Sleepy’s

After purchasing a mattress at their Labor Day «50% off everything sale» I found that the same mattress was available online for almost $ 300 cheaper (even after ‘extra discounts’ the salesperson gave me at the store!!). It turns out the sale is 50% off the «list price» which is just a fictional number they never sell any of their products at. But luckily, they have a 20% price beat guarantee, right? So maybe the price difference might be a good thing?
I took my receipt back in to have them honor their 20% price beat guarantee, and the employee was incredibly rude and unhelpful from the get-​go, immediately denying the request, even though we had printouts of their ‘competitor’s’ price from 1−800-Mattress. We asked to speak with his manager and he refused to let us, even though he was speaking with the manager by phone himself. When we persisted to ask why they couldn’t honor a simple guarantee he then asked his manager to CALL THE POLICE ON US, as if we were being hostile. At the time we were seated in chairs opposite him and talking in a low, yet frustrated voice– hardly a threat. After we left the store, he came out himself and blew cigarette smoke in our faces while he continued his unapologetic tone, asking us why we «wanted to steal money from his store». Then, oddly, he said to come back in an hour and he would sort it all out.
In the meantime I spoke with a representative from corporate who said an internet printout would not suffice, so I actually BOUGHT another mattress from another ‘competitor’, Mattress Discounters, at a price $ 250 cheaper than the so-​called sale price at Sleepy’s. Using that sales invoice, he suggested I try the store again and then fax it in to corporate as well.
I returned to U-​Street Sleepy’s, where the same rude manager was the same again: rude. He called his manager again and this time let me speak with him. His manager said only a regional manager could make the price beat adjustment. When we hung up, the store employee said that WAS his regional manager.
All things considered, I find the entire mattress industry to be a big shell game. The model numbers at one store don’t match those at true competitors, so there is no basis for true comparison shopping. The only reason the model numbers matched between Sleepy’s, 1−800-Mattress and Mattress Discounters is because they aren’t even competitors… they are all OWNED BY THE SAME COMPANY (look it up in Wikipedia). The real shame of it all is that we love the mattress… if they just weren’t so shady about the whole thing and just lived up to their word, it would have been a very rewarding experience. I am just so turned off by the amazing lack of ethics and transparency in this company, from the bottom all the way up, that I couldn’t help but tell the story.

Like another reviewer mentioned, I showed up around 4:30PM on a Monday and the store was mysteriously closed. I had made plans to meet my fiancé there, so after trying both doors a couple times, I stood near the entrance for a few minutes waiting for him to show up. A guy pulled up to the front of the store, yelling at me that he works there, he was «on lunch», and he’ll be back to let me in in a minute. Ok…
The salesman was pretty knowledgeable, but was very intent on getting us to buy a super expensive Tempurpedic mattress. He was willing to throw in all sorts of extras at «no cost» in order to get us to buy it. Luckily, we decided to sleep on it (no pun intended) and to do some research. We found a few unbiased mattress rating sites that showed that not only was he charging us a ton for our supposed «deal,» but that there were tons of other memory foam mattresses with better consumer ratings at a fraction of the price of a Tempurpedic. The experience itself wasn’t terrible — he let us lay on all the beds and gave us his opinion on each one — but I suspect those opinions were heavily influenced by his commission on each of those mattresses.

Tony was incredible! The whole process is very expedient, he helped us choose the best mattress for what we need, and we walked out with a queen set for $ 380.
Overall: very, very satisfied

One of their clerks, Renee lied to me about the return policy on two pillow, in order to up-​sell me into a more expensive brand. When I attempted to return them, the clerk refused to honor her statement. He suggested I return the next day when she was working. I did. She quickly asked me to leave. When I said I preferred to wait until she was done with her current customers to see what we could work out, she called the police. When they arrived to kick me out, they even agreed she was being unreasonable.
