History

Established in 1963.

The Sunset Marquis opened its doors in 1963. It was the brainchild of George I. Rosenthal, the founder of raleigh enterprises. After completing a deal with Playboy to establish its West Coast Headquarters and a new club on the corner of Sunset Blvd., George realized that the entertainers and guests of the club would need a place to stay. this was the hotel’s raison d’etre. the hotel was named after George’s first born child, Mark. They called him «Markey,» which morphed nicely into a title of nobility, Marquis, just off Sunset Boulevard. Over the years litanies of bands and movie stars have made the hotel their home away from home. The Stones, Jimi Hendrix, U2, George Clooney and Brad and Angelina to name a few. In the 1970’s, the hotel underwent its first expansion with the addition of 14 villas and the villas gardens. This concept was dramatically expanded through the completion of the spectacular new villas, gardens, SPA and RESTAURANT.
