Georgetown Inn

This hotel is an awesome location, it’s old fashioned and rooms are nice and large. Service is also great. Only complaint is the walls are paper thin you can easily hear the room next door.

It seems that not all rooms have been renovated yet — my rating applies to the renovated rooms so you may want to specifically request one when booking.

As others have noted, the location is great.
In reading about the history of the hotel, I thought it would be worth trying, while keeping the mindset that it is a historic icon and perhaps the inconvenience of outdated faucets, and a creaky bed could be seen as part of the ambiance. Heck, if President Kennedy stayed here, it must have some class! Right?
The room I stayed it seems to have been updated when compared to those described in other reviews. However, I’m not sure that the update even compares to a Motel 6! Bare minimum would best describe the room. There is one picture, but the remaining walls are bare. No headboard on the bed, the blinds are the old vertical plastic slats once found on sliding glass doors in the late 80, s and when I opened them, a slat fell off!
The bathroom has no hooks or shelves what so ever, just a shower, tub, and toilet. Without a hook to place my towel while showering, I looped it over the shower rod (after wiping down the rod) and mid shower, the rod fell into the tub! There is no where to place my makeup bag, not even a glass to put my toothbrush in!
I will however say, the room was quiet, clean and the bed of average comfort. If I was paying Motel 6 prices, it would be fine, but at the cost of a nicer hotel, it’s simply not worth the money.

We were delighted with our stay here. Everyone who works here is friendly, helpful, and very cool (in the good way), from the desk staff, parking guys, manager, housekeepers. The place was perfectly located for our first visit to Georgetown, a short walk to the charming canal, the hotel is surrounded by restaurants, shops, a great old school ice cream place, book shop, post office, a unique French bakery down the street for breakfast pastries or lunch, and all the cobblestone back streets of Georgetown. A clean efficient city bus stops right in front of the hotel and it’s an easy interesting ride to downtown DC, Union Station, and the Mall. We had a room on a higher floor facing the street and it gave us a distant view of the Washington Monument. We would highly recommend this place and would stay there again.

Ok, so, we wanted to stay one more night in DC. I went to Unilocal. Georgetown inn said ½ off for Memorial Day so I called the 800# listed. I asked the reservationist about it and he came back with the rate would be $ 65 with free parking. I replied, really? $ 65 for the night? He said yes mam, $ 65. Sounded great… off we were for the night. We get there and were told by a very nice front desk lady, Nicole, that the rate was $ 153. So I went on to explain what I was told. She did everything she could but no results. She said she would check us in and try to fix this before her shift was over. We go to our room and WOW. Shocked is more like it. A tiny crowded room with carpet coming up in spots, tv in a bad position to watch from a broken down chair, remote not working all the time, coffee maker didn’t work… I could go on and on but I won’t. I was told no deal after we had checked in and it was just to late to leave. Nicole said her manager would listen to the recording of my conversation with the guy that made the reservation and get back to me in a few days. So now I have to pay $ 153 and hope I will be refunded the difference. How frustrating is THAT!!! So I learned a very important lesson. Don’t call the $ 800 #. Call the hotel directly, repeat everything they say, and be a careful traveler!!! Really bummed!!!

Although this place sweats charm, it is also lacking in new world standards.
Upon checking in I was greeted by friendly staff, but once I got to my room I realized that there were 2 outlets in the entire room. They had an «Engineer» come up and install a outlet box for me.
After dinner across the street, I was getting ready for bed. As a true NewYorker, I was talking and apparently our walls are quite thin. I got a rather rude phone call from downstairs asking if everything was ALRIGHT and if I was intentionally disturbing the floor. Dumbfounded I proceeded to explain to the night man that as I was explaining Pavlov’s Hierarchy of Needs at 1130 pm in avid detail didn’t require a disturbance call, and if anything he might have been enlightened by the intellectual conversation.
Before bed I had placed the breakfast card on my door, and checked off the box for 630am. I had to leave at 7am for a flight. 635am, no breakfast, 640 no breakfast. I called room service and they open at 630 so they weren’t prepared yet. Why do you have a 630am box?
They brought my breakfast up which was completely wrong at 655 am and the room service lady hung up on me, after staying forget it we won’t charge.
I go downstairs to check out and I have been charged. Now I am fuming, and late. After hemming and hawing, they removed the charge and I was on my way.
Is it quaint like a bed and breakfast yes. Does it need updating, yes. Does The Georgetown Inn require an attitude adjustment. I’d say YES.

A few weeks ago was my 3^rd time staying here. If it wasn’t for the location I’d be given this place 1 star. The previous two visit were nice, old style and smaller rooms and bathrooms that went with the charm of an older building.
The last stay was vastly different. We stayed on the 2^nd floor in a more modernized room. It was extremely odd to say the least. Hardware floors, modern decorations, modern bathroom took away from the charm.
One of the bathroom light fixtures was broken and held together with masking tape, pictures were hung oddly on the wall and in the middle of the night I woke to the air conditioning register dripping and leaking water all over the floor.
I went to the front desk to inform and they sent their maintenance guy up who opened the register and put in a metal buffet tray to collect the water. Great fix.
One of the closet doors would not open because it hit the drooping ceiling.
On the plus side — free wifi, newer HDTV, and it was clean. I expect more than this for the rates the Georgetown Inn charges. Sadly, this place is on the decline.
All in all, I’ll be looking for a better place to stay next time I’m in DC.

Holy !!! For 300 a night, I expect to not stick to the floor, have crumbs in the bed and mold on the wall. Was looking for an outlet and the giant orange construction extension cord under the bed helped. After the neighbors started on round 2 of their festivities at 8:30 pm I called the front desk to change rooms. They said of course we can move you to a nicer quieter floor. Um why was I not there in the first place? I’m on a corporate account. Not spring break.
Plus I seriously think there’s some money exchanging hands in the rooms/​bar. 2^nd floor is like grand central.
Second room was still sticky, had the extension cord solution, but was WAY nicer. Looks like it had been slightly renovated. If you stay here ask for high floors. But still… NOT WORTH PRICE.

Located in an awesome area close to everything but was rather disappointed. The rate we were supposed to get was doubled when we checked in. The valet was overwhelmed so when multiple people pull in at the same time, the entrance is blocked. That meant we had to drive around the block multiple times while the valet parked the other cars. We would have been blocking 2 lanes of traffic if we tried to wait. As far as housekeeping. Our room was never cleaned. No towels were replaced. We had to call for fresh towels. And although I didnt expect turn down service, the hotel book said they had it. We did not have turn down service either night. The worst part was the mold growing on the tiles in the shower and a dirty qtip in the hallway to our room that was there all weekend. They did have quick and amazing room service. Food was outstanding :) With my daughter possibly looking to attend school in the area, I am thinking we should stay somewhere else in the future.

I don’t really understand the very negative reviews. Like all have written the location is perfect being on a street with wonderful bars, restaurants and shops. Yes the hotel is dated but not atrocious. My room has nice furnishings and the bed is wonderful.
Here some oddities. While my tv has every imaginable channel the picture is fuzzy – don’t know why. The internet is very spotty but free – unlike the past. My bathroom is small but for the money, it’s not bad. There is a marble counter top and nice flooring. True, the shower is not opulent or totally up to date but it isn’t appalling.
I feel some of the reviewers here expect this place to be the Ritz Carlton at ¹⁄₃ the price. This is a nice alternative to the $ 500/​night hotels but you get what you pay for.
One more surprising element is how attractive the bar scene and restaurant are. The place was hopping when I arrived and as I go to bed, it is still hopping.

Before I booked a reservation here, I thoroughly read about all the pros and cons of the Georgetown Inn and, to my eternal shame, I stayed here anyway. What a mistake. Yes, it’s nice to be able to stay at a place in central Georgetown that’s close to the University. Yes, it’s nice to stay at a place that has the Daily Grill downstairs just off the lobby so that food and beverages are taken care of. But no, it’s not nice to stay at a place that has obviously skimped on so many basic improvements over the years that guests like me are offended by staying here. This is an independent hotel that has coasted on its reputation and routinely agonizes and antagonizes its guests because of its lack of basic amenities.
The Georgetown Inn looks great from the outside, but is falling apart internally.
I booked five nights here as part of Georgetown University’s «Parents Weekend.» Not only does the Georgetown Inn not have a Georgetown University rate, but it jacks up the prices of its rooms by at least $ 100/​night during events like this. I was robbed.
I had an inclination that things would not go well here when, on the morning of my late-​night check in after a cross-​country flight, I called the front desk to reconfirm my reservations for an Executive King room in a quiet part of the hotel and to request additional clothes hangers be supplied in the closets before our arrival. The hapless front desk clerk told me that she was unable to provide extra clothes hangers to an «empty room» prior to arrival but that this could be addressed when we checked in. When I pointed out that we would be arriving close to midnight, i.e. when housekeeping services were not available, I was assured that this would not be a problem. What a joke!
When we arrived, things started to unravel immediately. The «Executive King» room I had booked was room # 501. The bed was smaller than a queen. It was tiny and uncomfortable. The room was broiling hot and the air conditioning/​heating HVAC was ineffective. The more we tried to cool the room down by turning the controller to «cool» and «high» the more the unit rattled, at times uncontrollably loud. Sleep was not possible that night. Despite my advance request, there were no additional clothes hangers in the room. We called down to the front desk. Unfortunately, the phone in our room #501 was labeled #502 and when the front desk called back, we couldn’t hear them and they couldn’t hear us. I went out into the hallway, found the housekeeping room next door unlocked and took lots of clothes hangers from there into our room. (I’m sorry, Georgetown Inn: do not say it’s not possible to handle this simple request in advance.) So upon check in, our room was miserably hot, the air conditioning didn’t work, and the windows which are clearly marked «Do Not Open» are impossible to open. We sweated through an uncomfortable night without sleep.
The next morning, we switched rooms to #407. Thank god, it was a real King Bed as advertised. But the air conditioning/​heating system still didn’t work and continued to pump out hot and stuffy air. We complained to the front desk. Maintenance «fixed» the problem by turning off the heating/​system and opening the windows to let some fresh air in. Very, very lame. (Oh, by the way, the windows in this hotel are like guillotines. Impossible to open, but it you attempt to slide them apart, be very, very careful or you risk losing fingers.) It was still a better room, but anything facing the front of the hotel and Wisconsin Avenue is going to get blasted by street noise. The «Five Guys» hamburger restaurant directly across the street blasted loud music until 1AM, buses started running at 5:30AM and construction started directly across the street at 6AM. Unbelievable. Remember my incorrectly-​labeled phone from my previous room? This room’s phone… the phone for room #407, was labeled 502. Not only is this inexcusable, it’s a safety hazard.
Then there was the issue of our room door in #407. It didn’t work. It often took twenty or thirty swipes of our key card to unlock the door each and every time we tried. (Security said this was caused by my placing our room key card in my wallet next to our credit cards!) but this happened repeatedly with newly-​issued room key cards supplied by the front desk. At one point, the door lock stopped working entirely, and wouldn’t lock at all as we tried to leave the room. We called down to the front desk on our cellphones because of the inability of the room phone to work properly and security once again told us it was our fault. Very lame.
Overall, the rooms are oddly shaped. The bathrooms are tiny and just plain weird. The toilet is extremely low. Maintenance has not put a high priority on the bathrooms.
The staff (mostly) tries hard and means well. But they are in over their heads. They can’t possibly help guests enjoy their stay when the deck is stacked against them like this.
It would take an act of god to get me to stay here again.

After reading a lot of reviews about this hotel, I thought I’d just take my chance since I got a good deal with free parking through my amex card. I have mixed reviews about my stay in this hotel.
The location is as perfect as it can be — right on Wisconsin Avenue where all the restaurants and trendy stores are located. The major M Street is only a block away and Washington Harbor is in a walking distance from the hotel. There’s a metro stop/​circulatory right in front of the hotel which takes you to Union Station via M Street, downtown, china town, Smithsonian Museums and the Mall so I’d strongly suggest you to take that mode of transportation ($ 1 per ride or $ 3 for a day pass) rather than a taxi or your car — Saves a lot of money and time.
Despite it’s ideal location, the hotel is pretty old and needs a overall «MAKEOVER». The bathrooms as well as the room itself needs a lot of updating. I could see molds on the corners of our room ceiling and our bed post was broken and childishly repaired. The TV’s are one of those old models and none of the channels are clear enough to watch.
I would recommend this hotel for it’s ideal location and only if you get a good deal.

This is probably the worst hotel we have ever patronized. We have given Georgetown Inn so many chances, hoping they will improve, but unfortunately, to no avail. Rooms are dirty, dilapidated. Service is poor. My husband has now forbid me to patronize them ever again and our daughter attends college there and it’s the most convenient location to stay. I booked a room for our daughter and her friend. Paid for a more expensive room and requested a higher floor. My daughter said they were on a lower floor (worst rooms) and the room had not been renovated in ages. Furniture was chipped, dusty, dirty, same experience we have had over and over.
Seriously, do not patronize this hotel… when I called to complain, there was no apology, just a justification. Unacceptable.

Before I stayed at this hotel (for business travel– not my choice) I was a bit worried it would be a horrid experience because of the negative reviews. I asked my boss about it, and he told me it was decent, and so I shrugged off the bad reviews. When I arrived I was relieved to find out my room was well-​put together, clean, and cool (I visited this past July). For the week I was there that’s how the room remained: I had absolutely no problems with the air conditioner, my room was always supremely cleaned when I got back in at night, the staff was friendly and helpful, room service was prompt, and I slept comfortably in a quiet atmosphere (which was extremely important for me as I had traveled from Los Angeles and it was difficult to fall asleep at night).
My colleague, however, who also stayed there that week, had an entirely different experience. She told me her room was dirty, and that she actually stepped on an earring! Ugh! I never got to see her room, but I do trust her opinion.
I’m not sure why her experience her room was so worse than mine. I could chalk it up to a difference in perception, but her description truly horrified, and I imagine I would have been as grossed out as her. Still, I can only rate based on MY experience and what I saw, and so I have to give the Georgetown Inn a good rating.

The location is great and the room was pretty nice. I felt that it was a little dated and wasn’t a fan of not being able to control the air conditioning. It was nice for the price though and we enjoyed staying right in the heart of things in Georgetown.
The staff was friendly and we thought that everything was appropriate for a historic hotel in the heart of Georgetown.

I stayed there this summer (July) because my daughter was getting married at Halcyon House (within walking distance).
Very convenient location.
Unfortunately that’s about the only nice thing I can say about it. When we arrived it was really hot and the room smelled musty. There was a sign in the room about not using the air-​conditioning. We turned on the fan which was really loud. We tried to open the window and couldn’t so we finally got the front desk to send s/​o to open it. We spent several nights sleeping with a loud fan and street noise.
The next morning at about 6:30 or 7 am the fire alarm went off. We dashed down the stairs. When we got downstairs it turned out it wasn’t even a fire drill. It had gone off by accident from what we were told– something about a problem in the kitchen. The elevator didn’t work so we climbed the stairs all the way back up– we were on a high floor.
To add insult to injury, when I got home I realized I had left my keys and a small cord for my camera in the bedside drawer. I called and asked the hotel to send them to me. They waited over a week and after the whole week had gone by sent the package by next day FedEx (great judgment!). After three months had gone by I finally got a charge for over $ 80 on my credit card. I was quite shocked and asked for a copy of the FedEx invoice It was based on a dimensional weight of over 5 lbs. The actual weight of the package was listed as about 2 pounds. Go figure.
In any event I wouldn’t stay there again or recommend it it anyone. It is embarrassing enough that I suggested it to my family and several other members of the wedding party. Those who were close enough to me to tell me the truth of what they thought echoed my one star rating.

With the mixed reviews here, I wasn’t sure what to expect so imagine my surprise when Rob and I stayed here over New Year’s and found the inn to be exactly what we were looking for. Quaint and charming in a great location. It was very reasonably priced without skipping on anything. The mattress was comfortable. Bedding was pristinely clean. I’d mentioned wanting a nice view and our window gave us a nice view of one of the smaller streets of Wisconsin Ave, The staff was friendly and efficient. The Daily Grill attached to the inn was great for grabbing a drink after an afternoon walk. The bathroom was small but well put together with red accents making it very elegant.
All in all, I’d stay here again in two seconds.

Nice spacious room with very comfortable beds.
The Daily Grill is the associated restaurant. Rude staff and slow service — skip it. There are tons of restaurants outside the hotel.
The «business center» is only useful if you plan on printing your boarding pass. It is too small and expensive to use as a longer term work area.
The «fitness center» is apparently here only to allow the hotel to claim they have one. It has two treadmills and a reclining bike.
The front desk is incapable of validating the room key card for more than 24 hours at a time, so get used to constantly asking them to update the card.

This should be a four-​star place. The location is good, the rooms are spacious, the staff is friendly and attentive, and best yet, each bed comes with several pillows of varying thickness, so you don’t end up with the classic hotel stiff neck from super-​thin or rock-​hard pillows.
But… no.
I’ll list my complaints in decreasing order of severity.
First: this is a couple-​hundred-​dollars-​per-​night, and they charge for wireless internet? That’s utter crap. If Motel 6 and Super 8 have found a way to have free wireless, i cannot believe that a nicer place like Georgetown Inn really has to nickel and dime their guests like this. That alone knocked the first two stars off.
Second: Housekeeping entered our room and cleaned it despite the Do Not Disturb tag. I hate having my room cleaned for me, i hate having my towels moved so i can’t tell which washcloth i used on my face and which on my feet. I don’t need strangers to make my bed or fluff my pillows. I can go three days with the same towels, and it’s not like i track in enough dirt that i need the carpet vacuumed. That’s why i leave the ‘Do Not Disturb’ tag up. I’m pretty sure they’re not illiterate. Perhaps they meant well. But i left the damn tag up on purpose, and they ignored in on purpose (they can’t have just not noticed it, since they carefully moved it to the inside of the doorknob after ignoring it).
Third: So most people probably think i’m weird for listing this after the other two, but here goes: the first night we were there, we were woken up at 3am by a rodent eating through the paper wrapping of some cookies in my laptop bag. We scared it away, threw out the bag of cookies, moved all other belongings from the floor to on top of various furniture, and went back to bed. In the morning, we told the front desk staff, and they promptly moved us to a new (nicer) room at no additional charge, comped us breakfast, apologized profusely, etc. So one the one hand, super-​gross that they have an unchecked rodent problem, but on the other, i live in Manhattan, i expect everyone to have a rodent problem. At least they handled it well.
There are other minor complaints, like that housekeeping starts vacuuming vacated rooms at 9am on Saturday, and the walls are thin enough that it will easily wake a light sleeper. But really, for $ 200+/night, you can probably find a place without rodents and disobedient housekeeping, and maybe even one with free internet.

Fine hotel in a great location that comes with a high price. No complaints with the room, bed or service. I had a problem with my bill that the hotel has been slow to correct. I’ve had to make several phone calls to accounting to get my bill fixed and it still hasn’t happened. If you stay here be sure to check your credit card statement against your receipt. I was overcharged — the hotel claimed it was phone charges and water, neither of which I used during my one night stay. Beware.
