Decided to go natural after 25+ years of straightening… Went to Lois after reading so many reviews… Meg was no longer working at the salon (she really got good reviews too). I was not disappointed. Lois took the time out to do a consultation with me. Asked me what my expectations were, asked to see photos of my hair goals. This was not my first DevaCut so I was impressed… She was honest with me and told me I did not need a cut if I was growing it out, all I needed was a Bang Trim. She cleaned out the nape of my neck and around my ears and I was good to go. She showed me how to elongate the curls in the front by using the clips as weights… Overall, very happy. Made an appointment for another 3 months.

Jia gave me a nice curly hair bob. Good experience when your new to it. They explain the products that go into your hair and how to set your hair while it drys and the best way to wash it.

I had an amazing experience! I have type 4 hair and was nervous that they would not be able to style my hair.
The receptionist was awesome. My sylist Gina was wonderful. I felt no pulling or tugging and it was a excellent experience. She gave me a tapered cut and I could not be more happy with my experience.
I would recommend all of my fellow curly girls to give the White Plains location a try.

So it took me a while to write this review because I wanted to be fair. This was not my first time at Devachan, I have gone a couple of times usually for a hair cut with Lois. I have fine 3c hair and I was in need of a cut, my hair was acting all types of crazy. I decided to make an appointment and since Lois is pretty much always booked I decided to try another stylist, Thelma. I liked the hair cut it was fine, I didn’t ask for anything groundbreaking so she pretty much just gave my hair some shape. Now here is my problem the entire time she is cutting my hair she is bashing other products and telling me how my hair is dry (btw I actually use devachan products, I guess she assumed I didn’t). Now I get that you’re trying to sell devachan products but I’d prefer if you just let the products speak for itself instead of naming a bunch of popular products and telling me how bad they are when I didn’t ask. Also I did take some offense to her telling me what I needed to do with my hair, Lois was informative without being pretentious, I don’t think it was intentional I just think it comes off that way. Being that thelma has very long straight hair I have a hard time believing that she understands the everyday dilemmas of ethnic curly hair girls no matter how many heads she’s styled. So maybe it just boils down to what kind of stylist you like but I think moving forward I’ll stick to Lois she’s more my style.

Dominique cut my hair this weekend. It was my first official deva cut at Devachaun. And I left feeling thrilled. He gave me a beautiful shape and added just the right layers to lift off the weight of my hair. The staff were all very pleasant. Excellent salon. I drove ALL the way from CT and it was worth my time!

I recently had my hair cut with Pedro. He was not my normal stylist, but he will be from now on. I always like my cuts here, but never really thrilled with the drying. This was the first time I walked out of there and didn’t go home and re-​dry my hair. I told them I would write a review, but decided to wait till I actually dried my hair on my own. Now I can say that everything is perfect. The cut is great & I could style it well on my own. I highly recommend Pedro.

This summer I was lucky enough to score a last minute appointment w/​Lois. It was my first time in her chair. Lois took the time to listen to my concerns. She let me know what she was going to do before the cutting began. Lois shaped my hair to compliment my facial features & took into consideration that I want to grow my hair to a longer length. I’m very happy w/​the way my hair is growing out & will continue to book appointments w/​her.

Would like to thank Pedro, for his kindness and direction on washing/​styling my daughter’s hair. And what products to use and how to use them. He assured me of what I was doing was well and corrected me — professionally and with details on what to improve on. My daughter’s hair looked great for a wedding that she was the flower girl in. Thank you, Pedro. We will be back to see you.

I just had my first haircut at Devachan this weekend. I had gone somewhere else for a haircut about a month ago and it was the worst haircut of my life… I had the dreaded triangle haircut, which as a curly girl is my biggest fear when going for a haircut. But Lois to the rescue! She shaped it and gave it a totally new and better look! I couldn’t even stand to look at myself in the mirror before… I feel so much better. She really knows what she’s doing. All of the reviews I read about her were spot on! She is excellent. And she had squeezed me in… the stylist I was supposed to have did not show up, so she fit me in and apologized a few times for the mix-​up, even though it was not her fault and was doing me a favor. I highly recommend Lois!!!

I recently went to Devachan Salon and saw Meg. I cant tell you how long I’ve hated my hair. I’ve been a deva girl for the last year and felt my hair had no style anymore. Meg did her magic and created a haircut for me that fits my face and curl type. I love my hair now! I’ve gotten so many compliments and I can’t believe what the right cut can do for you. I never could imagine my hair would curl so much and look so awesome. Thank you Meg! I will definetly be back.

Love this place and Lois and Andrea made my experience even better. If you really want to learn and make your curls feel good and look good make sure you go with them.
Lois took her time to understand my needs and what look I wanted. I told her I wanted to grow my hair and she was able to satisfy my needs by giving my hair life again. It’s amazing the difference it makes when you cut your ends and the stylist gives it shape. I wish I would have gone sooner but glad it went well and I’m so happy with my results.
Andrea did a SUPERB job in cleansing/​moisturizing my hair. She took her time to explain every product she put on my hair and what routine I should do to keep it hydrated. Make sure to tryout their ice tea, it’s really good. Overall the atmosphere was very pleasant and right away I knew it was going to be good! Hope this helps:)

I’ve been coming to the White Plains location for quite a few years. Meg cuts my hair and she is talented, intuitive and thoughtful every time. She gave my curls shape and bounce! Victoria does my color and she did what no colorist was ever able to do– she brought my box dyed black hair back to a beautiful brown with soft highlights, all without ever getting brassy or orange! Victoria did my hair for my wedding as well & I couldn’t have been happier! I receive so many compliments on my hair now, but it’s all because of these wonderful ladies and the education they gave me. Devachan is THE place to go for curly hair!

I came to Devachon after a bad experience at another salon. I was so pleased with their service, the time they took to go over the hair cut and color, cand the quality of the cut/​color. Lois and Victoria helped get my frizzy poorly colored hair to look bouncy, ccurly, and healthy.

I soooo wanted to be one of the people who raved about the life-​changing hair experience but I just don’t think it’s for me.
Don’t get me wrong, all the descriptions are spot on, the attention and the way they teach you to wash, style and handle your hair. But my end result is just not something I’m loving. I have extremely fine wavy to curly hair and I feel like it always looks unfinished. The whole letting it air dry, placing clips in for volume thing has me arriving at work looking, well, not polished. Because I have fine hair and you let the ringlets dry without brushing, or fluffing, you can see my scalp. I keep waiting to love it but I just don’t. I do love the products and I will say when I left I had shiny, frizz free curls. I have not been able to duplicate them since and I’m going to give in a blow it all out tomorrow. I think people with very curly, thick hair are the ones who will find the experience the most dramatic.

Took me a while to really get comfortable with the cut. It looked like a mullet for a few weeks but it’s pretty fabulous and healthy now. Thanks Thelma!
I paid $ 120 which is out of my price range but it’s worth it.

So it was our first time and I must say worth every penny I was thee with my daughter for a bit over 2hrs but feel like we left with a associate degree in hair care for my daughter she was so excited to be wearing her hair down and not puled into a high ponytail. Now this is what a real curly hair cut looks like!

All I can say is that Devachan is. .. annoying. It’s true — Devachan is an experience. A smug, annoying experience. My haircut lasted about five minutes (my stylist said my hair looked fine and I just needed basic shaping) and the rest of my hour and a half there consisted of me waiting around, getting advice about curly hair that you can get from any stylist (yes, thank you, I know you’re not supposed to use combs or brushes on curly hair. My stylist told me that in 2003) and having my hair scrunched and slow dried. I heard lots of pitches about how their products are amazing and the only stuff that’s good for my hair.
They asked me what products I use — I replied that I’m faithful to Bumble and Bumble and Kevin Murphy. They hadn’t heard of the latter, but I did get a few facts about how Bumble and Bumble ruins hair. Seriously. It’s a red flag when a company has to put down competing companies to sell a product. As far as I’m concerned, a good product should speak for itself. And no, Bumble and Bumble and Kevin Murphy hasn’t ruined my hair, for the record.
As the junior stylist was styling my hair, the lady who did my cut kept checking in and asking things like «Okay, so what did we learn today? What have you learned about taking care of your curls?» and it was all I could do not to say «NOTHING. Jesus, nothing. Why is this taking forever?»
End result: My time there consisted of a great deal of flipping my head and scrunching and clipping. When I left, it looked like I had gotten a perm, and everyone I saw that day asked me if I had gotten a perm. It looked ok and was a fun change for the day, but this wasn’t a look that I considered my «natural» curl at all.
I have a very strong «low maintenance» value when it comes to my hair. I’m wash-​and-​go, I don’t straighten it or put heat on my hair at all. I don’t even have a hairbrush. I’m all about my natural curl. But my experience really didn’t reflect a natural, low maintenance philosophy — in fact, they made it seem like caring for your curls is a really ritualistic and time consuming process.
The worst part? When I washed my hair the next day, I saw that I still had a ton of split ends. Almost two hours and $ 120 plus a 20% tip, and they didn’t even get my damn split ends. And since I was super busy, I just got a pair of scissors from CVS and trimmed them myself.
Two redeeming factors, which is why this place gets two stars instead of one: 1. They really did shape it well, in a flattering shape, that was good for my face and lasted pretty long. It’s pretty much the same shape that you see in all their pics, and is sorta an «old lady» shape, but at least it looked nice, even after I cut off my ends myself, and 2. The junior who washed my hair and styled me was super sweet and friendly. She was hella likeable, and if it weren’t for her, my time spent there would have been way more annoying.
However, definitely not worth $ 120. I got a $ 45 Devacut from a place called Cally’s in Chicago that was way better.
PS: I highly recommend seeing the «not recommended reviews» for Devachan below, which Unilocal filters out. Usually the filtered reviews are made by bots or obviously competing businesses or disgruntled employees, but in this case, the bad reviews seem to be perfectly legitimate, from Unilocalers with other reviews. Not sure if Devachan pays for ads or just asks their employees to flag bad reviews on Unilocal,but other bad reviews exist. I wish I had noticed them earlier.

Not very impressed with the service. I was offered something to drink and was given lukewarm water in a champagne glass. For the price I paid, I was expecting ice cold water or the actual champagne.
I was not happy with my cut, at first. I walked out very dissatisfied, but I’ve come to realize my hair was going through shampoo withdrawal. The stylist should have realized I needed more moisture such as the set it free spray or styling cream while my hair detoxed from years of shampoo use. It’s been three months now and I’m always surprised by the compliments I get on my curly hair. I think next time I’ll splurge for a senior stylist or try the spa in manhattan.
The best part is getting your hair washed. You actually lay down in a recliner or lounger while they wash you hair. It’s fabulous.
Definitely worth a try.

So, this was my second time at a Devachan salon. I have to say, both times, I felt let down. I was hoping that my second time would be awesome since so many of my curly sisters rave about this place. But… it just doesn’t live up to the hype. I appreciate that they teach you about how to care for your hair, and cut it dry, but other than that, the prices are super high and the haircuts all look the same. Also my stylist was very bossy, and didn’t really listen to what I needed or wanted. I also felt that the receptionists were snooty and uninviting. I am hoping I will find a stylist that I love… but until then, I am not so in love with you, Devachan.
