Bummer. I liked the food my first visit – though a bit pricey. Recently I ordered the same dish but now it has been simplified so much that I could have made it myself for nearly nothing. The food was bland and had no presentation qualities. Then the bill was way too much for what is being served. I’m thankful now that COA is at Bayshore. This place needs to pick a new ethnicity. The other negative reviews were spot on.

Empanadas yummy, tacos yummy… You can also text a coupon code while you are in the restaurant and get a free drink coupon texted to your phone and you can use it right away. Service is okay seems to take them a long time to get to your table 2/3x I was there. If you are a moijito fan beware of ordering them here… They tried to make be one twice and it failed to taste like a moijito

They have cheap specials, but you get what you pay for! Why does everything taste like BBQ sauce?

Great location-BAD food. Play it safe here and stick with bottled beer here, at least you’ll know you’ll be able to ingest it!

Absolutely disappointed! Where do I start? Strike one: My wife tried to order tortilla soup–«Sorry, we’re currently out.» Strike two: Taco bar had dirty plates. The waitress needed to replace all of them. Strike three: Wine and beer cooler was off, thus no cold beer and wine. Was offered a frosted glass to cool down the warm wine. Oh, and a glass of wine is $ 6. Are you kidding me? Strike four: Rice was undercooked and down-right disgusting. Chicken in the taco bar lacked complete taste. Strike five: Used a «Groupon» and was required to tip 19%. This was never mentioned on the groupon website. Courtney Garish(sp?) of TMJ4 needs to visit for a «Dirty Dining» episode. Don’t waste your time or money!

I was told by a friend that they enjoyed this place, so I gave it a shot today. Upon walking in, I noticed that there were only 2 other occupied tables, with one table separating them. I had a funny feeling that our host would seat me there, and I was correct. Strike one. Why would I want to sit in between 2 sets of strangers? I had decided that a burrito was what I wanted, and noticed they had 2 options. 1 was one large«super» burrito, the other was 2 smaller burritos. At this point, I noticed my server saying hi to 2 hot college age girls who came in. Before I even had a water, I saw him taking out a tray of drinks and chips/salsa. Ok, Ball 1? Not that bad, but I was feeling like my experience was not going to be all that great. It’s nice to see where his priorities lie. I asked for the 2 burritos, asking if they had to be the same or different ingredients. I was told I could mix and match, so I ordered 1 chicken, 1 ground beef. I asked for no peppers or onions, but wanted cheese, lettuce and sour cream. My bloody mary came, along with chips & salsa, which were both warm. Warm chips=fine. Warm salsa? Gross. The bloody mary was surprisingly awesome. The food arrived a good 15 minutes later, and wow, wouldn’t you know it? 2 ground beef burritos. Nothing else, no cheese, sour cream, etc… just 2 tortillas with some of the greasiest ground beef I’ve ever come across. The bottom of the burritos were already soggy with orange grease. I cut into one, and was sad. Strike 2. I had to go to the bar 2 times to get my water refilled, while I’m sure the ladies out front never got to the halfway point in their glasses. After I had given up, chopped both burrito’s open, moved the food around my plate, and covered it with my napkin(universal sign for«I lay this plate to rest») only then did my server come by and ask«How is everything?» Clearly customer service is an idea lost on him. When I asked for the check, he didn’t offer to remove my plate, so I had to sign the check with the check booklet in the plate of food. I didn’t care by this point, since I was sure it wasn’t suddenly going to get better. Me: «So, since you asked, the burritos were not really what I ordered. Both were ground beef, no sour cream or cheese.» Server:” Oh, really? Sorry“ Me: «So, I guess what I ordered, it didn’t really matter? I just get whatever the chef feels like sending out, huh?» Server: «Um… yeah, I guess… Sorry bout that» as he walked away. So, that’s the 3 strikes for me. Inattentive service, bad food, wrong order, and then to top it off, a clueless server makes no attempt to compensate me for a bummer meal. It seems like this place is trying– they have a Facebook page, signs all over saying to follow them on Twitter, specials all week, but when it comes down to it, lousy food and shitty service are going to put them out of business. I won’t be back ever, and will make sure I inform friends that if they’re looking for a shitty burrito, they should hit the Taco Bell a few blocks away. At least with the Bell, you know what to expect, and can save a few bucks. Grand total was $ 17 +$ 1 tip=$ 18 for a waste of an hour for me. Now I have to go find something else to eat. Sorry, El Guapo’s but your place is a total bummer. I’ll be sure to let my friends know.

Early dinner(5:30) on Saturday night. Service was pleasant and the staff were very attentive, everyone who stopped by our table(hostess, waitress, waterboy, bus boy & owner) asked how our meal was & if we needed anything(+1 star) The waitress informed us happy hour was until 6:00& margaritas were $ 3.50 during happy hour; sounded like a good deal to me so I got one… And was horribly disappointed; I wouldn’t have finished it even if it was free. I don’t know if they used cheap liquor or if the lime juice was expired but something was very off. On to the food: the first basket of chips & salsa is free, salsa was fine but most of the chips were broken into tiny little pieces, kinda hard to dip when the chip is smaller than your fingers. We also got guacamole, I barely remember it 24 hours later, suffice to say it was nothing special. I ordered two enchiladas mole, one pork and one chicken, served with rice and refried beans. Delicious! Clean, fresh flavors, topped with chihuahua cheese so not greasy, and the mole had a kick at the end. The rice was better than I expected, though I’d like to see black beans instead of refried. My friend ordered the soup & salad. Soup was fine(it was red so I think tomato), but she thought the salad was unimpressive; not enough dressing or flavor! Total bill for the two of us: $ 36 I’ll go back for the enchiladas, maybe try other mole dishes, but stick to beer & skip the guacamole.

In its former iteration, Berkeley Café, the food was tasty but overpriced, and the décor cheesy. As El Guapo, the food is not bad but the décor is dark and garish. They’ve crammed too many tables in with no sound absorption. A Mexican menu is ok on occasion but WFB desperately needs a restaurant on the order of say a Balistreri’s in Wauwatosa. Also, fake ethnic restaurants(i.e., those whose owners are not of the ethnicity they’re portraying) just rankle. If they were Mexican, for starters they’d never put an apostrophe in a Spanish name. No se puede.

ok when this place was berkeley’s i hated it. terrible food. so when the switched to mexican i was exceptionally skeptical. but wow were we pleasantly surprised! i know real mexican. now stuff like the empanada(cuban) isn’t exactly like one would expect(added red sauce and mexican influenced filling). but nonetheless, the food is really great. the traditional mexican stuff is fresh, simple and just great. the one item i was somewhat disappointed with was the refried beans. but everything else was really awesome. we have coa across the street and people rave about that place. coa has a more upscale feel but the food pales in comparison to guapo’s. i highly recommend this place.

If you’re watching your weight, you can find a slew of options here that will fit your caloric allowance. Everything is fresh, inventive, and NOTGREASY, which is a suprising take on Mexican in Milwaukee. I highly recommend the skinny margarita(think Bethany Frankel) which is a light, refreshing version of your tequila-laced favorite. I had the fish tacos: baked haddock, pickled onions, and red cabbage. It was an unexpected combo that left me full without feeling disgusting. My friend ordered the steak tacos which looked amazing as well. The salsa’s served warm. The atmosphere is decent. All in all I was pleased, but the bill was more than I think is appropriate for south of the border fare. One entrée and one drink rang up to $ 24. I’d go back, as it’s in my neighborhood, but I probably wouldn’t drive too far off the beaten path to experience.

Dining on a Thursday night with my wife and 9 year old daughter it was our first time to El Guapo’s. We were promptly seated. The place was ½ to 2⁄3 full when we got there in the 6 pm hour. It seemed to be a mix of early diners and happy hour left overs. Our first negative was the music which consisted of Rock music(Jimmy Hendrix, and teeny bopper– Kelly Clarkson) type stuff playing at a volume more suitable for a dance club than a Mexican restaurant. Our server seemed a little scattered and rushed but she was friendly enough. We asked if they could turn the music down a bit, and after a couple minutes they seemed to get the clue. They not only turned it down, but started playing some cool Spanish guitar music. Now we’re talking! We ordered 2 house margaritas which were C+ /B– in quality, some guacamole and our entres. The guac was interesting with large chunks of avacodo, and some kind of oil or «dressing» drizzled over it. Quite good. I had the El Guapo Taco which proved to be the best dish out of all ordered. It was a large grilled soft taco, with nice strips of steak, onions, peppers, queso and spices. Quite nice! The spanish rice was dry and relatively flavorless. My wife had a Caesar salad with an Empanada appetizer as her entre. The salad was made of «the lettuce I’d throw away» according to my wife and the app. was a bit greasy and doughy tasting. My daughter had a steak taco and fries which was fine. This place is a much needed addition to a very under served WFB village, that needs more nice family oriented restaurants. I hope this place improves a bit, and makes it in the long run.

Awesome chicken mole… huge plate with four pieces of chicken smothered in chocolatey mole sauce with a spicy zip. The entrée came with incredible polenta, bean dip and red cabbage Cole Slaw. I love authentic Mexican restaurants and though this isn’t that in ambiance, the food is excellent!

Again with the editing: They reopened as El Guapo’s cantina, looked at the meny, little less scattered than the old Berkely’s menu being«Mexican» food and all. Prices look to be a little lower, can see going 3+ times a month if the food holds up. Will have to try it out soon. Edit: Just walked past on the way home form grocery, they were putting out of business signs in the window We have only been here a few times despite being only 3 blocks away on the same street. Food is a little better than good, service has been very good. Have yet to take the kids there, but there are typically a number of kids in there, so I would have to assume the kids food is decent too. We have yet to try breakfast, we would regularly do breakfast there if prices were slightly lower. Otherwise menu prices are OK, a little higher than I would expect to pay for the quality of food, but I guess that’s the price of convenience.
