U-Store Self Storage

It’s kind of weird to write a review about a self-​storage place — it seems so straightforward. Show up, put your stuff in a locker, carry on your merry way. But U-​Store really stands out. I’ve had a space there for almost three years. I had to rent storage space because of a really upsetting and stressful situation. I was kind of a spazz emotionally and mentally. The staff could not have been more helpful and straight-​up *kind*. I know — not exactly the place you’d expect to find wonderful, salt-​of-​the earth folks, but there ya go. Janice gave me a bottle of water, and a warm and genuine pep talk that I really needed at that moment.
They gave me a fantastic deal when I realized I needed a bigger space than I’d anticipated. Janice walked me through the whole process patiently and with no BS, no pressure, no hard sell.
Over the years they’ve been *excellent* to deal with. When my credit card number changed and my automatic payment didn’t go through, I inadvertently missed a month of rent. They could have penalized me heavily — it’s in the contract. I explained the situation to them and they were completely understanding and waived the fee.
I just went back to the storage locker today for the first time in almost three years. John was super helpful; I’d lost my key to the lock and he and Donnie charged me a very reasonable fee to get the lock off and give me a new one. No hassle whatsoever. Oh, and another bottle of water! When I opened my locker, what blew me away was that my stuff was *totally* clean. I’d been expecting to find a layer of dust — c’mon, three years! Nope. My stuff looked like it could have been put there yesterday!!! The whole facility is totally clean. Doilies to help you navigate, big elevators, clean space.
If everywhere had this level of customer service and were run this well, the world would be a magical place.

Overall my experience with U-​store was good. When we first arrived, someone from U-​Store showed us to our unit, so we didn’t have to try to find it ourselves. I felt that U-​Store was safe because you have to enter a code to get in and out of the gate and the gate is only open from 7am-​7pm. The one issue we did have was that the elevator was broken sometimes. In one case both elevators were broken so we have to carry furniture and other items down the stairs. I spoke with Janice about this and she compensated us for the inconvenience.

The staff is awesome! I had to store some furniture and other assorted belongings for a couple of months during an apartment hunt. When I called in, Janice gave me a couple of quotes but suggested a little bit more space than I needed because there was a deal on it. When I went to the site, the man who showed me around did the same (shoot, forget his name), and made sure I didn’t leave without a free bottle of water, either. I thought everything was pretty clean, if not super high-​tech. There are a couple of dollies and elevators, and a code to get both in the elevator and in the parking lot. Each unit has to be locked with a padlock that you have to provide. The walls of the units don’t reach to the top of the ceiling, at least that I saw.
Eventually I found an apartment and didn’t need the storage space anymore, so I went to collect my stuff. I hadn’t given the right amount of notice to close the unit so was perfectly wiling to pay the next month, but Janice waived it without my asking. The staff just seems all-​around good-​natured and helpful. If I’m ever in need of storage in DC again, I know where I’m going.

We have used U-​Store for years and have had a great experience. The customer service is top notch, the monthly billing is easy and the unit itself was easy to access, clean and secure. Parking is always ample and the prices are competitive. I would highly recommend this storage to anyone.

My husband and I needed a quick short term storage unit close to our home; after researching what was available, we chose this place, site unseen, for the convenience and the cost. BEST DECISION EVER! The staff were delightful, efficient and helpful and the units clean and well maintained. While we would have like a little later access, the rest of the benefits were enough to make us keep the unit until we no longer had use for it. But, we’ll go back again should the need arise, and recommend it to our friends. The unit reduced the inevitable stress of any move and made our lives so much easier. Thank you!

I would like to repost a message or two on here because it’s the same. The staff and their professional and friendly demeanor made a stressful situation very positive. Reggie and Janis and the other lovely gentleman in that office whose name escapes me are worthy of every great review including this one. Look no further for this type of service.

Worst experience of my life. I stored my stuff in one of the units for the last month. I was moving this weekend and so I went to the unit and started taking out my stuff. Everything in the unit was infested with giant roaches. I had to throw away a $ 200 rug, my box spring. They got into all of the boxes that had clothes in them. I spent $ 200 getting everything washed because I took all of mine and my girlfriend’s clothes straight to the laundromat. We did not store any items (like food) that would attract roaches. I also saw roaches and other bugs going in and out of the other units nearby.

The service at this facility was excellent… It was 5 minutes away from Howard University which made it very convenient for us to get to. The prices are reasonable. The staff are excellent and we will definitely use this facility next summer.

I absolutely love this place! I’ve stored with them each time I go on summer break for college in May and everything is in order when I come to collect in August. Excellent service within the office, clean units, and no fear of anything happening to my items while I’m away. Janice is an absolute joy and will work with you to get the best deal and unit for your money.

I can’t say enough to describe the excellent service and professional customer service I consistently received. I had one large unit for 8 months and needed an additional unit for 30 days. Janice provided another perfect sized clean unit. While unloading in 90 degree weather, without asking, she came out with ice cold bottle water and paper towels. This is what customer service use to be and is all about! She was an absolute pleasure to work with and made my stressful relocation so easy. Thank you Thank You!

We have been going through an office move which has been stressful on all counts. When looking for storage, I had encountered many not so helpful storage companies when speaking to them over the phone. Janice at U-​Stor on New York Avenue was not only personable on the phone but in person I found her to be kind, helpful, and therapeutic! (Actually helped me de-​stress by offering me a cup of tea and telling me to breathe). It was a refreshing customer service experience. Reggie was also very helpful, friendly, and showed much patience while showing us around to different sizes of storage units so we could get an idea for our needs. Never once did I feel rushed and he was very helpful in navigating through their property.
They have just received a lifelong loyal customer! I highly recommend this company for storage with great customer service.

I have never written a Unilocal review but this is deserving of one. A storage unit is a storage unit, there is nothing special about it. What makes this place is the staff. Janice is the most professional, accomdation, and hospitable person I have EVER worked with. I own my own catering company and would hire her if I could. U-​Storage management — I highly consider Janice for promotion.

I had to downsize from a big house to small apartment and used two large unit there to store stuff. I retained one unit for well over a year. My experience was excellent. My stuff was dry and clean. I never had problem getting access. I did forget the code a couple of times and they kindly reminded me.
There’s a staff person there named Janis who is a real class act. Somehow she remembered my name and helped me coordinate. In a world of staff people who seem upset giving any customer service this employee stood out to me.

I was promptly contacted regarding the dust, etc., which is a testament to their awesome customer service. Also, they said they will be upping their fumigations from 2 to 3 times a week. As I said I’ve been there 2 years, which was before they renovated & the dust is probably from the construction efforts (I moved to a new unit also underground just before writing my first review, and it was totally clean). I am pleased.

Janice, the manager at U-​Store is phenomenal! She goes well beyond her duties to ensure customer satisfaction and security. U-​store was able to get me a small storage space the day of my move. Janice was kind enough to stay a bit later (with manager approval). She was also able to help me further secure my items later on. Also, it is a great option for Gally students bc it is just a couple of streets down.
The only down side is that you have to be very aware of the dates that you need to pay bc late fees do add up (as do other storage facilities).
I will definetly use U-​Store in the future.

As a life long hoarder, I’ve had a lot of experience with storage spaces. I have used a number of the fashionable new Portable Storage Boxes, having moved several times in the last few years– California, Georgia, now D.C. I came to U-​Store after doing research and finding their prices the best available and the location was central to my needs (if only the traffic on New York Avenue wasn’t such a drag…)
They couldn’t be easier to work with. Want a space? They’ve got plenty. Figure out you need a bigger size? No problem, just move it over. They pro-​rate partial months fairly and without having to ask, they have an auto-​pay option for rental, long hours of availability (even stayed open as the hurricane was looming) and each one of the staff seems to try to be more helpful than the last.

I rented a unit at U-​Store at a friend’s suggestion, and I could not be happier with the experience and customer service. I moved to New York for a new job and needed a place to store my furniture, decorations, and seasonal clothing for about two months. It was simple to rent the unit, and the elevators made it easy to load my furniture into it. Making monthly payments was easy to do online, and when I called to make a second payment, the staff was friendly and efficient.
When it came time to vacate the unit, I called to let the staff know. They made the change to my account immediately and let me know how crowded they expected the site to be on my moving day.
I rented a truck through Budget online to pick up onsite at U-​Store. They only have a few trucks, but Budget allows people to make reservations online even after a third-​party distributor is sold out. U-​Store staff called me to tell me that their trucks were overbooked for my moving day so that I would know to get there early. (If Budget has overbooked customers for their site, customers must go to another local Budget site to pick up a truck.)
The whole experience was very pleasant and easy to arrange. I had to buy my own lock, but my belongings were safe, and I felt confident about that because of the key codes required to get into the fence and then into the facility. Nothing seems to have been damaged by mice or heat, and I haven’t noticed an issue with mold or anything of that sort yet in unpacking. The location on New York Avenue is convenient to I-​95, too, if you’re planning to drive a big moving truck for a long distance (not having to go back on DC local roads was a pro.)
I enjoyed working with U-​Store and would choose them again in a snap. Before reserving a spot, you should make sure their access hours work for you (I believe they close at 7pm), and if you’re booking a truck there, you should make sure that Budget hasn’t overbooked them.

I needed to rent a truck for a recent move out of DC. I reserved a 10′ truck online through the Budget Rental Car website and selected U-​Store as my pickup location. When I arrived, the staff casually said that «I was lucky» because someone else was supposed to come by and pick up my truck that morning. They were totally ready to leave me hanging. I had also reserved a hand truck and they didn’t have any on site, despite my reservation.
