West Linn Ki-​Aikido is a satellite dojo of the Oregon Ki Society, led by Paul Ward Sensei. Our goal is to bring the martial art of Ki-​Aikido and Ki Principles to the community of West Linn, Oregon. Students will learn: calmness & confidence; to be relaxed yet strong; meditation & breathing; discipline & tradition; martial arts & self defense; mind & body coordination.

Aikido is a Japanese martial art originally developed by Morihei Usehiba in the late 1920s that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting the attacker from injury. Aikido techniques consist of entering and turning movements that redirect the momentum of an opponent’s attack, and a throw or joint lock that terminates the technique. Ki-​Aikido is a style of Aikido created by Master Koichi Tohei (10th Dan) in the 1970s which combines Aikido techniques with a heavy emphasis on «Ki Principles».

West Linn Ki Aikido is a recently opened satellite dojo of the Oregon Ki Society.

The Oregon Ki Society (founded in 1974) and it’s affiliated Northwest Ki Federation encompasses dozens of dojos with locations in Oregon, California, Hawaii, Washington, Canada, Great Britain and the Czech Republic. The Northwest Ki Federation was founded by and is currently led by Calvin Tabata Sensei, 8th Dan and direct student of Koichi Tohei.

The Ki Society is an international Aikido martial art organization founded by Master Koichi Tohei in 1971 while he was the top worldwide Aikido instructor (and 10th Dan) at the Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Japan.

West Linn Ki Aikido is led by Paul Ward Sensei, 1st Dan of the Oregon Ki Society. As 1st Dan he holds a certified black belt in the martial art of Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido and a Jokyu Ki rank. He is a direct student of Robert Hart Sensei (7th degree dan), Louis Sloss Sensei (7th degree dan) and Calvin Tabata Sensei (8th degree dan) of the Oregon Ki Society. He began & continues his training at the Northwest Ki Federation headquarters in Tigard, Oregon.

In addition to his training with the Oregon Ki Society, Paul Ward Sensei is a former student of world renowned self defense instructor Rory Miller and top national firearms instructor Grant Cunningham. He has nearly a dozen various certifications in self defense & firearms from top certified instructors & law enforcement.

Paul Ward Sensei is a resident of West Linn, married, with two young children in the local West Linn school system. He is also the owner of the software company Media Mechanic in Lake Oswego.
