History

Established in 2002.

The Corner Store opened in 1870 as a neighborhood market, with a home attached for the family running the shop. As such, it served the neighborhood until 1968 when a botched robbery resulted in the death of the owner’s son.

For the following 33 years the store was boarded shut until new owners Kris Swanson and Roy Mustelier moved in and began renovation of the derelict corner building in 2001. The store area served initially as a studio for Kris’ public art projects and workshop for her students. One project, the 28 foot mosaic «Yume Tree», was installed in 2003 and is still growing strong with new names tiles added each year. The store was also an art classroom and after school safe house for at-risk youth, a gallery, and venue for local artists and musicians.

The Corner Store Incorporated as a nonprofit art space in 2002 to accommodate the many requests from artists for a place to showcase their talents, and is now a thriving performance art venue.
