Mix 107.3 FM – WRQX

I have been listening to WRQX since the 80’s. My «switch» in stations doesn’t really count. All I did was listen long enough for the promos to be moved from Q107 to 107.3FM. I enjoy the music, the contests and the station events. The foundation of what works at the station helps when the radio personalities are kind and funny. I liked Jack Diamond. I have had fun hanging out with Sarah, Ty & Mel. When I travel, I appreciate being able to listen on line.

The Jack Diamond Morning Show was the ONLY reason I listened to MIX 107.3 for several years (the music is top-​40 tripe IMO). Cumulus management’s sleight-​of-​hand replacement of JD with Bert Weiss was unfair to the station’s throngs of loyal listeners. Mostly, I’m indignant that Cumulus apparently considers its mainly 30– to 40-​something female demographic undesirable – I guess they think established, professional, employed women don’t bring in the ad revenue…
From what I’ve heard, The Bert Show is just a (slightly) cleaned-​up version of Eliot in the Morning. At best, it’s like white noise. Or like an annoying insect buzzing in the background. In any case, there are lots better station choices that I’ll be checking out in the coming days.

This station used to be a lot better than it is now. The «mix» in their name seems to be broken these days. I can usually time my commute to certain songs they play, because they play at roughly the same time each day. My wife noticed the same thing on her commute home and thought she was crazy until I pointed out that it happens in the mornings too.
On top of that the long-​running Jack Diamond Morning Show has been cancelled, despite everyone I know enjoying it. I don’t know how the replacement show is going to be yet, but having Diamond cut off without having a proper goodbye is a slap in the face to a local DC fixture.
I don’t know what’s going on at WRQX these days, but it ain’t good.

Hi! It used to be they played both new and old hits. Now, there’s just the new stuff. There’s a Baltimore station at 102.7 that has a lot more variety. That’s a real mix station. We need a station that in the DC area.

Free-​For-​All Friday happens every Friday at the MIX 107.3 radio station. The station welcomes a live in-​studio audience (this could be you!) of about 10 – 12 people to laugh and cheer enthusiastically and banter a bit with the hosts of the Jack Diamond Morning Show, who obviously include Jack Diamond, a bit of D.C. radio legend. Bonus, there’s almost always a segment with a comedian headlining at DC Improv that weekend, so you’ll more than likely get to shmooze with a famous comedian and laugh at his jokes in person. Most of the experience involves sitting in folding chairs, eating free food, yukking it up with the radio hosts, and maybe getting your name pulled to take a seat around the radio desk as a contestant in an entertaining, un-​lose-​able game for tickets to some local show. It’s a good time and a fun D.C. experience you should take advantage of at least once, and if you’re STILL not convinced, listen up: my husband and I sold various free tickets we got in our goody bags for several hundred dollars on Craigslist within a couple days. And we still have the tickets to the concerts and events we actually want to attend. Awesome!
Free-​For-​All Friday goes from about 5 a.m. — 9 a.m., so prepare to drink a lot of coffee. If you’re interested, listen in the wee hours during the week to call in (1−800−727−1073) for the chance to be a member of the FFA audience… or just call whenever and ask really nicely.

Just when I think things can’t get any worse, Mambo No. 5 starts playing on the radio.

They play too much Coldplay– especially VIVA LA VIDA. I HATE THAT SONG! The only thing that they play that is good is Paparazzi.

I still can’t fathom why the radio stations in the DC area are so terrible! This station… I’m not sure why they call it MIX because they play the same songs day after day, hour after hour. I started listening during the day while at work and some days purposely do not turn the radio on until 10:00 when the Jack Diamond Morning Show is over. I find his voice to be down right irritating and they never play enough music in the morning (although they would just be the same songs that are repeated throughout the day). Also, the sign-​off skit that they play every morning after signing off just gets under my skin in the worst way.
The only reason I keep listening is because it’s one of 2 stations that come in through my radio at work. I really hope they change up the variety though!

Like others — I wake up to Jake Diamond Morning show blaring from the clock radio. It gets me at least moving in the morning and most mornings I come away with at least some useless factoid to torture people with that day. Mind you — the information you get from MIX isn’t always factually correct — but it is at least entertaining. And if you email them to correct a fact, they actually email back.
Carson and Chili keep me amused on the commute home and usually chuckling (if not out right rolling). Better than screaming at the irritating tourists and insane drivers who don’t know how to read road signs and insist on cutting you off.
Other than the mornings while I get ready for work, I pretty much only tune to MIX in the car. The traffic reports are decent, the giveaways generous, and the personalities entertaining. Yes — I hate the overplayed tunes and the ads too (particularly the promotional spot with the DJs pimping something) but hey, its free radio and the bills got to be paid somehow. Annoyed, yes at times — but that is what CDs are for.

I’ll admit it. Sometimes I listen to John Mayer and Jack Johnson: two people who really epitomize the opposite of «rock» or «hardcore».
Mix 107.3 plays these artists. And many, many others who epitomize these same ideals, the least common denominator.
That said, there is one high point, and his name is Carson. If you’re bored at work, listen. You will be amazed. No, not in a good way, it’s just amazingly lame. Check out his blog and you’ll get it.
My coworker and I used to listen regularly, eagerly waiting for his question of the day, when he asks listeners to call in and tell their opinion on something stupid like «What do you have a tattoo of?» or «Favorite pizza topping». OK, I made that one up but it could be one. Then old people or bored people call in and say things like «A rose» or «pepporoni» or «babies».
Speaking of babies… they incessantly play these bizarre fertility clinic ads.
I think the station as a whole is a lot like the website: a whole lot of «stuff» but nothing with substance. Do yourself a favor. Create a pandora station… or put in a CD.

I, just like Ina K. wake up to the Jack Diamond Morning Show. My problem of getting out of bed though is that my comforter is so darn cozy! But, I do listen to his show all the way until I get to my school’s parking lot.
That aside, this station in general is REALLY generous with their giveaways. I don’t know of any station that gives away more! How’d you like $ 1000 just for having the initials K.L. Maybe I’m not that hip, but I like the mix of music they play. Carson in the afternoon cracks me up on my way home from work. Chilli too. I’m a fan.

I have «mixed» feelings about you, Jack Diamond. My alarm goes off at 6am but sometimes I can’t get out of bed to tear myself away from the radio until…(gulp) a whole hour later. You make me late for work! You, with your interesting Top 5 lists, totally legitimate opinions of American Idol (oh, Josiah!), merciless ripping on Tommy… What’s a girl to do?
I’ve been listening to you since I learned how to use my radio alarm clock and, thanks to you, have become familiar with the tunes of bands beyond my time. Thanks for really playing a good mix of all kinds of music…
