Field English Custom Tailors

My husband had four suits that required tailoring. We have had previous good experiences with another nearby tailor but brought these to Field English Custom Tailors based on a recommendation.
Three of the suits were of the same designer (the «B“ig German one) and one was Swedish. Three to four weeks later, all four suits were done.
The word which describes the quality of Mr. Field’s work? Impeccable.
The suits now fit as if they were custom made. Please keep in mind that the three Big German suits are all of the similar cut, while the Swedish one is more more of a Euro type cut (slimmer, shorter). Mr. Field managed to respect the designers’ aesthetic for the two very distinct styles, while ensuring that each suit fit my husband perfectly.
Does this type of expertise cost more than the «tailor» at your local dry cleaners? Of course it does. If you want cheap work that looks cheap, go to the dry cleaners. If you want your off the rack designer suit to fit as if it were custom made for you, spend the money and go to Field. We will be back. (And, in fact, we already have been.)

Excellent for bespoke suits (i.e., fully hand-​made), with clear superiority over made-​to-​measure even from top-​of-​the-​line manufacturers like Hickey Freeman. Field’s work on outside alterations that you bring into him are costly because they are done to the same exacting standards, so it’s up to you how much the quality matters to you. I’ve tried lower-​cost alteration shops in the area and they are not as good, except for the simplest of jobs like shortening the length of pants.

Gave him 2 stars cause he finished my suits on time.
But only 2 stars because he charged me $ 981 dollars for them. Did not tell me how much it will cost me before hand. I didn’t ask either cause I was thinking well, I need it done and how expensive can it be? I’m willing to pay for them since they are nice suits. But turns out, it is really really expensive! I was shocked! I went to other place second time around with about same amount of clothing, and guess what? It was $ 260.
Good work I guess, expensive rent at DC, but I totally think it is a scam.
Ask how much you are paying ahead of time ALWAYS!!!

Really horrible work combined with crazy expensive prices. Avoid at all costs. The work took forevor, was really poor and I had to have redone by someone else, and to top it all off it was crazy expensive.
There are way too many tailors in the DC area to tolerate poor service, poor work and horrible prices.

Definitely not the fastest or cheapest place to get clothes tailored, but this is the place you’ll want to go with complex alterations. I got three jackets fixed up (collar gaps, sleeve tapering, etc.), and they all look great.
Plus it’s nice to hang out in a shop where all of the accessories are hand made and the staff can talk for hours about craftsmanship, fabrics, construction, etc.
Field is the kind of place where you just want to hang out with a glass of scotch and talk shop about menswear all day.
I’ll definitely return when I need serious alterations for suits and jackets.

Recently worked with Mr. Field and must say I’m extremely pleased. The cost to have a custom suit made to order is substantially more than your traditional suits off the rack, but there is a reason for it. The quality of fabric, the customizations, and the personalization of these suits all bring your closet a style and level of comfort that you truly won’t find any other place in the world.
Bottom Line — Go Bespoke with Field.

Give Mr. Field all of your money, trust me. He will whip up something truly top of the the line for you. Also, the concept of one national currency is on its way out.

Will is the best tailor in the area. It’ll take some time and cost a bit more money than your run-​of-​the-​mill shop, but his work is great and he’s a pleasure to talk with. I wouldn’t take serious alterations anywhere else.

These folks are first-​rate in every respect. Before moving to New York, I lived in Washington for several years. During that time, William and his late father tended to all of my tailoring and alternation needs, with expertise and attention on par with the world’s finest bespoke tailors and haberdasheries. As it happens, I am returning to Washington for work, and I look forward to returning to this fine establishment. I wish them all the best.

I read the reviews and called Fields to make an appointment (they only take appointments) and was told they are not taking any alterations until June 13^th, 30 days away. Is it really worth waiting 4 weeks before getting an appointment then who knows how long before the alterations are complete.

Easily the best tailor in DC. As others have noted, they are a little expensive — so it’s probably best to save them for major repairs, or work that absolutely must be done right — but you definitely get what you pay for here.
The only complaint I’ve ever had about them is that they are often so busy that it can take a little bit of time to get your clothes back… I’d imagine, though, knowing Mr. Field, that he’d find a way to complete the work on time if you had a drop-​dead deadline.
Truly top-​notch!

This is not the place to go to have your pants hemmed or a button resewed. But, If you care about your clothing, and you care about how your clothing fits, then this is where you want to go for bespoke or significant alterations.
When I needed my wedding tuxedo fitted a mere two weeks before the date, Mr Field was the only tailor I considered. Not only did he do a superb job, but he finished with plenty of time to check the fit in case additional adjustments were necessary. Of course, they were not.

I have no reservations giving Mr. Field and his work my highest regard. I buy very fine english and italian garments and frequently have them tailored professionally. I have used numerous tailors before moving to DC about a year ago from NYC. He tailored my wedding suit for me in a short period of time and I have him to thank (as well as my beautiful wife) for some of the best photos ever! I will definitely use him again soon.

This place looks stuffy from the outside — old men’s club stuffy — but is far from that once you’re inside and talk to the staff! Do not be turned off by the ‘traditional’ (conservative) appearance.
I bought a friend a gift certificate for here, to have something custom-​made. He chose to have 2 bespoke shirts made, and we made an appointment to go in just before lunch on a weekend. They poured us a glass of wine, and explained there were several options… The gift certificate was for $ 500, so it didn’t specify what to buy. Because of this, the young woman helping us explained that they had «semi-​custom» and «custom» (bespoke) shirt options. The semi-​custom shirts allow you to choose the type of collar, cuffs, and general fit. You can choose from a wide selection of fabrics, though all of them are what’s I’d deem «business suit-​appropriate» — meaning mostly blues and whites.
For full-​custom shirts, they have fabric books bursting with colors and patterns and textures — even masculine florals, rainbow-​stripes, and cotton sateens. You have even more choice on the cuffs — e. g, which way the mitred edge faces.
The quality is amazing, and they stand by their work — their reputation is deserved.
There’s one problem I had — which is not an issue if you are buying off-​the-​rack… Despite my specifically telling the young woman who was helping us that we wanted BESPOKE shirts, she kept trying to sell us the semi-​custom shirts. «You get more for your money!» «They’re excellent quality!» Yes, I know that — but I wanted my friend to experience FUN — the whole EXPERIENCE — of having custom-​made clothing made for you.
I began to suspect the woman did not actually know HOW to measure someone for custom clothes — something that was backed up by the fact that when she asked him to try on some off-​the-​rack shirts to get an idea of what he liked/didn’t like, she said «Oh! This fits you perfectly! I can just take the measurements from it.»
I wanted to pull her aside right there and say «If you don’t know how to measure someone for a custom shirt, then find someone who does because for $ 275 each, I expect someone to actually MEASURE him», but it would have ruined the experience for my friend, and he didn’t know any better — but I did, since I’d had clothing made.
Fields has a reputation to protect. I would hope they would train all their employees either to measure clients, or that in the interest of good customer service that if one associate doesn’t know how to do something they would ask for help or at least be honest.
I am still angry two months later, but I waited to see the final product before I wrote a review. The shirts are beautiful — but the experience left a bad taste in my mouth. Wouldn’t hesitate to buy other things there, however, so I’ll stick with the 4 stars…

Due to suffering from CVC (Chronic Vertical Challenge), I have to have most of my suits or sport jackets shortened among other typical alterations. I have been able to bring Mr. Fields various off the rack items and each and every time, my clothing comes out looking custom! I have been nothing but pleased.

Will – handles all of my suits and alterations. As a short italian man with stubby legs, nothing ever fits off the rack. Next suit, I’m getting the Skull and Cross Bones satin liner in the shop.

The best tailor I have ever been to. Hands down. The only reason it doesn’t have 5 stars is the cost. I had some alterations done to two jackets and one pair of pants and it was upwards of $ 400. The work was worth every penny, but it was a bit more then typical.

I was disappointed with the quality of work I got here. it seemed it was done last minute and the stitching was sloppy. And they were late, as one other reviewer pointed out. Since they were voted best in DC by the City Paper I was hoping to have a better experience than the two other DC tailors I’ve been to. Turns out they were overrated! And not any different from the others… I won’t be returning — don’t believe the hype!

Great job, very professional. It’s a pleasure to work with such professional and pleasant people.
However, just make sure you confirm delivery dates. They missed a date on one of my jobs and had to fedex it to me. Bad that they missed the date. But I have to say, I was very impressed that they took responsibility for their mistake, knew that I would have nothing to wear in NY, and rectified the situation by sending the job to me in NY via fed ex saturday delivery.

Mr. Field does tremendously high-​quality work for both some of the edgiest and crustiest of the upper-​crust male fashionistas in the DC area. I stumbled upon this small shop as the result of a personal research project to find out where the most stylish Washingtonians went to get clothing made and altered. After giving projects to a number of different shops around town I found Field’s to be by far the best (and one of the most long-​established!)
Take your business here and you will not be disappointed.
