Golden Cab

I called to schedule a taxi for 5 people from a hotel to the port (6.1 miles) and was told there would be a fee for extra people. (I expected this.) Once we loaded up the cab and pulled out of the hotel parking lot, the driver refused to turn on the meter and claimed it was broken. He said it would cost us «hundreds of dollars» to go 6 miles if he used the meter. He then tried to charge us $ 60 for the trip, which was four times as much as the trip should have been when we calculated the amount based on the formula on his windshield ($ 1.75 for the first .1 miles then 25 cents for each .1 miles). We told him to pull over if he thought he was getting $ 60 for the ride and he refused to stop. I told him that the trip should be $ 15 based on his formula and plus $ 2 per person for extra people and a $ 5 tip, we would pay him $ 30 and if he wasn’t happy with that, he needed to pull over immediately. He begrudgingly agreed to $ 30 but claimed that was a ridiculous price for the trip. He then called his supervisor and (in Spanish) he explained that we had agreed to pay $ 30. He didn’t realize I speak Spanish and knew he was not at all bothered by the amount based on what he told his supervisor. He tried to claim he was «just joking» when he asked for $ 60… Yeah, «just joking» unless he was able to dupe us out of $ 60. Unscrupulous douchebag.
