I think it’s strange my experience was so different from other people’s. I actually had fun at my eye appointment. The doc was thorough and friendly. He didn’t push anything expensive on me. It was easy to schedule an appointment a week in advance. I plan on seeing him for my future appointments. The experience was charming and personal.

Firstly, He is completely disorganized and leaves patient information all over his front desk.
My biggest problem with Dr. Greenstein is that he is so unbelievably rude. I visited him for a check up and contact lens fitting. The exam was incredibly long and all of his equipment is very old. During the contact lens fitting, he spoke to me in a condescending way. I’ve worn contacts before, but he insisted in putting them in for me. It was incredibly uncomfortable and when he had trouble getting them in he actually started to raise his voice at me. By the end of the exam I was close to tears.
I was dreading my follow up visit and it wasn’t much better as he berated me for the way I removed the contacts from my eyes. He is just a complete jerk. He told me he’d call me back in two weeks when a new type of contact came in that I could try, but that was over two months ago and I still haven’t heard from him. When I received my bill, it was incorrect and I called him to follow up in this he told me he was out of the office and I should call back. At this point, I still do not have contacts.
Please, do not come here. I would rather pay out of pocket than ever see this doctor again.

Do NOT even consider this doctor. Please do yourself a favor and find someone else. I’d give him zero stars if I could
1) He’s very unprofessional and not organized at all!!!
2) I only wanted the comprehensive eye exam that was covered by my insurance… And that is what I asked for when I came in. Only he did two additional exams which he incorporated into the basic comprehensive exam. I only just found out because my medical insurance is billing me for these exams which he NEVER said he was going to do! I called my vision insurance and they let me know that he should have informed me of the additional tests before he performed them! Yah… He didn’t.
3) He is so rude! Got so upset because I wasn’t getting my glasses through him… It’s not my fault the eyewear at his office is from the dang 70’s! I tried on as many as I could but none fit me right. They were so tight on the sides of my head?!! And just hideous! So I decided to get my glasses elsewhere… And when I asked for my Rx… Got chewed up by Dr. Greenstein. Listen, I was raised right and taught not to be disrespectful and discourteous especially to my elders … So i was being so nice to him. Sigh… His lame argument was my insurance would pay for my glasses so why not take advantage of it. Yah… So he continued to lose his mind as I was explaining to him that my insurance would still pay for my glasses if I got them somewhere else … Sigh… Just thinking back on the whole experience is pretty awful. I explained I simply couldn’t find glasses that fit me right or looked right on me… I was never rude. Kept my cool and just continued to explain to him as nicely as ever… Sigh. To which he responded and I will never forget: «YOU’RE LYING!!! YOU SAY THE GLASSES DIDNT FIT?! THAT’S A LIE!!! WE HAVE OVER 250 FRAMES AND NOT ONE FIT YOU RIGHT!!! YOU’RE LYING!!!» … Yah… Sigh. So I continued to try and get my Rx… But he was raising his voice so much that his cell phone started breaking in and out… Yah… I gave him a fax number … Asked him to fax it to me… He never did… After a few more failed attempts to get the info from him. I got it over the phone and was done…
Never again!
Here I was trying to support my community and not go to the big franchises… Yah… Find someone else. Save yourself the trouble!

To be honest, I picked this doctor because he was the nearest optometrist covered by my vision plan. I did read the Unilocal reviews before going, but I’m glad I took a chance. I have never had such a thorough eye exam. He obviously knows what he is doing – it’s a very different experience than going to one of those franchise places. Lots of personal attention. I also liked that he was able to do a full exam without having to use the dilating eye drops, instead he kept the exam room dark so my eyes dilated naturally, so I could drive, go to work, etc. right after the appointment.
He must have gotten some feedback about the other reviews, because he was very careful in getting all my insurance info and all other bookkeeping details. If you are someone who likes to support local independent businesses, and are not too particular about office décor, Dr. Greenstein is definitely worth a try.

I want to echo Petunia’s sentiments about Dr. Greenstein — very disorganized. He always seemed confused and was never sure what my insurance would pay for. His Newton office is also very unkempt — there are boxes and dust everywhere and the equipment is clearly from the 1960s.
The last time I saw him, he gave me two types of contacts to try on and told me to come back at a later date wearing the ones I liked best so we could see how they fit and possibly order them. We set up an appointment for later that month. I had to cancel the appointment due to a conflict and told him I would reschedule. A few weeks later, I got a bill in the mail charging me for contacts I never ordered! I called him to inquire about the bill and ask him if he had ordered contacts for me without my permission. He proceeded to tell me he was with a patient and couldn’t talk — how convenient — but that he didn’t remember that he ordered contacts off hand. So now I have a $ 180 bill for contacts that neither I nor he never ordered. Will be visiting his office today to have words…
