History
Established in 1986.
Hospice of Jefferson County, Inc. was founded in 1986 by a group of concerned professionals and community members who saw a need in the region for an organization that could provide not only in-home medical care for the terminally ill, but one which could also provide bereavement and follow-up care for the patients’ families. Furthermore, the group believed that these services should be provided without cost to the patient. Hospice’s first office was located in a room at the New York Air Brake building and housed a staff of less than ten. Hospice later relocated to 714 Washington Street, and finally, in 1994 settled in it’s present location, 425 Washington Street, Watertown. Today hospice consists of a staff of 27 nurses, social workers and bereavement counselors, and a large group of volunteers. Over the years Hospice has cared for more than 4,000 patients and families in Jefferson and Southern St. Lawrence Counties.
