Remember When Records & CD’s

Hank always treated my dad & I like family. My dad would visit Hank on a weekly basis and always walked out with a ton of great quality stuff. I blame Hank for my dads massive CD collection (well over 5,000 cd’s).

I remember when Remember When existed. I go to school out of state, and when I came back over winter break, I was completely dumbfounded that this place was gone. This was my store that catered to the birth of my love of vinyl and was worth the 12 mile drive I’d make each time. Remember When was a sort of sanctuary for me in high school and always gave me a place to go when I wanted to get out of my house and out of my town.
My record store here in Washington, DC closes in four days and am saddened that all these great independent stores are going out of business.

I was there on the last day and had gone mulitple times over the summer. I was just beside myself to find out that this great store would no longer be in business — held back a tear or two on the last day when I shook your uncle’s hand and gave him a small gift. He and the rest of the family worked hard to provide a record store experience that was truly unique in the suburbs.
I hope he enjoys retirment and I wish him and the rest of the family good health and good luck. I believe he was a bit of a Disney fan, so I gave him copies of the Song Of The South music soundtrack and the DVD movie, both of which are rarity items.

Hi everyone;
Just wanted to let everyone know that today is Remember When Record’s last day. Hank is my uncle, and I have so many memories growing up of him giving me my first Elvis CD, first Beatles CD, etc. Growing up we always went to him first for our music and nostalgia needs. The store was awesome and though I have a little bit different relationship with it than some of you (I don’t think he’s ever made me pay for anything); it seems like everyone here loved it just the same!
Thank you all for your years of patronizing his business! I know he appreciated each and every customer that walked through the door willing to buy a disc or a record over downloading.

It’s a shame this place is going out of business – this is the best record store in the western suburbs today*. Fantastic used rock, pop, and jazz vinyl selection (the basement room is a marvel), fairly priced, and good discounts on new stuff. Harkens back to a better time in the 1980s and 1990s, when good record stores still existed outside of Chicago (and so– close-​they-​might-​as-​well-​be-​neighborhoods-​of-​Chicago-​suburbs like Oak Park and Evanston).
(* Oak Park and The Old School are worthy competitors, but they come in slightly behind Remember When. And RW is definitely better than the over priced, mostly common records stocked only Kiss the Sky in Geneva. Also gives downtown shops like Dave’s Records and Reckless a run for their money in terms of used and new selections, which is impressive.)

You’ll find a really nice selection of grandpa and dad rock here, but that’s about where it ends. Their prices are average to the steep side, but he IS a retailer, not a garage sale. If you’re looking for the 50s-​70s, this is the place you’ll likely find it.

they have one of the best selections of 45’s i have ever seen. everything is in alphabetical order and very easy to find. the basement section is huge and the prices are great.
the owner hank is very knowledgeable and can get you just about anything. A+ vinyl shopping.

I’ve been shopping here since I was a kid. Hank is great, if he doesn’t have what you want he can most likely order it for you. He got me the new DEVO on vinyl this past summer. Lots of CDs, new and used and a huge selection of vinyl. Lots of fun stuff to be found.

It’s great they have an awesome and large selection of used Vinyl records. Typically not picked over like Reckless or other used outfits in Chicago. Not your place for Hiphop or blues (location) records, but if your looking for Rock and Roll or Jazz they have an excelent selection. They also have a great selection of new LP’s, and a stellar collection of used 45’s, in which R&B has a whole island devoted to itself. Also a ton of CD’s.
The best part. You can listen to the used LP’s and CD’s at listening stations.

I’m also a fan of Remember When and can’t recommend it highly
enough. I firmly believe if you walk out of that store without buying
something, you had no intention of making a purchase in the first
place. I had no idea of the basement vinyl shop until reading the
latest review hear. Incredible.
Anyway, in talking to the owner I found that business has not been
too good and there’s a good chance they will close down at the
end of the year. Don’t let that happen. C’mon, isn’t there a cd you
need to find as a gift? Aren’t there a few album titles that you got
rid of years ago and would like to replace? How about album
artwork? You know you can purchase frames for those albums,
don’t you? Please don’t let another good thing fade away.

I have passed by this a ton, my son had advanced classes on Sundays not too far away a few months back, but it’s closed on Sundays. I finally got here, and I loved it. They have an extensive collection of records, tapes, Cd’s (new and used), videos, DVDs, as well as collectibles of all kind, from bobble heads to lunch boxes. I was particularly smitten with some vintage Kiss picture discs, and Elvis action figures. All this, and the diversity of the music is wide. I found both Accept and Loudness Cd’s, my measuring stick on how obscure a places selection is. My only gripe with this place is that the prices are a bit high, not prohibitively so, but a bit higher than I’ve seen at comparable places. I hope to be back here soon, and hopefully to have more cash with me.

Found a second batch of hard to find Cd’s, my only gripe was the price. At some point I have to accept that if I had to get these on line and pay for shipping, it would probably be close if not cheaper here.
