Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary

Riverlands now has their indoor visitor center open — grand opening a few weeks ago. Great place to stop by for information on the area — as well as knowledgeable people who can answer questions about what birds may happen to be in the area at the time. Check them out on facebook.

The National Audubon Society has designated the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary as an Important Bird Area.
Come here to see a handful of uncommon and rare birds — including hundreds of bald eagles who live here most of the Winter, trumpeter swans (seeing these fly in formation was a first class treat!), and white pelicans, all of whom migrate along this portion of the Mississippi River year round.
Only bummer: totally unprotected from the wind, and it was biting, freezin’ ass cold out there. But, worth it.

Getting here:
From Alton, Illinois, cross the river and it’s right there.
From St. Louis: I-​70 East to I-​270 North/​East. Take I-​270 to 367 North (Alton exit). Follow to the Clark Bridge (Illinois state line). Follow signs for parking.
