Sunset Marquis

I have stayed here many times over the years, the first being around 2002. I have stayed in various villas, standard rooms and deluxe rooms. The vibe I once felt is no longer there. The familiar faces have all gone. Still the staff are great. I love how once you check in they always recognise you and you are greeted by the doorman when you stumble home across the velvet rope they put up outside to control who gets in (the bar can be busy late at night). At any rate the main problem is that unless you get a new villa your room is very likely to be noisy and old. Unfortunately all floors in the main building below level 3 will be noisy from people above. The deluxe rooms are not bad though, spacious with a separate lounge and bedroom. What is missing is a coffee machine. This is a major pain. You have to call room service. The interior of the old main building is drab and the carpet is kind of horrible, and 1969 style wood paneling is beyond hideous. We were woken up early Sunday morning with people outside our bedroom window sorting out someone’s wardrobe of Hawaiian shirts and disco pants. Was kind of amusing contemplating who it belonged to.
So I may or may not stay here again If I do it will certainly be one of the new villa’s, which actually are pretty nice. Their website reservation system is a bit clumsy, hence I accidentally selected a deluxe last time.
So if you stay here just try to book a room on the top floor or insist on a new villa.
Location is good. Parking these days is only by valet at $ 40 per night (used to be self park).
One more thing. They have this rock n roll theme which I personally find annoying, as if it is a desperate attempt at being cool. Some silly marketing gimmick they would be better off dropping imo.

One of my favorite places in the city. Absolutely five star quality in all aspects of this hotel. The service is top notch, everyone is kind and welcoming, restaurants serve incredible food, and the general nightlife surrounding and at the hotel really offer a classic LA rock n’ roll feel. They have an incredible bar in the sea in is pretty cool at night you might even run into a few rock stars along the way.

Holy shizzballs! This place is bomb!
They gave my kid a free towel, hat, shirt, and Voss water. Plus he got his own tiny robe to walk around in. He looked hella cute.
Don’t touch dat mini bar tho, $$$$$$. Get the homemade chips from room service.
The beds are stupid amazing.
I told myself I was only gonna give 5 stars to a place on Unilocal if I saw Nic Cage there. I did not see Nic Cage here, but I gave it 5 stars anywho.

I can only say what a beautiful and enchanted oasis this hotel is. You cannot beat this location, so close to the Sunset strip and all the find restaurants and shopping. Do check out the spa and the two pools, again I can only say what a great hidden get away this is.

Why does this place have such great reviews? I’ve only been here for an hour and I’ve been thoroughly disappointed.
Check in: straight forward. Fine.
Room: definitely not a four star hotel room. It smells like old smoke and must, carpets are gross, and has banged up old school doors. I can also hear every noise the room above mine makes. My room is on the ground floor with a sliding door that opens into the courtyard and pool, kind of creepy that someone could just look in at any time.
Amenities: you have to pay for wifi, which I wouldn’t normally complain about, but there is almost no cell service in my room. It’s going to be a struggle to post this. Pool looks fine, although it’s in a weird courtyard right off of the lobby so there is zero privacy of quiet. The bar and restaurant look pretty popular.
Hotel overall: outdated and nothing special.
Workers: mediocrely helpful and not super friendly.
The price of this place is decent for LA but you can find MUCH nicer places for just a little bit more money. I’m glad I’m only here one night.

This was an absolutely amazing hotel! My friend and I booked it for a quick LA getaway, and while I’d checked out the website and a few reviews, I was blown away when I got there. The courtyards and outdoor areas were amazing. We spent a lot of time just wandering around the candle-​lit paths in the evenings. There were lots of couches and benches around so you could have a quiet conversation or take a drink out there after dinner.
There were two pools, and they weren’t ever super crowded, so you’d always get a chair and fast drink service. We ate at the restaurant, and had drinks at the Bar 1200 pretty much every night, which was lively yet cozy. Our room wasn’t fancy, but modern and clean. Staff was really friendly and there was always someone at the front desk to answer questions or make recommendations.
I love the rock ‘n’ roll history of this place. It just had so much character. I would definitely come back here.

Forty years ago — back when it was a divey Sunset Marquis with a dirty astroturf-​surrounded pool, people took pictures of their hedonistic rock star friends passed out on their plastic patio furniture.
Sometime in the recent past, the folks who brought you heavily manicured gated apartment complexes purchased this hotel and gave it a kind of Floridian lawn in the jungle kind of vibe. IT IS REALLY FITTING FOR THE AREA! I mean — jesus — even with the lush green and secluded tropical plant-​lined paths, you cannot really forget you are in drought-​stricken Los Angeles. Look upwards into the sky and you’ll find high-​rises under construction voraciously towering the nearby area. Maybe if everything withers away when the water runs out, and the two pools dry out, you’ll find the aura, a semblance, of the cool rock star hotel that the books found in each of the hotel rooms and the art gallery in front is trying to push about this dump.
When I was staying in the hotel with a friend, it was so air-​conditioned and the grey cubicle kind of rooms that exude the near colorless gradient of the innards of an empty seashell gave me a kind of sobering headache. My friend kept pushing me to look at the book — look at the book! The heavy table book contained pictures of Joe Strummer, Joan Jett and Bob Marley in the 70s, back when this place seemed to hold a kind of edgy vibrance about it. It’s strange in a way because what’s cool about this place can only be found in ‘the book’ and in their art gallery. Everything else is now clean, hidden, pool and $ 6 toasted bagels at their breakfast place.

One star taken away due to the fact that for at least a year their next door neighbor continues their construction project.
This means that every 8 am onwards during weekdays you will hear banging and clanging that makes the walls shake!

The pictures on the website don’t do this place justice, it is so gorgeous! The courtyard and grounds are absolutely beautiful. There are endless hidden areas to escape to and enjoy a private conversation or to just relax and read a book. I love how there are two pools as well. There’s a more modern one in the main courtyard of the hotel, and then there’s a fabulous vintage one in the upper garden. I also love how they’ve kept the more historic parts of hotel, like the old villa by the upper pool.
We just stayed in a Junior Suite but it was great! It was actually really spacious, with a nice size vanity area to get ready, a separate eating area, a comfy bed and good size patio.
I should also mention that all the staff here were so nice and helpful, which always makes your stay that much better. I would love to come back again!

I’m hesitant to spread the word because as truly iconic and legendary as this grand est. is, it remains a hidden diamond, gem, geo, rock n’ roll monument.
Dennis Hopper, Dave Gahan, Fleetwood Mac used to staycation there. But forget the legends.
This is the perfect place for right now artists, writers, filmmakers, musicians making their way without any unnecessary brag. The majority of people are there to keep it low key, have meaningful conversation, and sip on the drinks provided by a truly friendly bar staff… The patio is mysterious and dark, romantic. The bar is amber shined and the gallery across the hall is full of rock portraits I wish I could line my apartment with…
The manager Marc is a majorly accommodating good soul…
So this is the place if you just finished an art project, booked a national commercial, or published a book to celebrate your hardwork… Or just want to mellowly let your hair down and have a wild evening…
This is the best place to hang out in LA!!!

My boyfriend booked at villa for us in the back part of the Sunset Marquis about three months ago for the weekend to celebrate our anniversary.
It was WONDERFUL! The rooms and grounds were so beautiful, and the staff made us both feel very special.

Good to be back home, the hotel is a great hideaway… Old-​school with hip new appeal. Great location with very nice suites. The grounds are fantastic, privacy with the location for action, restaurants, food, shopping — — - whatever you need.

What a great hotel with a fantastic history!
The rooms are fantastic, great showers (huge shower head). I stayed in a junior suite. Definitely a fun and hip vibe with great service and amenities. There is not much parking so I believe you will have to do valet. This is definitely not an inexpensive hotel.
Many rock and roll stars and celebrities stay here.

As you can see from my reviews, I don’t like to write bad reviews. I either just let it pass & I focus on the positive. However I simply cannot ignore the disrespect I experienced today. Here is my FIRST BAD REVIEW in the entire years I’ve been a Unilocal member. Horrible. Horrible. Horrible managerial service. We spent over $ 600 for 3 hours at the spa & pool side. (Btw-​The spa service was amazing!)
This review is for the manager only, not the staff at the spa & pool. The manager named Tilly degraded my husband & I when we just wanted our car back after our amazing, relaxing massage. (Totally ruined the experience!)
She said my husband was too intoxicated to drive, while I was completely sober & ready drive home. I FULLY understand the liability protocol & appreciate the concern for safety– BUT I was completely sober & able for the simple fact that I needed to get home to my children. I was the designated driver. Also, I am fully aware of the Valet Liability Agreement, so it was absurd that she would berate my husband after I made it aware that I was his designated driver. She then proceeds to say it is «protocol» to hold a vehicle for at least 3 hours if someone appears to be intoxicated [which she made no sense given the Liability Agreement THEY issue on their OWN ticket stub, & when I had already told her I was the designated driver] …all while speaking to us in a derogatory manner.
(In all fairness, my husband did hand the valet our ticket, in turn– they made the assumption that he was going to drive; WITHOUT regard for the fact I was the designated driver. At first, I had stayed quiet but decided to speak up after I could not deal with Tilly patronizing my husband any longer.)
After several minutes of trying to get our car back, they told us to take a «3 hour walk». We obliged because to their ridiculous demands & walked off to avoid further issues since she obviously would not listen. In doing so [after an hour] …I decided to call the manager Tilly to come to a resolution because I needed to get home to my children by a certain time. She then told me it was a «just a suggestion» to take that walk… after their security tried to escort us out & threatened to call the Sheriff for an alcohol test. Wow. [Then on the phone, she started backtracking & finding loopholes of excuses to her ignorant demands after they threatened to call the Sheriff. What a joke.]
I do NOT recommend this placed based on their manager Tilly’s prejudice & ignorance. We had amazing time at the spa & pool — but the manager’s condescending attitude was uncalled for. We did not deserve to be berated by Tilly. Nice way to treat patrons what spend more in 3 hours than most of your standard room guests who stay 2 nights. Very disheartening.
If you’d like to pay good money to be embarrassed, ridiculed then condescended… Tilly will do a great job at that. Also, if you plan on getting a spa package where they happily and encouragingly give your guests champagne as part of the package– remember NOT to enjoy yourself to them [even though you spent your money to do so] …or they will ream your ass at valet. Lol.
Side note: after the phone conversation with Tilly, I mentioned to her about the Valet Liability on THEIR own ticket stub. And how her supposed «protocol» does not make any sense. Also, being that we co-​own 2 establishments in Los Angeles [in which we have recurring accounts with LA County valet companies in the 5 past years], her «protocol» is unheard of by law. (Pls view the
website under Valet) …Especially since the valet ticket we were issued at the premise has the standard valet liability agreement that we issue at our establishments. It seemed to me that she was just giving us a hard time for NO reason. We eventually our car back after that phone conversation. Upon returning to the valet, she apologized & we left. Interesting, that her «protocol» told us to come back in 3 hours. Next time you decide to berate your patrons, get your «threats» to call the sheriff, your «protocol» straight, and the law correct. Tilly, you might want to read the Liability Agreement before spewing out your own rules. It’s not professional to be condescending & then apologize after you embarrassed my family, yourself & your establishment because of your personal biased, ignorant inconsistency. I would’ve rather you followed through with your ignorant threats instead of that half ass apology. That way IF and WHEN the «sheriff» shows up, so would’ve my lawyer.
I was appalled and very upset during this whole debacle (which did not make the situation any smoother). BUT after being disrespected in such a way; how else would any human being [knowing her own rights] would react to such derogatory? So much for customer service and our «relaxing day». I left shaken and disappointed.
However, i do not have any disdain towards the security or valet. I understand they were just doing their job under Tilly’s order

Can’t believe I have lived in Hollywood or LA almost all my life and never stayed here?! Super cool place, fun hip vibe, quiet and romantic and super fun pool by day. We stayed in a villa and the bed was SO comfy!
Had such an amazing staycay with my man and will definitely be returning soon! If you aren’t from here and are looking to run in to a celeb, great spot for that too

This is one of my oldie but goodie places in all of LA…
If I had any friends or family visiting from out of town this year, I’d definitely bring them here to their restaurant/​bar area in the back outdoor patio area of their hotel.
It has all the glitz and glamour of Hollywood without all the fuss.
Fancy yet tasteful without the hassle of everything else that might be associated with the LA experience…

I love the Sunset Marquis. This place is legendary. It’s chic and edgy with amazing art work throughout. I’ve had plenty of nights in the bar and restaurant here. Über cool vibe, this place is perfect for a special occasion night in LA or just to meet up somewhere seductive for a drink.
A few weeks ago I got to experience the presidential villa. I was invited to a party here but I have to say, I was charmed by the sexiness of it all. This was a luxurious two-​story space with a private yard, private entrance and personal drive way. Everything was beyond comfortable. It was lavish, upscale and exclusive.
The Sunset Marquis is dope. The night I was here, there was a crowd of pre-​teens camping out across the street hoping to get a glimpse of the One Direction guys who were staying here the same weekend. At first I thought it was cute but a day later it was just creepy. Don’t those kids have parents? :-)
The Marquis is going to be yes. For drinks, for dinner, for beautiful night in the hotel. It’s everything LA is expected to be.

Even if you don’t overnight here, do make sure you get here at some point in your LA life. The pool area is very stylish (a little small, but very cool). The pictures spread throughout the hotel are simply amazing… if you’re a music fan, the gallery and the photos and other random artifacts scattered about the hotel are a must see. They truly have some incredible photos of most of the greats of rock n roll.
Staff is uniformly friendly and efficient. Soothing pools with colorful fish run throughout the main area of the hotel. The bar is beautiful and the on-​site restaurant is a perfect business lunch spot.
A gem that manages to feel peaceful and hidden but also completely part of the LA scene at the same time.

A beautiful hotel tucked in between all the apartments, it’s not much from the outside, but it’s truly a classic hideaway, also very comfy and cozy. Can’t beat the location, walking distance to Sunset strip west, lots of shopping and dining, as well as bars and lounges.
Since were were just staying for one night, hubby booked a junior suite, turned out the junior suites have just been remodeled, and they are great now! All the junior suites are facing the pool, with spacious patios, the first floor ones have direct access to the pool area, that’s great for summer pool times! Both pools are heated, and open till 10pm all year round.
The junior suite is small, but with all the convenient functions, it’s actually pretty good for a couple. In-​room safe, fully stocked mini bar, small refrigerator, good sized bathroom with his and her sinks, the shower was amazing. Also the patio balcony with cute comfy couches and lovely pool views, I think it’s good enough for overnight stay! The 24hour room service was awesome, food was very delicious, was too drunk to take photos, loved the shrimp cocktail and Vegetarian omelette!
The hotel grounds are so beautiful, lots of small lounging areas, the villas are tucked in the back, lots of trees and flowers, cavatina restaurant on site. This hotel is perfect for weekend getaways, either you are a couple or an entire family, I think it’s safe to assume that everybody would have a great stay here!
The staffs were so friendly and professional, everybody was extremely pleasant. We definitely had a great overnight stay here, can’t wait to come back soon!
Ps. Central air control, need to call them to bring a heater if it’s too cold. Also the Internet can only connect to one device. No free bottle waters are provided.

My family and I came to the Sunset Marquis for a little bit of a family reunion over Labor Day weekend, and really enjoyed our stay. We stayed in Room 91, which is one of the one-​bedroom villas towards the back of the property.
The outdoor landscaping itself is one of the highlights of this hotel. You enter off a relatively quiet street, at the end of an artificial cul-​de-​sac, and passing through the main hotel, enter a lush tropical jungle that drowns out all of the city noise, the harsh sunlight, and the heat, and just makes everything feel cool and serene.
Our room was in impeccable shape. The one-​bedroom villas have a sizable living room as you enter, with a large (maybe 6 – 8 people) dining table, sink and fridge, and a couch area with a TV. The bedroom has a large and incredibly soft bed, with lots of drawers and closet space for your things. Our bathroom was almost as big as the bedroom, with a huge deep bathtub and a glassed-​in shower with two showerheads. That shower was a real treat, I have to say. Everything was clean, in good condition, and maintained at least twice a day (morning cleanup, and evening turndown).
We spent lots of time at the pool with our kids, and although we were one of the only groups that had kids at the hotel, no one gave us a hard time or asked us to keep it down (and believe me, the kids did their best to be loud and obnoxious). There’s great drink and food service at the pool, which makes it nice to really relax and not think about much of anything.
The hotel has a partnership with the Equinox health club around the corner on Sunset Boulevard, and my wife took advantage of that every morning to go and get some exercise before the day got started. The walk to the fitness club is about five minutes, and the whole process seemed very easy.
The hotel has this reputation of being very popular with rock stars, and so one of the options for kids is to do their «Future Rocker» program, where the kids get a passport, and have to take it around to the various parts of the hotel to collect stamps and prizes at each location. Our daughter enjoyed it a lot.
The Sunset Marquis is an independently-​owned property, and you can tell that the staff and management cares a lot about the property, the guests, and keeping up their excellent reputation. I’d stay here again in a heartbeat.
