BYO Burger

love this place! I’m glad they’re in the neighborhood. The burgers are great, and I like that they have. sides other than fries (their fries are really good though.) I like the regular burgers, but the veggie burgers are really good too.

With my family of four, we had a great burger experience at BYO. When we talk about going out for burgers, we all have differing opinions, so it can be difficult to find a destination where half of us don’t feel like we’re compromising… or overpaying. BYO burger is where all burger worlds meet. Choose your pattie, how its cooked, how it’s topped, the sides, etc. I had a great veggie burger with tots. Daughter #1 had a chicken burger with onion rings, Daughter #2 had a BBQ burger with standard fries, wife had a classic burger with waffle fries. Everyone was very satisfied…
BYO also offered unlimited peanuts and a TV with the Viking/​Packer game while we waited. Service was helpful (needed for their complex menu) and friendly (always nice). We’ll be back.

I’m really impressed. The ordering process is simple and easy. The food is delicious. My burger and everything on it was done exactly the way I like it. The prices are very reasonable. They have a good variety of foods to choose from including vegetables. Drink selection is small but nice, including both fountain drinks and a few flavors of Jarritos.
If you’re looking for a burger done exactly the way you want it at a great price you won’t go wrong here.

Mass confusion. The cashier didn’t know what she was doing, got my order wrong & three of the other members of our lunch party. The food took forever to come out of the kitchen, and when it did, it was cold and not complete. One person was supposed to get fries, they did not, one person asked for them to hold the cheese, it looked like they got extra cheese instead.
I had a chicken sandwich that had zero flavor and was cold as ice in the middle. Not one out of 6 of us liked it. We won’t be back.

The burgers were without flavor. Server was nice. $ 11 for a below average burger, fries and a Pepsi.
Will not be going back.
Several hours later that tasteless burger has left ill.

This is a pretty nice burger joint. It rides the line between fast food and a more traditional restaurant, so the quality of the ingredients isn’t amazing, but it’s pretty good.
This place’s main selling point is the many toppings available for the burgers. The burgers themselves aren’t great, but when you are able to load them up with eggs, bacon, several kinds of cheese, hot dogs, onion straws, a wide variety of veggies and sauces, and even peanut butter, the dry patties can be forgiven. All burgers are made to order, and they offer free peanuts to all customers while they wait for their meals.
I’ll be disappointed if this place suffers the same fate as Zantigo and Dino’s. Keep these guys in business!

Food meh. I had the «Cement Mixer,» which has PB, mayo, and bacon. I’d call it strictly OK. A far better alternative would be MyBurger, if one was close. Floors dirty, dead on a Tues. noon. Men’s room was filthy. Faucet had no handle. I got it going, but a kid or handicapped person couldn’t have. Lunch for two adults and three kids meals was $ 35– pretty high for fast food. I miss this spot’s former incarnations as Zantigo and Dino’s. Won’t go back.

Decent burger… Five Guys is WAY better! That’s where I’m headed right now actually… worth the drive to Woodbury!

Best darn burger I’ve ever had– fire-​grilled, with blue cheese crumblers, a big slice of onion and onion straws. Yum!

I loved my simple burger with American cheese & fried onions. Seasoning on the burger was great. I will definitely be back for more!

Good burgers, not the best I have ever had but if you like choices and burgers than you will love this place. A little tacky for indoor décor but hey if the food is good I could care less. Decently priced and fresh food gets this place 3 stars.

Surprisingly delicious! The fresh made burgers are super juicy, you can pick broiled or cooked on the griddle. The more toppings you pick, the more it will cost, but it is well worth it! Some of my favorite french fries from a burger place.

Great burger place. What more could you ask for? You can get everything and anything you want on the burger for a reasonable price. Burgers were cooked well and quite large for the price, the waffle fries were crispy and hot. I think it’s a great non-​chain place! I’ll be back.

Really liked this place. Inside is rather unassuming but the food is tasty. I liked the burgers, the fries and the onion rings. Awesome that they allow you to select doneness. Very friendly staff as well.

I could be wrong but I don’t think I saw bread sticks anywhere on this places menu so do we have such a thing as Unilocal trolls? or is this person who left the one star confused that this isn’t the Fazollis that was across the parking lot circa 1994? anyways this place even though its not a chain restaurant (There is one other BYO restaurant in Twin Cities area, I hardly consider 2 restaurants a chain), It still kind of reminds me of of a chain on the Five Guys burger level which I really like, but its not a pub nor a malt shop type of burger experience. This place might beat 5 guys, IDK, they are kind of at a tie. This place has great burgers, no doubt, and the waffle fries are awesome. Try the Juicy Lucy. The décor on the inside still looks like Zantigos with a few new signs thrown up so they didn’t spend a lot on redesigning the place, however there are a lot of chinese restaurants throughout the Twin Cities that you can tell used to be a Baker Square back in the day by looking at the outside,. Who cares what the place looks like, If they can make great food I’m eating there, period.

After reading some of the negative reviews, I thought I’d check it out myself. The burgers are pretty dang good and the waffel fries were perfect. I took the kids, who ate all of their food and both got construction helmets. Pretty cool.

OMG this was a GREAT PLACE to EAT !!! I was very surpised how good the BURGERS are. If you want to Build your own BURGER do it there. I sure hope more Twin Cities Locations OPEN UP !!!

The ideal of providing what we want right now has been applied to the hamburger at BYO Burger. Located in West Saint Paul on Robert, BYO Burger is the latest restaurant to occupy the old location of Dino’s Gyros and Zantigo. Hopefully, BYO Burger will have a little more staying power, and based on our experience I think it will.
My wife had been there once before, and was excited to take me a last week. The set up at BYO Burger allows each guest to create the burger they want. When you walk in you approach a table full of pencils and order forms so you can start making your choices.
Beef or chicken, charbroiled or flat top, pick a bun, pick a cheese, and then add all the toppings and sauces your heart desires. Some of the extras cost a little green, but a plain burger starts a $ 4.99 so you’re starting off pretty cheap.
After being completely overwhelmed by all the choices, I decided to try one of their signature burgers. The Cement Mixer came with bacon, lettuce, peanut butter, and mayo on a sourdough bun. I chose to add cheddar cheese and a fried egg because it didn’t seem to be quite bad enough for me.
Sara built her own with mushrooms, bacon, and bleu cheese. With drinks and one order of fries our bill came to just over $ 18, so I thought the price was pretty fair.
The burger were good sized and tasty. I really like the charbroiled flavor. My one complaint was that our burgers were over cooked. At BYO Burger you can order you burger pink, or no pink. We both ordered our burgers pink, but they came out well done. So I had a flavorful, but dry burger.
Despite the overcooked beef, I enjoyed my experience at BYO Burger. I guess like every other American I want what I want now, and at BYO Burger you get just that. Want a plain cheese burger, tots and a milkshake? Done. Want a double burger with everything on it, onion rings, and an ice tea? No problem. Just don’t ask for a beer because they don’t currently have a liquor license.

Honestly, I didn’t wanna give this place a chance after the past 2 restaurants at this location (from the same owners) died slow, unnoticed, and grueling deaths. As a dare to ourselves, my friends and I decided to give it a chance. It had a wide array of options, yet nothing too confusing. The fellow at the register was also friendly and helpful guiding us on our new adventure. I have to say I really enjoyed my custom made burger with BBQ sauce, it was delicious and my side of baked beans went perfect. I never get the chance to eat a good charred burger in the winter time, so this meal reminded me of the summer. It was also nice to order a good burger without being force fed fries or chips that jack it to $ 10, its your own choice. My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal, and frankly– we were pleasantly surprised it didn’t suck. If they had a Turkey burger I would give it 5 stars, maybe. Also they have 2 big TVs in there if you wanna watch sports, or whatever national disaster is currently on the news.

I went to BYO Burger with a couple of friends yesterday and I’ll admit I was wary since anything that moves into that spot seems to fail (Dino’s Gyros, T-​Mobile, Zantigo, etc.). We decided to give BYO Burger a try before completely condemning the place and writing it off as another soon-​to-​be member of the Robert Street Graveyard.
I must say, I was pleasantly surprised.
When we entered the building, the cashier was very helpful in explaining how the restaurant works and was very polite. There are menu options that have non-​custom burgers as if you were ordering at any regular fast-​food restaurant. And of course, since this is a BYO Burger, there are sheets with options for the customer to customize his own burger. I was impressed with the different selections of buns, as well as the fact that you can specify how well you want your burger done.
I ordered a char-​broiled burger with smoked gouda, bleu cheese dressing, bacon, a fried egg, the house-​made hot sauce (INSANELY good), as well as tomato lettuce and onions.
When they brought the burgers out to us (a nice touch for a fast-​food restaurant), I was immediately pleased to see that this was by no means a small burger. Naturally it was a bit messy, as you might expect when you order two different sauces, a fried egg, and bacon on your burger, but I had no trouble assembling it.
The taste of the burger was phenomenal. It was greasy, yes, but why come to BYO Burger if you’re not looking for comfort-​food style cuisine? West Saint Paul is certainly not the burger capital of the country, but I challenge anyone to find a better burger on Robert Street or West Saint Paul. I will be heading back tonight to try their chicken sandwich and hopefully some of the sides which looked essential to any greasy spoon.
Very reasonably priced considering what you are getting. It’s possible to rack up a $ 10 tab on a burger if you go overboard with extra sauces and toppings (which I did a bit but I thought it was well worth it). $ 4.99 for a single and $ 6.99 for a double, before extras. You’re still getting a better burger than you might find at an Applebee’s but for probably around $ 3 – 4 dollars less.
The only reason I gave this place 4 stars and not 5 is the fact that when it comes down to it, it’s still a fast food restaurant. I love the place for what it is, which is a burger place. Also, the decoration inside was sort of hackneyed and campy, but I could care less.
So the next time you decide to tank your diet-​plan and are looking for a good greasy burger, absolutely go to BYO Burger on Robert Street. You will not be disappointed.
