History
Established in 1948.
The Barn Family Shoe Store has been a family tradition since 1948. This family owned and operated business has been serving generations of families for more than 60 years continues to be an award-winning shoe store throughout the Boston area. The Barn was founded by Russell Wennbergh, an entrepreneur, who had a vision of how selling shoes could evolve into a thriving business. He began selling sneakers from the trunk of his car at a discount, and then from rented warehouse bins. The business took off as families from the Newton area flocked to the store. When customer demand exceeded his supply, Russell took over the entire warehouse at 25 Kempton Place, off Washington Street in West Newton, thus creating one of Boston’s most recognized shoe stores. The Barn remains in this original location, still delivering an unmatched combination of top quality brands with a vast array of styles, backed by excellent service and competitive pricing.

Business Owner
The Barn Family Shoe Store has been a family tradition since 1948. The Barn was founded by Russell Wennbergh, an entrepreneur, who started selling sneakers out of the trunk of his car to warehouse to retail store, thus creating one of Greater Boston’s most recognized shoe stores. The Barn remains in its original location, still delivering an unmatched combination of top quality brands with a vast array of styles, backed by excellent service and competitive pricing. After Russell’s death in 1964, and his wife Lillian’s astute leadership, the business was transferred over to their daughter, Karen Stives. Karen was an Olympic Equestrian Champion at the 1984 Olympic Games, and after her retirement from competition, she parlayed her world-class rider skills to an equally successful business owner. Karen expanded The Barn to include The Kids Barn. The store continues to win numerous awards since its founding featuring extraordinary selection, quality, and service for all generations.
