The Bakers’ Lounge

Perfect dessert place. Fantastic owner, she makes delicious cake balls and macaroons. Tonight she had St. Party’s day theme macaroons, Irish cream was really good. I’ll be back.

My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our «high tea» baby sprinkle at the Baker’s Lounge. The set-​up was perfect… cozy, simple and elegant. The sandwiches, pastries, and sweet & savory treats were so flavorful and baked to perfection. My favorites were the mini-​cheesecakes, sausage pastries, shrimp salad sandwich, and the melt-​in-​your mouth scones but each person in our group had a different favorite. We had such a splendid time sipping freshly brewed English tea and wine (we brought our own bottles) and savoring our treats that we lost track of time but Catherine (the owner) was very accommodating and made us feel right at home. The honoree/​mom-​to-​be was so impressed with the experience that she was trying to set up a future gathering at the Bakers Lounge before the baby comes. This place may easily become my newest addiction which can’t be great for my waistline.
The Baker’s Lounge is a lovely addition to Brookland and I would highly recommend stopping in for a delicious treat, hosting an event there or use their catering (Catherine bakes whole cakes, cupcakes, etc).

This is a must go to bakery! I called 2 days before I needed a specialty baked cake, I knew it was last minute so I Expected to be turned away. But the owner made it happen! The day the order was ready I was in a panic because I was hosting an event that would soon be starting and trying to find a moment to leave and pick up the cake. The owner knew of my distress and offered to drop the cake off to me. I was completely shocked and so surprised at her generosity. When she dropped the cake off to me I was so amazed at how stunning it was! And not only was it gorgeous it was extremely tasty as well. I strongly recommend this bakery. The orders are done quickly and beautifully. I will definitely be recommending this bakery to anyone I know, looking for a special treat.

Its a Sunday night and all of a sudden a sweet craving overcame my BF and I so we searched for a spot that was local. Plus, we like to support small businesses.
Even though the website says they are open on Sundays, they really aren’t. But, we lucked out because they had an event earlier in the day and was gracious to unlock the doors when they saw our sad faces… lol.
The place is bright and airy. Very nice and modern for a bakery.
They were packing up for the night and didn’t have a huge selection so we took one of each cupcake — caramel, vanilla caramel and chocolate mint. The cupcakes seemed on the small side to me for $ 3.50 each. The Vanilla Caramel was a little dense and dry to me but had good flavor. The cupcakes also seemed to be a ⁵⁰⁄₅₀ ratio of cake to icing which I didn’t like because it makes it overly sweet. I’m not a huge icing person so please take that into consideration.
The service was great. The place looked great. Its just that the product wasn’t as memorable to me and my cupcake standard is pretty high. I can see myself stopping by again if I had a sweet craving and didn’t feel like driving across town!

The sponge cake with raspberry preservatives and cream in the middle is yummy!!! The cake balls were just ok. I haven’t had anything else… yet. Oh, but I will! The owner was very pleasant.

While I may not be a skilled baker myself, I have been fortunate enough to be good friends with a professional pastry chef for many years. I mention this only because I set the bar very high when it comes to my baked goods and desserts, and as a result, I am often disappointed. Not at the Baker’s Lounge! I was not just pleasantly surprised, I was genuinely blown away by how good these cakes are. My personal fave is the mini Victoria sponge (it tastes just like my granny’s!), but everything is good. And the owner is lovely — I think she also does full-​sized cakes to order, so I may have to find a reason to celebrate soon!
Edited to add: I suggest getting a selection of cupcakes and bringing them to a dinner with friends — that’s what I’m doing tomorrow night and I can’t wait for my friends to try them!

Very cute little bakery. The owner was EXTREMELY friendly and the plans that she has for the location sound like this will be a winner (wifi, high tea, coffee, loungey, etc). Sits right on the corner of 12^th & Evarts (it’s easy to miss since I passed it several times this week and didn’t even notice). I tried the Apple Sultana Tart, Bakewell Tart, and salted caramel cupcake. A little pricey (total for the 3 was ~$ 14, after 10% off) but all were moist and tasty. I’d definitely recommend to others and I’d be interested in tasting her cakes.

The other day one of my co-​workers was lamenting the travails of planning for another co-worker’s birthday, as she is unable to eat gluten (like, the real kind of not being able to eat gluten, the kind where your body will mutiny if you do – think Celiac disease, not 2015 trend) and it has been difficult to find well-​made cupcakes in the city that also happen to be free of gluten. During this conversation, my colleague just very casually mentioned «the bakery on 12^th Street» and then continued on with the rest of her sentence, as if that were an okay thing to do, and hold up, wait, stop. I waved my hands around and said, «Wait, wait, wait… There’s a bakery on 12^th Street?»
So naturally, the Bakers Lounge played a notable role in my next day off, because I, too, have been searching for local cupcakes that are comparable to Georgetown Cupcake in the yum factor but more — let’s say — accessible? than Georgetown Cupcake. Early afternoon on Saturday I walked in to this chipper little place on the corner of 12^th and Evarts, and I was immediately greeted by the owner. She tended to all of my annoying questions and requests very patiently and cheerfully. I ended up getting three cupcakes (coconut with buttercream frosting, vanilla with chocolate frosting, and the salted caramel one that a few other folks on here have mentioned), as well as a miniature sponge cake and a lemon bar. They were all divine. I think that the sponge cake was my ultimate favorite, although the coconut cupcake was a close runner-​up. They were all so moist and flavorful without being overpoweringly sweet. Subtle and perfect.
The owner mentioned to me that she was sorry that she was unable to accommodate my colleagues’ request for the custom-​made gluten-​free cupcakes, but that she had only very recently been successful at making a gluten-​free cupcake that she was finally satisfied with, and it just so happened to be vanilla (my co-​worker very specifically wanted chocolate, apparently). She explained that she did not feel comfortable yet in marketing new flavors, lest they not be perfect or up to par to our expectations. I understand, as I am sure that there’s a very fine line with the nuances of how to make a good gluten-​free cupcake — certainly not something that I could accomplish! She was so nice about it, and it was very evident that she cares a lot about the quality of her desserts and her customers’ satisfaction first and foremost.
It was ultimately a delicious, wonderful experience. I was almost tempted to go back today to get another sponge cake, among some other baked treats, but I didn’t want her to think I was a weirdo for coming in two days in a row. Maybe I’ll go tomorrow and say that my half-​dozen purchased desserts are «um, for a friend.» Definitely not for me to eat alone in my apartment.

It’s Friday and I decided that seemed like a good reason to treat myself! Reading the reviews for The Bakers Lounge, I knew I had to try it. I am so glad I did!
The space is bright and airy, with tables and chairs for folks to enjoy their desserts together, and a lovely set of armchairs for relaxing near a bay window facing the street. The display case was a feast for the eyes! Catherine’s desserts are beautiful and tantalize the tastebuds.
I liked, first of all, that they were of a reasonable size. Not too small, but not gargantuan, either. I ended up taking a few things home, and I felt like I could do that without finding myself in possession of enough sweets to feed an army. The Bakers Lounge hits a nice «sweet spot» between too-​small and unappetizingly big. The portions are just right.
When I got home, the moment of truth: how do they taste? Well, true to a bakery that has a more European flair, they were pleasantly sweet without being cloying. I enjoyed a mini-​sized apple caramel cupcake (dense and moist with baked apple… sooo good!) and a more standard-​sized salted caramel cupcake.
The salted caramel cupcake had a lighter cake base with a tender crumb. Both were sweet and indulgent and delicious without that too-​familiar toothache I’ve come to associate with a lot of other bakery cupcakes. Both desserts were clearly made with fresh, real ingredients. The taste of real, high quality butter was unmistakable in particular.
The flavors were balanced, with nothing overpowering. This was especially notable with the salted caramel cupcake, which was salty-​sweet in the way a good chocolate chip cookie is. The salt was complimentary to the other flavors and didn’t overwhelm them.
I bought a blueberry frangipane as well, but I won’t get to that until breakfast tomorrow. I’m looking forward to it, that’s for sure!

Grabbed a few cupcakes and a pineapple upside down cake on a Friday night. Although the space isn’t quite finished yet (awaiting seating), the cakes were wonderful. They tasted like homemade. Not like a cupcake from a «cupcake place», like Georgetown Cupcake, but like something that a friend who is an amazing baker brought you from their own kitchen. Moist, with excellent icing. Will definitely be going back regularly!

Excellent gluten free desserts. I had a delicious banana flavored dessert and my friend had a tasty cupcake. We talked to the owner for awhile and she is planning on hosting high tea during the fall. I think this place will be a great stop after pizza at Menomale. Highly recommended!
