Went there for dinner with friends and family. The food was good. Place was a good size. It was a bit cold inside but not a bad atmosphere. If your in the area and just want some good spanish food I would give this place a try.

Service was great. Music was too loud. Reminded me of so many Latin spots back home. Revuelta pupusa was the best I’ve ever had. It alone earned this review an extra star. The meat in general was under seasoned and tough. The sausage was a bit too salty. I would go back but only for pupusas

So I have been there on Sundays only but I do love the Cabana! The food I have tried so far is excellent and the drinks are delicious. And the whole price structure is excellent. I have had the pupusa(both cheese and pork) and they were delicious) and I had the chicken quesadilla and it was loaded with chicken. I really did love the place and look forward to when I get to try more and more things.

This is an undiscovered gem in the neighborhood that is off of the beaten tourist path. The pupusas are very rich. Coleslaws and horchata are excellent. Chips are crisp and salsas taste fresh. The owner seemed very accessible to his customers in that he walked around and answered our questions.

La Cabana is a hole-in-the wall catering primarily to Latin American immigrants, especially those from El Salvador. Some friends took us here one night after a late night bar crawl. We danced, we ate, we drank. The food was great and the drinks were strong. I particularly enjoyed their pupusas and a spicey cabbage dish they served as a side. I could eat that all night. During the daytime they’re not very busy. At night it’s absolutely nuts. Upstairs is a large party space for private events. It’s very clean. The people are nice. It helps to speak a little Spanish here. In general the people are friendly and welcoming to all.

I’ve ordered take out from here numerous times as it’s really close to my office, but the convenience of the location is the biggest reason I keep going back. The food is hit or miss, which is not to say that there are certain items to choose to avoid, but that even things I enjoyed one day can be totally off the next. They do give you a lot of food to the point that it’s almost too much meat sometimes. I am a huge fan of their chips and guacamole which are both homemade, fresh, and delicious. The rice on all of their plates tends to be a smidge too salty. One annoyance for me is that because the owners and employees are Salvadorian it can be very difficult to place an order over the phone in English. There are people there that speak English, but I have been hung up several times when trying to place an order over the phone. I do wish that my Spanish weren’t so rudimentary, and I certainly don’t think they owe it to me to speak the same language, but it has made it a little difficult to order or ask questions about things from time to time. I’m sure I’ll continue to order from here as long as my office is on this block, but doubt I’ll come searching for it after that.

This Latin American restaurant belongs to the same group that runs Las Placitas on 8th St SE and La Villa on 14thNW. Tucked away in the upper Tivoli neighborhood(north of Columbia Heights), La Cabana is largely an unknown venue to the general public. The clientele is predominately local Latinos but that doesn’t mean that the food is more authentic. La Cabana functions more as a late night social gathering with Karaōke. There’s no reason to venture this far for Latin American but La Cabana is a great late night option by default after last call at the Red Derby. I recommend the El Tipico($ 7.95), which includes a chicken tamale, pupusa, plantain, yuca, salad, beans and rice, as the best value. [Original Visit: March 13, 2009]
