Well first of all I waited an hour to go back to the exam room. Then another 30 minutes for the dr to come in. He came in and spent less than 5 minutes with me, probably a lot less but I wasn’t timing him. He was in a big hurry. My diagnosis was of a benign self-​limiting nature that will resolves on its own, though it can reoccur. Well he prescribed me steroid drops, which after doing my own research online, I found it can cause my condition to come back even worse after the course of treatment. He also wanted me to come back again in a week so he could examine the eye again, even if it did clear up. Really? Come back to sit in your waiting rooms another hour so you can spend less than five minutes with me??? I don’t think so. I would not recommend this doctor at all.

I agree. Dr. Sygiel is fine for a basic eye exam. But he failed to diagnose my pre-​existing condition, and, as a result, he caused a corneal abrasion during what should have been a routine laser procedure to remove scar tissue left over from the cataract surgery he also performed. I was in severe pain for several weeks. I went to a specialist at Kresge Eye Institute — awesome. He my condition and waht casued the problem in about 2 minutes. Dr. Sygiel never took the time to diagnose the distinct nature of my corneas and as a result he used the wrong instruments for the procedure — causing the abrasion.

I went to Dr. Sygiel last summer because my vision was somewhat blurred in both eyes. He diagnosed me quickly with severe chronic dry eye, and treated it quickly to get it under control.
The problem began when the right eye really never got better and he just kept applying the same treatment and basically told me that there was nothing more to be done.
After a year I found another Dr. (Dr. Mian, Kellogg Eye Institute, Ann Arbor) and he in one day diagnosed me with an irregular surface of the cornea. He performed basic tests (like tear production tests) that Dr. Sygiel never performed and 6 months later (after minor surgery) I can see clearly.
Dr. Sygiel may be fine for basic issues, but my experience is that beyond that, you’re best off with someone else.
