be waiting for you on the porch should you decide to venture around the 50 acres of rolling hills, forest, and fields. Hazel prefers to play ball above all else, while Emma has the endurance of a Greyhound and will swim with you for hours or guide you through the hiking trails. As you explore you may also encounter the rest of Dan’s family, his employees, and the other resident dogs, all of which are truly warm and amazing people/​animals. If you visit in the summer, I highly recommend taking a swim in the pond/​lake on the property. Dan has created a tiny «beach» area with sand, and there’s even a diving board as well as a canoe and row boat available. I also have to suggest you curl up in one of the lounge chairs overlooking the apple trees at night, there is no more beautiful sky than you will see there.
The Birches is also in the ideal place to explore. You can easily get to any attractions in Williamstown or North Adams, including Mass MOCA, and there are plenty of delicious options for lunch and dinner (I’d recommend Public for dinner and Coyote Flaco for margaritas!).

Absolutely gorgeous bed and breakfast. My husband and I stayed here on our honeymoon while we were attending a music festival.
Breakfast is hot, delicious, and filling. The first day was grilled pineapple, blueberry pancakes with real maple syrup, and sausage. The next day was baked pears with yogurt and granola, scrambled eggs, sausage, and a croissant. It was fabulous.
We stayed in the King room for $ 175 a night — we had a private balcony, a jacuzzi, and our own bathroom. The only two complaints I have are that there were no curtains or shades on the windows, so it wasn’t easy to sleep in past 7am, and the jacuzzzi took at least 20 minutes to fill up. The water just didn’t flow fast enough. However, the shower worked perfectly.
Dan, the owner, has two lovely well behaved dogs, and a lovely chunk of land that is 57 acres. Make sure you go to the hand-​made pond — it’s absolutely amazing. There are boats, lounge chairs, and a hand made sandy beach!
