History

Established in 2014.

Built in 1930 as a funeral home, this lovely building became private dwelling near 2000. In December of 2013, it was purchased with the intention of creating a theatre and art gallery. Over 100 volunteers, members of the Village Playhouse and friends and family members of the new owner (Erico Ortiz) helped to make the conversion from empty (haunted?) funeral home into a thriving art gallery and theatre performance venue.

A Grand Opening was held on March 1, 2014, with over 300 people in attendance throughout the 7 hours of live entertainment which consisted of dance, music, and theatre performances.

Since the opening, 11 very successful art exhibits have taken place, featuring established and emerging artists, with multiple receptions open to the public.

Theatre goers have experienced seven different theatre productions by the Village Playhouse (VPW) and Cream City Theatre Company.

Concerts and recitals have been held by Sound Check Studios and the Skai Academy.

Meet the Business Owner

Erico O.

Business Owner

Erico Ortiz was born in Puerto Rico and was raised in Milwaukee. He earned his undergraduate degree at Marquette University (Spanish Education) and a Masters Degree from UW-Milwaukee (Administrative Leadership). After working for Milwaukee Public Schools (teacher, administrator) for 33 years, it was time for retirement and a new direction.

Erico has worked with several community theatre companies, both on stage and off, something he still enjoys today, and has served on the Village Playhouse board. He plays guitar and directs the Spanish choir at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Parish in Milwaukee.

A self-taught artist, painting became a passion since retirement. He dove into the arts world by becoming involved with Riverwest Artists Association and the Sheboygan Visual Artists. He has exhibited throughout Southeastern Wisconsin. This latest venture, the purchase of an art gallery and performance space is proving to be his greatest venture.
