History

Established in 1993.

Utopia established itself as a cornerstone of the U Street renaissance 15 years ago and has steadfastly maintained its influence on the neighborhood.

An exciting colorful and offbeat dining and drinking establishment, Utopia is the epitome of artistic and culinary flare. With its New York/SoHo-style exotic décor, featuring high ceilings, rich colors, exciting art, live jazz and fabulous staff, the restaurant provides a sensual feast for the eyes, ears and taste buds. The eclectic international menu features a range of specialties from a Creole gumbo and Cajun jambalaya, to a Moroccan seasoned lamb couscous and Jamal’s cumin chicken.

Utopia’s walls are filled with art and books. Over the long mahogany bar art by owner Jamal Sahri brightens the walls and the back room gallery features works by other local artists.

Come and excite your senses with a Utopian experience

Meet the Business Owner

Jamal S.

Business Owner

Jamal Sahri was born in Casablanca in 1963, the youngest son in a family of restaurateurs. After studying art at the Casablanca School of Art, Jamal moved to the United States in 1984 and took up residency in Washington DC. While working as a waiter to support his artistic endeavors, Jamal dreamt of ways to combine his two passions, art and restaurants.

In 1993 Jamal made his dream a reality and Utopia was born. An inviting locale where artists and art patrons could come together in the spirit of creativity, enjoy fabulous food, sparkling conversation, lively music and of course, art.

At Utopia Jamal features both his time honored classics and his latest series «Colors of Morocco». A highly sensual painter, you can see the intense inspiration of Matisse and Picasso in Jamal’s work. Jamal views his art as an expression of self, and always holds true to his belief that everyone is an artist.
