This office specializes in lifetime comprehensive care of the teeth and gums for you and your family. Dr. Stephen McLaughlin and two of his children, Dr. Caitlin McLaughlin-​Raiger and Dr. Ian Pol McLaughlin, each with different specialties, work together seamlessly to satisfy nearly all of you and your families dental needs. This practice has been providing these services to the West Roxbury, Roslindale, Hyde Park, Dedham and Needham communities and beyond for over 40 years.

History

Established in 1972.

Dr. Stephen V. McLaughlin started this practice in 1972. Dr. McLaughlin’s love for Dentistry apparently rubbed off because three of his ten children became dentists themselves and another became an MD. Dr. McLaughlin now practices with his oldest daughter, Dr. Caitlin McLaughlin-​Raiger and his son Dr. Ian Pol McLaughlin who share in his love for healing and educating patients about dental illness.

Meet the Manager

Dr. Ian M.

Manager

Dr. McLaughlin earned a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree at the University of Navarre, in Spain and he earned his D.M.D. degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.

He has completed extensive continuing ed in advanced prosthodontic and endodontic techniques, Implant placement and prosthetics, as well as orthodontics. He is an active member of the American Dental Association, the Mass Dental Society, The Academy of General Dentistry, The International Association of Implant Dentistry and the American Orthodontics Society.

Dr. M. is very family oriented. He is one of ten children and the philosophy behind his practice reflects this. He approaches each patient in a calm and caring manner. He educates every patient about his/​her oral health and ensures that his patients have a great dental experience.

He currently resides in West Roxbury with his wife Kathleen and four daughters. His interest include traveling the world, reading, writing, hiking, rock climbing.

Ian **saved my life** the other day. I had a dead nerve in one of my teeth from a previous crown, and it was causing me ANGUISH. Like, some of the most intense pain I have ever felt.
After an entire day of sitting at my workdesk nearly in tears, doing anything I could to try to get the pain to stop (nothing worked) I called Ian to make an appointment as soon as he could see me. Knowing he’s busy, knowing it might be a couple of days before he could see me, days I’d spend going out of my blinking mind.
He said, «I’m in Leominster, I can be at my office in an hour and a half, call me when you’re there.»
He showed up and removed the nerve, on the spot, with no assistant, at eight o’clock in the evening.
Two days later, I met up with him again and he performed a complete root canal.
Dude is a straight rock star as a dentist. I’m recommending him to everyone I know.

I moved to Boston in June and have put off finding a dentist, in fear that I wouldn’t find one like my dentist in MN. I looked up the dentist offices around me that my insurance covered. I picked a few out and then looked them up online. This office had the best reviews.
I called to make an appt on a Monday, which was my day off. They happened to just have a cancellation and could see me in 30 minutes if I was available. I immediately took the appt and headed over there. The staff was so welcoming and friendly.
Ian came out to get me from the waiting room and take me back to an exam room. Ian did almost my entire cleaning. He said he likes to the cleanings on all new clients so that he can get to know his new patient and their teeth. I was born without two adult teeth, which my orthodontist make space for only one tooth implant. Ian and his office have been more than helpful with trying to get me insurance quotes for an implant.
They have been a pleasure to work with and I would highly recommend his office to anyone.

My wife and I moved to West Rox 3 years ago and waited too long to find a dentist. Our procrantination ended up being a blessing when we decided to go to McLaughlin Family Dentists. Dr. Ian and his staff are professional, but also friendly and provide a comfortable atmosphere. Dr. Ian is exceptionally knowledgeable, enthusiastic and clearly dedicated to making sure his patients leave understanding the good and bad of their visit. Turns out that my wife’s lifelong dentist in Upstate New York really messed up her fillings. Dr. Ian made her feel at ease after he corrected the issues and reassured her things would be fine going forward. I don’t know what we’ll do if we ever leave West Rox. Bottom line… I HIGHLY recommend this place!

I have had a lot of bad luck with dentists. My previous dentists did poor fillings that would need to get repaired just a few weeks later. The work they did was often painful and they were always confusing with their post care instructions.
Dr. Ian McLaughlin was a welcome change to all of that.
Dr. Ian made me feel right at home! He sat me down and explained everything that was going to happen from beginning to end. His assistants were nice as well!
The work was practically painless! I had two extractions and I was shocked when he told me he was done. I hadn’t felt a thing!
Dr. Ian was also very thorough with the post care instructions for my extracted teeth. I had heard horrors about dry socket and Dr. Ian’s instructions helped me avoid that completely!
Here’s where Dr. Ian really impressed me. After I got home from his office, I got a call. It was Dr. Ian! He called to check in and told me that he had noticed a couple cavities that would need work as soon as possible! He saved me tons of money from having to get a root canal or cap!
Dr. Ian treated me like I really mattered. His staff was great and on top of all of that he was also very affordable.
Lynda in his office was great! She helped me understand the cost of the work and explained how much my insurance company would cover. Marybeth was also great! She set me up with a follow up appointment and was very nice!
I recommend Dr. Ian McLaughlin’s office to everyone!

I’ve had problems with my teeth my whole life. So when I went to a Parkside Dental in Back Bay for the first time, I was expecting the worst. What I got was worse than I expected. They basically told me that my teeth were hopeless, and my best bet would be to go to Tufts Dental School to try and save money on fillings and an implant. They also mentioned I should do it soon, before the infection in my tooth spread to my brain and killed me. Thanks. A thoughtful consultation, I’m sure, but not really what I wanted to hear.
I went to Tufts dental where they charged me $ 85 for a consultation, which was simply setting up an appointment. Thanks.
So, I spoke to a coworker who happens to be Doctor Ian’s brother. I forwarded him my x-​rays, and he called me on the spot and made an appointment. A year and half later and my mouth is fixed. I have cleanings every four months and get nothing but good news. I use a high fluoride toothpaste recommended to me by Dr. Ian and his hygienists, and it really has made a difference in mitigating the dental problems I was saddled with.
Dr. Ian took care of a bunch fillings for me, and Lynda has been enormously helpful working with my insurance and with me on scheduling payment.
The biggest work was a dental implant, which terrified me at first, but Dr. Ian was extremely professional and informative in explaining the entire process up front, telling me what to expect, and always being available to answer questions. The tooth that was hurting so badly that I couldn’t chew with it has been replaced by a perfect implant. I sometimes forget it’s even there, since after three months it feels like I’ve had it my whole life.
As someone who has had a lot of dentists, the one thing that sets Dr. Ian apart more than any other is his eagerness to explain procedures in copious detail (if you want him to, of course). He answers questions and provides consultation thoughtfully and respectfully. This isn’t a «sausage factory» practice, so to speak.
If you’ve ever had issues trusting doctors or dentists, or if you just want to know that you’ll receive excellent work and care, front to back, then I couldn’t recommend McLaughlin Family Dentists enough.

I generally don’t leave reviews but, McLaughlin Family Dentists have been my family’s dentists for the last 40 years or so. The whole staff is amazing. I’ve been seen by all the dentists at one time or another, mostly Dr. Ian and Dr. Caitlin. They are experts and really the only people I completely trust with my family’s teeth. Recently, I had to have my 4 wisdom teeth removed due to jaw problems and multiple fillings. Mind you, I’m 37 and was not thrilled at the idea! Dr. Ian gave me the option of going to an outside oral surgeon to be put under and have the teeth removed. He also said he could sedate me (awake) and remove them himself. It was a no brainer to have the dentists I’ve trusted for literally my whole life with my teeth complete this removal procedure. Fun? Well I would’t say it was fun but, it was really only two painless appointments with some minor discomfort for a few days after. No swelling, no complications. Just fast healing after following the Dr.‘s instructions. I’ve had friends get the procedure done at other places, being completely put under and they had pretty awful experiences. My recommendation, if need to have your wisdom teeth removed as an adult, and you have the option of doing it at McLaughlin Family Dentists, take my advice!

Dr. Ian was so friendly and professional. I live in Fitchburg so I went to his Leominster location. His staff was awesome too. I got lost (I ended up in Lancaster, I’m brand new to MA) but they were kind enough to hold my appt. I’ve already recommended him to my husband. Dr. M will be my dentist, my husband’s dentist and my lil boy’s dentist once he turns 2.

I recently had to find a dentist closer to home for both my daughter and myself. I was hesitant to do so because we had been with our dentist for over 10 years. I goggled good dentists in the West Roxbury area and McLaughlin Dentists came up with great reviews and those reviewers were not wrong. I was able to get an appointment almost immediately and the staff could not have been nicer. They listened to us and were very responsive to our concerns ie: cost, pain control, types of procedures etc. My daughter is very pleased with the results of her visit there and I am going to make an appointment for myself.
I would recommend that anyone looking for a great dental practice give McLaughlin Dental a try… you won’t regret it.

I visited McLaughlin Family Dentists in West Roxbury for the first time this morning for an overdue routine exam/​cleaning — AMAZING.
As someone who just relocated to the Boston area, I wasn’t really sure where to start in terms of finding an excellent dentist. Luckily, my girlfriend gave me the best recommendation: Dr. Ian. Also, as someone that has extreme anxiety about dentists/​healthcare in general — I believe I have found the perfect fit. I would highly recommend this practice and Dr. Ian.
Prior to today, I received several e-​mail and text message (very cool feature, by the way!) reminders about my appointment. It’s really great to get multiple reminders on devices you check often.
Parking is a breeze here (also a huge plus). Once inside, the office itself is very welcoming, of course stocked with loads of magazines (and on this occasion, some freshly picked apples!) and the secretaries are very friendly and welcoming. The wait wasn’t long at all — I simply arrived a little before my appointment to fill out a bit of paperwork.
Dr. Ian is extremely knowledgeable, funny, and manages to put you at ease by talking to you/​letting you know exactly what he is doing as he examines your teeth, proceeds with cleaning, etc. I can tell just by this visit that he definitely does a thorough job and genuinely cares about his patients.
Upon leaving, I got an appointment summary for my next few appointments (once again, a great reminder that I can post on the bulletin board at home). I also walked out of the office not dreading future appointments and with my teeth feeling super clean. I would definitely recommend this office and Dr. Ian to anyone new to the area and looking for a dentist or just anyone in general that may not be receiving the quality of service they deserve.
