The Thayer Hotel at West Point

I arrived at this beautiful hotel and was looking forward to my training, after checking in to my room and started unpacking I found out that I forgot to throw my belt in my bag back in California. Now this is a military base and the nearest place to buy a simple belt was 20 mnts.
I decided to ask the front desk for help. That’s when I met Mark, he immediately started thinking of ways he could help. He talked to a lady that was working in the back office and came back saying «sir we can help you» Kluwanie helped me and was the sweetest person. She gave me a ride in her personal car and I was able to get that damn belt and attend my training. This is what I call going out and beyond.
Thank you guys for making my day.

Not sure why he’s such a miserable person but he sure knows how to spread it to his guests. For some reason guests that pay $ 500 a night deserves to be treated like crap

There are not many hotel options near West Point and we chose The Thayer despite the spotty reviews here and on TripAdvisor. We were very happy with our decision. This historic hotel is an absolute gem and can’t/shouldn’t be compared with new chain properties — it’s not remotely in the same category and expectations have to be fair. The building is gorgeous and we enjoyed exploring the building and the grounds.
Valet is necessary at The Thayer since the hotel is up on a hill and the parking is down below. The bellman were excellent and very accommodating. Check-​in was great and we were given the lay of the land and all of the information we needed about the hotel and its amenities — restaurants, coffee shop, etc. The room lights are a bit tricky, but with an explanation at check-​in, we figured them out quickly.
We stayed in an Executive Suite on the top floor and were very pleased with our room/​s. We had called ahead to let them know we would be using the Master bedroom, living room couch and Murphy bed as sleeping space — everything was made-​up perfectly and awaiting our arrival. The suite was very nice and super comfortable for a family of four. Housekeeping was impeccable and it was our pleasure to leave a larger tip than usual. While we met other guests who were awakened by freight trains, we didn’t have that problem; either the windows are better in the Executive Suites or the higher floor helped. Quiet and comfortable.
I assume The Thayer is far more expensive during peak season, but we had an excellent stay and would highly recommend staying here when visiting West Point.

It pains me to say, but I was disappointed with my wedding here — here’s why:
THE GOOD:
Let me start by saying that everything leading up to the wedding was GREAT. The service was truly phenomenal. My catering manager, Joanna, was just so nice and helpful. She was so patient when I forgot to get her my guest count and itinerary on time. She knew all of the vendors and helped me select the ones best for me. They are lucky to have her on staff!
The bridal suite is comped on the wedding night, but my parents stayed there and put me and my husband in the Presidential Suite — WAY better. It had a small kitchen, 1.5 baths, a large sitting room and bedroom, and a dining room. The views were amazing. Having two entrance doors was also very convenient. One goes directly to the bedroom and the other to the entry hallway. Yes, it is that large. There was great natural light for photography, so that was really fantastic. We used the pullout coach bed and an extra cot to sleep all of my bridesmaids the night before, so all of the spaces were well-​utilized. I was disappointed that the room didn’t have as much décor as I would have expected, given the history of West Point. It was too bare, and we had to make last-​minute purchases of flowers and trinkets to decorate it.
The grounds were gorgeous. We had the entire basement level that opens up to the river. Although I never went in the Pershing Room for the Cocktail Hour, and never tried the hors d’oeuvres, my guests could not stop talking about how delicious everything was. They said the same about the dinner. I was so excited that I hardly ate anything, but I am so happy my guests enjoyed the catering. It was truly top-​notch. We have some fabulous photography from there.
The shuttle service for our guests to and from the church was so convenient. Guests shared that it made travel very easy for them, despite the fact that it was Acceptance Day [which they should have told us when we booked the weekend]. The driver was late with the second shuttle when we went to do pictures, so it was annoying that we had to wait for him at the church. It decreased our photo time by 30 minutes. However, overall, I highly recommend the shuttle service if you are getting married at one of the chapels, because driving around campus is confusing for first-​time guests.
THE BAD:
First, I had guest welcome bags for all guests. One per guest, not one per room. These specific instructions were reviewed with staff. They had the roster of my guests. The staff did not give out welcome bags to most of my guests. I was PISSED. Plus, those bags had items that were custom picked and perishable. We threw away money. They also had the «breakfast brunch» card there. Breakfast was paid for by my parents. But, since most guests didn’t get their bag, they paid for their own brunch. How embarrassing is that? I could not believe that my guests didn’t get the amenities I put together for them. Of course, no one informed me, but when we checked out, we picked up almost all of them… when I asked what happened, they said no one asked for them… WTF. Thank you for embarrassing my family and making us look cheap.
Second, the bridal party suite off of the ballroom. It was supposed to have an attendant so no one could go in or out besides the bridal party. Well, two people had sex in there, and they weren’t in the bridal party. How do I know this? My sister walked in on them as they were trying to sneak back out. Gross. Truly. It even had a key code, and I had asked for it so my bridal party members could self lock and go in and out, but it was not provided to us. What was the point of that «private» room?
Third, the way dinner was handled KILLED the vibe of the evening. I wish I were exaggerating. First, the room was too hot. I understand it is August and all, but I had my older guests dying because of the heat. It was really unfortunate. I even asked to have the AC on its coldest, and it still was too hot. Now, here’s how the dinner setup killed my party. As soon as we walked out after our introduction, we went right into the first dance. We prompted our DJ to get everyone on the dance floor immediately, and they did! Dinner was over an hour away, so we wanted a party. Well, unfortunately, the maitre d’hotel had everyone sit back down so they could take filet vs fish entrée orders. When I arranged dining, I specifically proposed pre-​selecting to avoid this, and they guaranteed this was better. I was livid. It killed people’s buzz. We were just sitting around, waiting to order. We entered thirty minutes after people sat in the reception hall. God only knows why dinner orders weren’t taken then. It really bothers me, still. The vibe was just ruined. Again, I predicted the problem, requested a solution, and was assured the problem wouldn’t occur, but it did.

Came here two days before Christmas after a day Lon drive from Virginia during a PCS. BLUF: Find somewhere else if you’re looking for a hotel room. Couldn’t turn on the heater because it was noisy and had a horrible stench come out of it.
It is certainly nice scenery, maybe good for photo ops, but if you have to sleep here… Good luck. I kept my shoes on because there were stains on the floor. Oh. And hopefully you don’t drive a manual car because they can’t valet it.

Great service by all of the staff. The room was awesome. Nice touch having pictures of the general and his exploits in the room. While the trains did make noise, it was not obtrusive and quick. Would highly recommend anyone in their 4 year journey of watching their cadet grow, attend this very prestigious landmark.

I’ve always enjoyed this hotel and its classic and timeless ambiance. Call me minimally travelled, but I’m convinced this is one of the best kept pieces of architectural history in the U.S. The service is every bit of what is to be expected and more.

Eh just ok.
Lights in rooms are super annoying as they are all hooked up to motion sensors. So at night as you toss and turn; which you will because the beds and pillows aren’t that great; the lights turn on everytime. The tv is also hooked up to motion sensors and after it turned off due to inactivity we couldn’t get it to turn back on and had to call someone. They came and fixed it right away. The lights are all super dim and there’s no overhead lights. Housekeeping only came once around 3pm on Saturday during the Friday-​Sunday that we stayed. Food was pretty good at macarthurs and the view if you get a room with a view is decent. We had the «bridal suite» was nice for a random weekend but if I was a bride I would’ve been throughly disappointed. Not a bad room but certainly nothing special. The train is very close and very loud but they warn you many times so we were aware of this. Did wake us up but again we knew and were expecting it. Overall just an ok place. Also just a heads up you will be stopped at the front gate everytime you enter the property and have your ID scanned and your trunk may be checked quickly. The hotel is on USMA property.

Bottom Line: The Thayer Hotel needs adult supervision from someone, possibly some direct owner involvement. However, in Highland Falls, there is not a better hotel option. Possibly, contracting with Marriott to manage the facility would improve service. The Thayer is not a five-​star facility as stated.
On December 16^th, we drove up from the City and stayed one night at the Thayer Hotel. There are a number of things that were unnecessarily annoying. The needed adjustments have little to do with spending money on the hotel.
1 — When I tried to book directly through the Thayer, the room was about $ 50 more expensive. This was primarily due to large fees and taxes. When I inquired as to why the fees and taxes were higher than in NYC, I was told that taxes were seasonal. This year, I have spent more than 60 nights in hotels and have traveled often for a long time. This is the first time I have ever heard of seasonal taxes. In any event, the guest services representative assured me that I was uninformed and that seasonal taxes were a common practice. I tried to clarify if it was the taxes or fees and she told that taxes were adjusted seasonally. Anyway…
2 — I booked a night through Expedia, a third party provider and saved about $ 50 in taxes and fees. What was not presented on the first Website page is that there is an additional resort fee of about $ 12 that is to be paid upon check-​in. Supposedly, this pays for Internet, mandatory valet parking, etc. I did not like the fact that it was presented somewhere within the Expedia reservation process and not clearly stated up front. I would not have complained if the $ 12 fee had been rolled into the price.
3 — Upon checking, I was also presented with some sort of waiver saying that multiple freight trains pass during the night. This should have been disclosed before check-​in. Ear plugs should have been offered. Also, I was asked to acknowledge that hot water would be off after 7:00 AM. Given the exact time hot water was to be turned off, this was scheduled maintenance. Horrible planning! This, the train waiver and the Internet fee presented at checkin were unacceptable and made me feel scammed. Scammed at the United States Military Academy!
4 — To his credit, the on duty manager called and offered two complimentary breakfasts which was a positive good will gesture.
5 — Also, the stopper in the bathroom sink did not work well and water was exceedingly slow to drain. The hot water cap was off of the handle. Housekeeping should have noticed this.
Having twice been stationed at West Point, my initial customer response was internal so the management would have an opportunity to respond. After checking out of the Thayer, I received a «personalized» form e-​mail from Rick Minicozzi, Managing Partner. I responded in some detail and if there had been a response I would not have posted this review.
The Hotel Thayer is an interesting hotel at a historical location. There is no better place to stay in Highland Falls. Until management changes, plan to be gouged a bit and be sure to take ear plugs.

We stayed here on a Monday for a conference we had at West Point on a Tuesday. The grounds are gorgeous, the architecture is beautiful. However, our room was subpar for the price we paid, the heating system let out a smell if it ran too long and the housekeeping wasn’t what I expected. Customer service was inattentive and dismissive; we had to escalate our concerns to a supervisor. We did enjoy a few nice meals and service at the restaurant. Overall, it was an ok stay.

Wow, how misleading all of these reviews are! I stayed here on a Tuesday night in November. Booked my room the same day on the hotel tonight app. We checked in around 11:30p, room was on the fourth floor facing the Hudson River. Gal at the front desk said the train horn sounds throughout the night in case we wanted to face away from the river. I used to live on a river with train tracks and I live in nyc now so there’s no way a train is going to bother me, I reckon if you live in the country and sleep in silence the passing trains could bother you.
It was a Tuesday night so Zulu outdoor rooftop (2^nd floor roof over banquet halls) bar was not open and therefore not loud outside our window. It was fun to walk around the grounds and the rooftop at midnight under the starry sky.
The hallways in the hotel had a delicious fireplace smell to them, I asked the front desk how’d they manage the smoky delicious smell, he said it as from the first floor lobby fireplace, the smell wafts thru the hallways, apparently some people complain about this to them because people think there’s a fire in the building.
Our room was cozy, the view was beautiful, the bathroom was big and comfortable.
Everything about our stay was awesome, staff was friendly, rooms were clean.
I loved it here and can’t wait to go back.

My boyfriend and I recently stayed at the Thayer after a West Point football game. The room was lovely — we chose a room facing campus so we wouldn’t be bothered by the train noise as noted in some other reviews. The room was beautiful and well appointed. The building itself is lovely and historic, and the grounds are so scenic with gorgeous views of the Hudson and the last remnants of fall colors. Brunch was awesome and decadent, staff was friendly. Really all so positive. I forgot to bring a cell charger and our server in the Patton room went out of her way to hunt one down for me. So helpful and nice! Thanks so much for an awesome weekend.

I stayed here for one night back in June (2015) for a wedding reception held at the hotel. The food was great and the service was pretty good. Several people at my table ordered the steak, and we had to beg for just one knife to share, which was just, well weird. The hotel is right near train tracks — and they make you literally sign and initial a form in SIX places stating that you are aware of the noise and you won’t complain/​ask for compensation/​etc. — but to be honest — I did not find it that loud or offensive. Also, just an FYI — the hotel is literally THROUGH the West Point gates — so be prepared to show ID every time you go in and out!

I have been a guest at the hotel 3 years in a row for an overnight stay for a conference.
Beautiful grounds and the staff are all very polite.
The rooms are very clean, and the beds and pillows are super comfortable.
The only thing I see that has declined is the food. They must have a new chef, food was much better in the past.
The rooftop bar is nice, but no where to sit except around the bar if it rains.

I had my wedding here recently, so this review is mostly about having events at The Thayer (although our guests and wedding party that stayed at the hotel had nothing but good things to say about the rooms as well).
I wanted to have a brunch wedding with views of the Hudson River, and The Thayer was exactly what I was looking for. They were accommodating and always pleasant, even after responding to what felt like the zillion questions I had leading up to the big day. Stacey helped us book the space, and then Joanna took over to figure out catering and other day-​of details. Everyone was very helpful and because of their involvement, the day went so smoothly. They kept things on time and made sure myself and the groom had everything we needed. I don’t know how they did it, but they also ensured that we had an unseasonably beautiful 80 degree day in the beginning of May. Beyond the coordinators, the food was fantastic, the bartenders kept the drinks flowing, and the service was impeccable.
For anyone considering the Hudson Valley as the place for their wedding, I would absolutely recommend it. Since we did brunch it was more reasonable than other places, but even the traditional dinner packages were less expensive than elsewhere, with incredible value. And the views are unbeatable!

Had so many high hopes. I review so I hope that they get better with details.
Went in the room and put a coat on the bed and dust flew every where. Like powder. Called front desk and they sent someone up and after investigating figured that when they painted the room /​sanded they must have not covered the bed. First of all this work was done awhile ago and why would you leave sheets on that long and not change fresh for a guest. The place was filthy with dust.
Second room they took us to. Sheets had stains and spots of them?, red tape and lint in the sheets. No attention to detail. We stayed in this room.
The restaurant food was not good. Over cooked the steak. Cold mashed potatoes. It was unbelievable that such a place that looks so high end could be so normal and not amazing. Disappointed.
Fire alarm the last day which was handled well and emergencies are not part of review but it was funny how the weekend just kept having something wrong.
There is not much to do around here either. We Went to cold spring one day and had more fun. Wish we had stayed there.
Best part is Jackie at the restaurant with that smile. She was very kind.

Stacey is the most A M A Z I N G event planner I’ve ever met! She is so sweet & detail oriented. She responds quickly to any questions & goes wayyy beyond her call of duty every time without fail. She made our wedding phenomenal & DREAM COME TRUE! It was all because of her!

Nice hotel and very scenic. It was much smaller than I thought it would be. I also felt that it was not worth the cost. I paid around $ 400 per night which was way too steep. We had a rental car and it was damaged by the valet service. They offered to pay for the repairs and we had to fill out forms with the hotel. Since it was a rental and insured, we did not need to proceed with the claim. Kind of put a damper on the end of the trip though.
The best part of the trip was the roof top bar. We ordered appetizers and drinks and had a great time. They do not have any frozen drinks however. I ordered a mango martini and received some kind of lemon martini without being informed that my drink was not available. I guess they thought I would not know the difference between mango and lemon.

Stayed here for a wedding, my biggest complaint is the the prices are outrageous for what it is…
I mean our room was cleaned just about as soon as we left the room but I couldn’t justify 225 $/​night as a wedding rate. There are no attractions really aside from West Point itself. The food was okay but expensive as well.
Beautiful view…

Checking in to this venerable location, in the lobby with polished woods, stone floors and great front door valet service. No «extra» parking charges, so tip well!
Rooms were comfortable, spacious and clean — with state of the art lighting and temperature control.
Wi-​fi was $ 9.99 a day, but 3G worked just fine.
You can choose between «academy» and «river» (slightly higher rate) views.
There are two bars — the indoor Patton — and the Rooftop. Patton was good in the heat of the day while we had time between the ceremony and reception. The rooftop was great for our post-​wedding party and offers a spacious patio with lots of seating and a large central bar. Service was good in both spots — all self serve at the bar, but the bartenders kept up despite the large group.
Unfortunately, no food can be ordered on the Rooftop bar, so you can trudge down to the pantry in the lobby. There were tasty sandiches, fruit, snacks and assorted drinks available until the 1 a.m. close.
The Patton offered a decent selection of finger foods, burgers and sandwiches.
The McArthur Restaurant is also in the hotel. We only had our Sunday brunch there, but the food was delicious and the service was good.
Would definitely recommend if you need a room in the area!
