Don’t come here expecting anything fancy. It’s pretty much a hole in the wall but the sushi is some of the best I’ve ever had. The service isn’t great but it’s not the type of place where great service is expected. I had miso soup to start and it came with some free edamame. Then I had the spicy salmon and avocado roll and the enoki roll. Very fresh and delicious!

Now this is what really sushi tastes like. This was my second time here and it was better then the first. Amazing sushi! I will keep coming back.

Edible, but not tasty. How people can give this place five stars is beyond me. They don’t even have regular soy sauce! Do yourself a favor and go next door to Mr. Sushi.

Me and my boyfriend needed a new sushi place so we tried this based on all of the other good reviews. the people were nice and there were a lot of regulars there that seemed to be happy so that was encouraging, but we didn’t have good service at all. we weren’t brought menus, it took a while for someone to even come over to us, we ordered drinks that never came; we felt ignored. the actual food was ok. the fish seemed pretty fresh so that was good. i appreciated that they give you tea and soup with your order. I’ve also never had tempura like they make it here before. it’s harder/crunchier than what i’ve always had elsewhere. not a huge fan. but not the best sushi i’ve ever had. it’s pretty affordable here which is good, although i’m still trying to find a new go to sushi place in the area, this was not the one for me.

You simply cannot beat this place on every level. Fresh, high quality grade sushi, in a family type environment. Complentary sides are served while eating in. The service is warm, inviting, and professional. Outstanding.

I was not floored. The workers were nice but I found the sushi to be very salty. I know there are better places around, but as it’s nearby I might consider stopping by again. I just wasn’t wowed when I ordered out.

Came In on a Saturday a Saturday night. Place was empty, wife and I were a little scared. We were greeted warmly by a nice couple, presumably the owners. Given menus promptly and some STRONG green tea to accompany us while we browse the menu. We settled on some classics(shrimp tempura, California roll, spicy tuna etc), In addition we tried a * Sam Roll. After ordering complementary miso soup and edamame were given to us. So far so good. Shrimp shumi– good flavorful appetizer Sushi was prepared quickly, fresh and tasty. The evening topped off with a free moshi(I think that’s how you spell it) ice cream. Good place, check it out!

So good, and so affordable! This place is amazing. Some people have said it’s a hole in the wall… There is still some construction in the building next door, but the restaurant itself is finished inside and there’s a decent amount of seating. Also, there is waiter service. I’ve only gotten take out, but the people leaving after having sit down service looked happy. Over all the restaurant is clean, friendly, affordable, and has delicious sushi. I got the spicy salmon roll, Tokyo roll, and sunflower roll. They were all very good, but I recommend the sunflower roll the most. It’s unique, and delicious. I’ll attach some photos of the menu and sushi as well. Enjoy this awesome find!

I stumbled on this place on the way home from the Yankee game last week when all of a sudden I was yearning for sushi. Unilocal actually led me here and I am so glad we went. The place was small but packed. A very modest establishment with an innovative menu with very fresh fish and a really talented sushi chef. I actually wanted to back the next day, but am showing restraint and waiting a week!

This place is a jewel. Every ingredient expressed with clarity and the highest freshness and quality. Humble little family place where they passionately attend to every detail. The inappropriately named«sweet roll» — tuna, tamago, yellow radish, mass ago, avocado, and crabcake, all wrapped in avocado, was a creative revelation. Likewise the sunflower roll. The tastes were so well articulated that I never touched the soy or wasabi. Didn’t want to obscure any of the chef’s intention. The only time that has happened before is at NYC’s legendary Yasuda, where the tab was 8x higher. Not much impresses this jaded foodie. This place shocked me.

Best sushi ever. EVER. We are sushi fanatics and are always looking for a good place to eat with quality ingredients. Well this place is an hour away for us and we still come as much as possible. Husband and wife run this place together and are always friendly. Prices are great and we never leave hungry. Their sushi is always tasty and the ingredients are always fresh. The romantic roll and crunchy spicy tuna are our favorites. And the mochi ice cream at the end is the best part of our day. We went today for my husband’s birthday and we were not disappointed. Our meal consisted of tea, miso soup, edamame, shrimp sashimi, 4 rolls and dessert all for under $ 45. Don’t let the construction or location dissuade you from going! You will not be sorry you made the trip.

At first I typed in the wrong name for this restaurant n saw only 3.5 stars n was surprised. But no wonder this place is 5 stars, nothing really to add except that if I could add more stars I would. Place is awesome.

I’ve come here twice now with co-workers, and we’re so happy to have a good sushi place nearby! The online menu is not totally up to date so when you stop in, just make sure you take a menu to go. Also, you cannot order online(anymore). Calling in is convenient. I think the person I’ve talked to on the phone both times was the owner. She is very kind and makes sure to repeat your order to make sure she’s gotten everything. The prices are reasonable and the quality is worth returning for. Right now, the restaurant literally looks like a hole in the wall from the outside because of construction around it. It’s also a little difficult to spot because the name is not on the window. Even if it was, it would not be called Takei Sushi. It’s now called Bamboo Sushi. The first time we ordered, we were given complimentary mochi. The second time, we were given complimentary edamame and V. Special Roll(specialty roll). We were more than pleased and will definitely be returning many times.

We love this place! It’s family owned and the owners are what makes this place amazing! The sushi is fresh and delicious. They have lots of creative rolls with fruit which my wife loves. I’m a fan of their chef salad and their Alaska & crunchy spicy tuna roll. Great service, fresh sushi and affordable prices! A winning combo!

As other reviewers have mentioned, the location of this place is not the best but don’t let that discourage you! I live in NY but have a girlfriend in the area and after trying SEVERAL sushi places and being convinced that nothing in this area had anything to offer at a reasonable price tag I finally stumbled upon Takei. The sushi is fresh and tastes delicious. They have several creative rolls(I recommend the sunflower roll) although if you’re looking for 100 different rolls this is not the place. The place itself does not give off the wave of pretentiousness that most sushi places do these days, which is always welcome. I have not had to wait more than 10 minutes for my food yet(I have only done pick-up) and they always include edamame and miso soup with my orders. this has definitely become my go-to sushi place when I am in the area, I normally don’t review but when I saw how infrequently it was reviewed on here, I had to say something! Also, as a word of warning, this is a SUSHI restaurant. If you are planning on bringing friends who don’t eat sushi, don’t come here. There are very few non-sushi dishes.

This is a small, family-owned sushi spot and they are very pleasant people. I come here 2 – 3 times a month whenever I’m craving my usual cucumber&avocado roll with seaweed salad. The restaurant is very clean and the atmosphere is relaxing. It’s located in a flood zone strip mall that is rundown which is a bummer for the owners, which is maybe why no one really goes here nor do I ever see no more than 1 other customer other than myself in there. But I highly recommend this place and it should be more known. Storm, which is maybe

Family owned business it seems. Really nice people who serve fresh sushi at a great price. They may not make 50 different rolls with silly names, but that’s not sushi anyway. I eat sushi regularly and have probably eaten several times at every sushi bar in northern NJ. This one is my favorite. Affordable, quiet, not pretentious, just GOOD fresh sushi.

Takei Sushi has the freshest, most delicious combination sushi I have ever tasted. I have never been disappointed in them. They have consistently served the best quality sushi. The owners are friendly. They just re-opened on February 10, 2012 after being out of commission for 5.5 months because of hurricane Irene.

This is the best Sushi in North NJ bar none! Very innovative rolls. Fresh tasting and high quality ingredients. Try the Spicy Chirashi, a green salad with fruit, veggies and a mixture of high quality sushi. Congrats on re-opening after hurricane Irine! Keep up the good work! The sushi-come-lately that moved in next door isn’t even in your league(Mr. Sushi).
