Specialties

You may not have heard of Johnson Art Studio (JAS), but if

you live, work or play in Santa Cruz County, chances are you’ve

seen the elegant handcrafted lighting of owner and designer Roy Johnson. His curved leaf sconces grace the dining room of Soif Wine Bar, while his Asianinfluenced lanterns greet patrons at the entrance of Shogun Japanese Restaurant. From the Pacific Trading Co. to Paradise Beach Grill, Johnson’s Craftsman inspired fixtures beautifully

illuminate countless Santa Cruz homes and businesses.

History

Established in 1973.

Johnson Art Studio has been producing lighting fixtures, lamps and related objects for thirty-two years.

Designer Roy Johnson received his Bachelor of Science degree in industrial arts.

His love of design and process has helped him build a business employing fifteen people in Santa Cruz, CA.

He is not only the designer, but an active part of the daily production team.

Roy’s style and love of design emphasizes clear simple lines, are decorative but always functional, and have the look and feel of being hand made.

Using a combination of vintage and state of the art machinery, we completely build everything we sell including bending, fusing, and sandblasting our own glass; fabricating sheet metal; forging iron; casting metal, and working with wood.

We sell to a wide range of customers, giving special consideration to professionals in the trade doing both small and large projects.

Meet the Business Owner

Roy J.

Business Owner

A tinkerer at heart, Johnson grew up playing in his father’s Michigan workshop, experimenting with machinery and tools. As an industrial arts major at Eastern Michigan University, he enjoyed designing «the old fashioned way» on a drafting table, before the advent of computerized

design tools. Drawn to Santa Cruz in 1980 for its flourishing arts community and exceptional weather, Johnson slowly grew his business from a home-based enterprise focused on stained

glass to a thriving industry.
