The Watergate Hotel

I had the privilege of staying in one of the penthouse suites just before the hotel was sold. Talk about being surrounded in a shroud of history… it was amazing! Even in it’s advancing age, the Watergate was still one of the finest hotels I have ever stayed in anywhere in the world. The service was impeccable. Dining within the hotel was excellent. The little Safeway across the interior parking lot was both convenient and quirky, along with the little mom and pop bakery with buttery pastry’s available for the drive into interior DC meetings.
The Watergate was truly a mark of excellence in the DC cityscape.

Nice uppety yuppety residence that I’ll never be able to afford but a pain in the ass to access. Delivered here a few times and circled the damn place ten times or more each time before saying FI and just jerking the brake in front. Kind of a little town in itself with a small Safeway and little boutiques. Right next to Kennedy Place so convenient for the artsy farsty types. Don’t get near the Capitol in a rental truck or you will be treated as Timothy Mcwhats his name. Especially if you come around twice. Oops. My mistake!

K, so the exterior looks like any old cement box and the location isn’t the greatest if you are a tourist traveling without a car, but I stayed here right after my journalism teacher showed our class «All the President’s Men» and I cannot help it, I thought it was the greatest that I got to stay here and I still think it’s pretty nifty knowing how into journalism I was.
When we stayed there the hotel was in some industry standard book of the best hotels in the world that I studied like a fiend when I’d help out my dad at his travel agency, and while I had no complaints with our room, which was really spacious and had a beautiful view, it didn’t blow the mind of this high schooler, so I guess it’s about time they started renovations. Still, the hotel was in no way bad or even middle of the road, just in need of some modernizing.
The history of the place will be interesting forever, but that doesn’t mean I want to stay in rooms that haven’t been touched since Nixon left office.

I am very glad to hear it’s closed for renovations, but sadly I think the hideous exterior will remain unchanged. Obviously the Watergate has it’s notoriety, which is cool, except it’s still a heinous piece of architecture. Pity.

my mother and i stayed here a few times. it’s decent for the area but certainly not spectacular. the service is awful.

I loved this place… and not only cause I took all the letterhead I could find either…
The staff was nice to a fault,
The shower was great… black marble with a nice built in bench and an adjustable showerhead… settings from jet propulsion to tinkling brook.
The only fault I found was with the cleaning… someone else’s hair in the bathtub… even after the second day of housekeeping…
I just hope they don’t get rid of the showers when they renovate…

Ever since they shut down the pool at my building, I’ve been scheming to go sneak in and use one of the fancypants Watergate pools. I even printed out a satellite map on Google to figure out the best way to the pool. My plan was to try and blend in and act like I belong there, but the pools are ALWAYS empty! Also, all the people staying there seem to be the over-​60 crowd, so even if there were people in the pool, I wouldn’t blend in.

It’s all about the name, the infamous scandal behind it, and the picturesque view by the Potomac River.
Its decors are characterized by antique style furniture and replicas of oil paintings.
However, all the great things about this hotel seem to stop here. The facilities look a bit old: the shower knob is so tight that I spent almost a minute to turn off the water. My room key stopped working so that I had to go to the frontdesk to have it re-​magnetized twice and it still didn’t work. The guy at the frontdesk had to use his master key to open my room. What a story!
