Martha’s Table

The selection is not huge, but somehow I walked out with 10 CDs, 5 blazers, a whole set of dishes, and a large basket. Oh, and a belt. So we did a’ight. Easy and super cheap pricing (repeat after me: consignment stores are the devil). Nice staff. No dressing rooms that I saw.

Pros:
Convenient location right by U St
Everything is cheap! Dresses, shirts, pants are all just under $ 4, and I don’t think I saw anything over $ 10
Racks are well organized and not too crowded
Staff are nice
Cons:
Pretty small selection
Items not always in great shape — stains on some of the clothes and I picked up a champagne flute only to put it down when I realized there was a chip on the bottom
No dressing room just a mirror in the back but they do have a limited return/​exchange policy for clothes
I’d probably only stop in to browse if I happened to be nearby and would focus more on their dishes etc than their clothes. There’s way better clothing thrift around there though I do like supporting Martha’s table.

I don’t care much for D.C. I feel like Goldilocks when I’m there. It’s either too cold or too hot (except those few months when it’s just right). I don’t have the patience for that. I also think that the people are hella rude (residence, servers, bus drivers, cops, tourists, etc). With that said, one of my favorite places there is Martha’s Table.
This is a place to shop where you don’t have to feel unethical. The shop isn’t huge, but everything is laid out quite well. They have really good selections for a thrift shop.
I got CDs. Like not crap (depending on your music taste, I guess). And it was diverse. Everything from (old school) Genesis to Jurassic 5.
I got blazers. They must have lots of wide shouldered 5’8″ frat boys making mad donations.
I got dishes. A whole set of matching black plates, saucers, and a matching bowl.
I got a basket. Just to carry the dishes on METRO though. No other reason for a basket.
And everything cost what one nice shirt would have cost at Nautica.
And, the people we’re actually quite nice (and hilarious). One little girl there with her mother had her America’s Got Talent chops on display (adorable, and I don’t really like kids that much). One homeless guy told a store worker that he wasn’t an idiot and he had an IQ of 185. One worker ran after us down the street (like a block and a half) because we mistakenly left some of our CDs at the store. That’s customer service.
Go there.

I like the flat prices they have here for items. I have found shirts from Marc Jacobs and Tory Burch for under $ 5 in good condition. It is definitely on the smaller side for a thrift shop and does not have any dressing rooms.

I am in love with this store. The workers are friendly they help you choose what you need. Really cheap items that you could buy 5 items and just pay 5 – 10 dollars. I bought 1 turtle neck, 2 calvin Klein shirts, 1 cardigan and a four pack play-​doh just for $ 10.

This is an amazing place and totally affordable! I’m happy I made the visit. The clothes were organized by price and nothing was over $ 10! I bought a Theory tee shirt for $ 4 and a Polo sweater for $ 2. Everything else I bought was either one or two dollars. If I had more time, I would have got more stuff!

I am updating my review. The store layout changed which has affected the quantity of items the store has. I have been there 3 times since the change and of the last 2 times came out empty handed. The one time I found only 1 item which is crazy because all the other times I’ve been I made out like a bandit. I am not sure why the decision was made to only pull out a handful of item and go with a «boutique» feel but this isn’t working for an avid thrifter. I won’t say I won’t ever go back but will only go back if I’m on that side of town. I am taking Martha’s Table off my «favorites» list for now.

Easily one of my favorite secondhand stores in the District, and even more so for their awesome community mission. Strikes a great balance in selection and price — it’s super cheap and doesn’t require much searching to unearth some treasures.
I’ve found some killer thrift at Martha’s Table — great for blazers and coats especially. The housewares are also lovely; I’ve scored vases, pretty dishes and more there.
PS — Saw in another review that they charge you $ 1 to browse — have been here tons of times and never encountered this policy.

Martha’s Table is a fantastic DC gem. I have yet to find another thrift store like this one in the city. A few reasons why this thrift shop stands out:
1. It’s locally owned community shop with a great philanthropy, dedicated to fulfilling the needs of low-​income and homeless families and individuals.
2. They have very friendly staff and volunteers
3. Martha’s Table feels like a real hole-​in-​the-​wall thrift store with extremely reasonable prices, unlike many outrageously priced consignment shops, and secondhand boutiques in the city. There are set prices for all shirts, sweaters, pants, etc.
4. That said, they have a fantastic mix of brand name items mixed with actual vintage clothing. Sure you may run across a few of last season’s Forever 21 pilled or worn out sundresses, but overall I’ve found some great clothes here.
All in all, you’ll have to dig for good finds, but it’s worth the time if you love thrifting. Highly recommend! Beware there are no fitting rooms. Wear spandex if you need to try things on.

I find the best things here… love this place for second hand items… I also like supporting them as well… Please give to the Martha’s Table.

I am new to DC and needed a new work wardrobe for my new governmenty job. I basically got the job done here for $ 76. Really nice staff in my opinion, a great selection of clothes, and supports a good cause. What’s not to love?

This is a great charity and the thrift shop has some really nice stuff, Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, etc. I only leave off one star because they don’t have dressing rooms (due to stealing I think in the past), but if you know your size really well or don’t mind trying things on over your clothes, the great prices are totally worth the hassle! I got a sweater, dress, H&M top and a Coach clutch all for $ 9 today! And it all goes to a good cause!

I stopped in yesterday after reading the reviews and always hunting for a good deal. I know that from past experience with thrift stores that the items vary daily and it can be hit or miss depending on the day. Today was unfortunately a miss for me, but that’s okay, I will definitely give it another try!
There were other people who were finding items so that’s a good thing. I like the color coding system. I will say, there was that normal thrift store smell, they should think about trying wall flowers or something to help with the smell. Employees seemed nice and I could see the employees on the other side going through donations! I hope they received some good items that I can go through and purchase the next time I stop in!

Decent place to donate and shop. I bought 10 pieces (half were designer) for $ 46.00

I highly recommend volunteering at this establishment.
The staff: Ok, you might come across one or two people that are grumpy but for the most part, the volunteer coordinator is awesome. She is always helpful and is willing to through me on the volunteer schedule whenever possible. I usually do food preparation when I do go, but today was something different.
They offer a van that goes out in the community every day of the week to distribute food to people in need. It was the best feeling I had in a long time. Safety is the number one priority of the staff and they enforce it, not only for you, but for others as well.
Call immediately and schedule some volunteer time. Its great for groups.

The new management has really improved the quality and service. Love it!

Really nice people here and they work really hard. I came here to donate some old clothes and all you need to do is complete a form and they will send you a tax form. Nice and easy.

I shyed away from this place at first. When I moved to DC I was on the hunt for good thrift stores — and as usually, started with Unilocal.Martha’s outfitters didn’t have very good reviews, so I didn’t stop their on my thrifting extravaganza’s. However, after a move and being now a mere 4 blocks from it, curiousity got the best of me, and I went in… and haven’t stopped!
This Thrift Store is great. The people who run it are amazing — incredibly helpful, pleasant, chatty, I could go on and on. The prices are extremely fair. Having both namebrands and good vintage finds — it truly has become my new obsession. They filter in new items very frequently, so if I don’t find something one week, I just check back a bit later, and there are a plethora of new options to go through.
I’ve also started the upcycling trend, whipping out my grandma’s sewing machine handed down to me, and Martha’s has lots of great vintage finds that need just a bit of loving to make it really trendy and upbeat again. You won’t see me at H&M, F21, Banana, etc anymore, but you will see me all smiles grabbing loads of stuff from this store.
So, my suggestion, is to ignore some of the older reviews, as I understand it was under different management, and come and check it out. Weekends are obviously a bit busier, but it’s still very pleasant to be in. One of my favorite thrift spots — and I love knowing that what I spend is helping others in the process. Enjoy your next thrifting stop!

I recently moved to D.C. a week ago. I had been traveling here for over a year and was familiar with a lot of the District’s consignment shops.
Had never heard of Martha’s Table in all that time.
It was a very happy discovery.
And at a crucial time. I ended up in D.C. without access to a lot of my clothes.
I started to shell out $$$ to replace them and quickly became depleted.
On top of all the expenses of the recent move, I simply couldn’t replace tons of clothes full price or even on sale.
The selection at Martha’s Table made me quite happy and the prices made me grin.
Cashmere sweaters in great condition for 4.00? Wow.
I struck up a conversation with the store’s Director Michael and he informed me of all the good the proceeds of sales in the store go to.
I mentioned Unilocal and disclosed to him that I almost didn’t want to share this new found gem with everybody.
But he convinced me that it’s win win.
The more people who know of the store, the more high quality donations they will get.
So go see for yourself. Your wallet will thank you. :)

While I admit that Martha’s Table is a good cause (supporting the homeless and destitute of DC), the women who run the Martha’s Table Outfitters are crude, horrible people.
I used to live in Columbia Heights and would shop there. They at times have amazing finds and offer you Michael Stars or BCBG clothing (at a cost mind you… if they know it’s name brand they’ll jack up the price to $ 20 buck for a GAP used coat). Okay, yay. Stars for them for having rich donors to stock their store.
But EVERY SINGLE TIME I would go there I would hear this women scream at not only the poor patrons coming in but those bringing donations in as well. «This is crap!» that manager would scream after the donors had departed. «There’s no name brand clothing in here» is another common phrase. I’ve even seen her turn down a homeless man who came in with his shelter ticket. He brought the shelter ticket in asking for a coat. The only coat that fit him with some «designer» jacket so the manager wouldn’t give it to him. He had to pick something that was obviously ill-​fitting.
The final straw came when I saw the manager RIP UP a person’s donation sheet b/​c she thought they put down too much money as to its value. What the hell! These people are giving you donations to «help» those in need and you spit in their face? I should report this place to the IRS or DC council so they lose their funding since they clearly must be violating some sort of code of conduct. If not legally at least morally.
There are other organizations that need clothing (St Elizabeth’s house, pregnancy crisis center, little sisters of the poor, etc) who will happily take your items and actually use them for a good cause.
