For me, this place was most unpleasant. The music level is so loud that you have difficulty hearing your own headphones.
However, the real shocker is trying to cancel your membership. My fault because I am not a lawyer and did not read the really really fine print that tells you the cheap price comes with an indentured servitude of 12 months.
And then, you must notify their billing company 60 days in advance, by certified mail, to avoid the contract automatically renewing.
So even if you sign up for the cheap plan, expect to be billed for life unless you follow the complicated cancellation process and time it out to avoid the auto-​renewal.

Do not join until they change their business practices.
The credit card my fee was associated to expired. I did not receive a letter in the mail not a call from a human. The emails and robo calls appeared to be scams therefor ignored. $ 50 fee when I updated my card at the gym…
Joining is easy, in person online at the gym, no problem. To cancel, you have to MAIL a certified letter 60 days before the membership terminates. Why can’t this be done at the gym? I signed up there, canceling should be just as simple.
Facility is clean, equipment and staff are good, no classes or day care.

My membership is still not cancelled despite mailing the required letter 2months ago. The staff at the gym were always great, unfortunately the choice to use ABC Financial is awful! They are unresponsive and a huge headache to deal with. I hope this club chooses to bring their financials in house or to another company.

Have not been to this Retro in a few years. Gym is larger, with new cross train and ab areas, new equipment and very clean. Staff is very friendly, will definitely return for a workout when I’m in the area.

In the area for vacation and wanted to grab a workout.
$ 15.00 for the day which is $ 5.00 cheaper than planet fitness.
Still expensive considering monthly membership with contract is $ 9.99.

Place is relatively small compared to other retro fitness’ that I have been too. As a result place is crowded. Not a large selection of hammer strength. Free weight section is small and people were standing around waiting for benches.
Worst part of the place was the water fountain. The water is warm and the water pressure was non existent. I know Retro’s are budget gyms but a water fountain that dispenses cold water at a gym should be a requirement.
But when your on vacation and want to grab a workout this place will suffice.

Okay, so much has changed. The mat area is now its own room, and it just makes the place feel a lot bigger. There’s a ton of equipment in there, including a crossfit jungle gym. There seems to always be someone cleaning, and they have spray and disinfectant wipes all up in that bitch now. The people at the desk are always friendly, and if anything is ever out of order, it never takes them longer than a couple days to fix — different from other Retros in the area. Showers still look new, and even though the place gets packed during peak hours, during off-​peak it’s practically empty — cool. I know it’s still a hassle to cancel, but I’m more than happy to go here for now; it’s a clean gym that seems concerned with making itself better for its members.

The low rate is great but the main drawback is the owner. I’ve been to a few gyms in the area, but this is the first one in which I have been called an «assh*le» by the owner. She lumped me in with a few meatheads that are obviously frequent patrons of the place. I was surprised when she looked right at me and told me «Stop being an assh*le! Don’t leave the machines racked with so many weights!» I am a chubby little round facds guy. There is no way I could have left that many weights on the machines, but I’m guessing that either logic isn’t her strong suit or tanning beds kill brain cells. Either way, you’d have to pay me $ 20 a month to get me back in that place.

This is just a place to work out. I’ve had both bad and good experiences with customer service here. It is a franchise and is priced very affordable so my expectations are low. They do have a wide array of machines for both strength and cardio training and a decent fee weights area. The place is pretty big but it can also get pretty crowded, again, just what I would expect from a big franchise. The one thing that I really like is the movie theater/​cardio room. I love movies and watching a film while I’m on the elliptical machine tends to make me workout a bit longer than I would have otherwise. All and all, it’s just a decent place to workout at a reasonable price.

Out of all the reviews i have written on Unilocal this one is the most deserved. This has to be the worst experience of customer service i have ever had in my entire life. I have been going to retro fitness in Neptune along with my girlfriend for the last year. We just moved to Ocean township and decided to start using this gym because it is closer to our new home. I was in a great mood, my brother joined me to visit this gym and he was going to sign up as well. We walk in and i scanned my membership card and i stood with my brother as we began to explore our membership options. The girl Jasmine who helped us started to tell my brother that if he signs up he can bring a guest anytime he wants. So in my head I’m thinking it would be nice if i could take advantage of that promotion as well. So i asked if my membership allowed me to bring my bro as a guest. She seemed to have a very difficult time explaining the policy of the gym to me. All she said was i have to keep coming there for my membership to change. That didn’t sound right to me. So when i asked penetrating questions about my plan she grew very annoyed and answered me with rude tone and nasty attitude. I asked again, «What do i need to do to change my plan to that»? She could not deliver a clear answer. I feel she just couldn’t describe what she wanted to say which i am not upset about. what i am upset about is that she said «i have been trying to explain to you 5 different times» but still i didn’t understand what she was trying to convey. So i asked her why she is so rude. she told me that that’s how she treats all customers and if they don’t like it they can leave. I told her i would complain to her manager, She said «go ahead people do that and call corporate all the time» My brother said «i bet they do». She started to clean the area nervously because she knew she was being disrespectful to paying customers and members. Then she said get the f*** out of here! I could not bleive it. And i am stuck in contract? I have to go there and see her and be uncomfortable now? I want cancel and i cant because I’m in a contract, the contract from hell. I then went to my regular gym in Neptune so i could work out, On my way out i tried to cancel and he wouldn’t let me because of the contract. I started to tell him how poorly i was treated in West Long Branch and he right away knew about their poor customer skills. He said «Was it Alissa»? I said no Jasmine. I guess the manager is Alissa who already has a negative reputation among colleagues and members. Throughout the entire time i maintained a regular level of tone and voice. And yet i was mistreated with impatience and rudenessTHAT IS NOT HOW YOU TREAT PEOPLE. JASMINE IS THE EMPLOYEE RESPONSIBLE FOR MY NEGATIVE EXPERIENCE!

This place is awful, Pass pass, pass! Much better gyms out there! Spend some extra money for a real gym!

$ 20/​month is the main positive. The gym is new. Not a great location-​along a worn out parking lot at the end of an ugly business park. Weight machines are not very smooth in operation nor are the stations placed in a logical progression. It seems very crowded– everyone is on top of each other, which implies poor space planning. They have a dark bicycle room with a movie showing. they could have shrunk that to give more space for a better flowing weight or machine area. There are no keys for the lockers. A new gym could have lockable units with keysthat you carry with you, saving users one more tiny hassle, for a nominal overhead cost. The lockers are clean, really tiny, and the few showers are OK. Overall, its the price that saves the day– its a very basic place, with almost no extras unless you count the TVs on the bikes.
The cancellation is tricky and not easily understood (mystery rules pop out that were never explained) but Alyssa, the owner, does try to work with you. If you use a gym lightly or are a serious rat, this may work OK.

I originally joined in Woodbridge (Iselin) which was very convenient to a job I no longer hold. I’ve tried Middletown (also reviewed), and started going to this location as it was on my way to work.
It is now obvious that the gym is not for me. People don’t wipe down the equipment (gross), the trainers teach their clients to use the benches as high steps and don’t wipe down (disgusting), and the signage for the locker rooms is so poor and the staff is so oblivious, that I found a man in the women’s locker room (frightening).
On top of all this, it’s a hassle to cancel. They require a 60 day notice (which is in the contract). The contract also states that notice must be presented to Woodbridge (where I signed up) but no where does it state that after so many uses of another location, they transfer your membership. So, when I mailed a certified letter to cancel to Woodbridge, only then was I informed they transferred my membership. They never informed me of the transfer when it happened.
I then sent a certified letter to the West Long Branch location only to be told that I was liable for payment through April 7^th, because that was the date the club was opened. WHAT!!! I thought this was month to month? And even if I was required for 1 year, it had already passed. And I didn’t sign up at WLB!!!
Onto my THIRD attempt to straighten this out with their billing company. Finally, someone has their act together. I’m only liable for 60 days from the date of notice, which by this time is much longer than I had intended.
You really do get what you pay for.
