Gorgeous building with much history and much to offer. Cooperative living at its finest.

Well something would be wrong if I gave the place that I’ve lived at for the past six years less than five stars. Since I moved here in June 2008, I’ve been very satisfied with my purchase at the Chastleton. I really didn’t have to do much, as my unit was totally renovated when I bought it. Really what makes this place such a good place to live is its location. It’s right there on 16th St. with a lot of metro accessibility as well as being very walkable to Dupont or Logan on 14th St. or U St. That’s something I definitely appreciate when I have guests over. The architecture outside sets of Chastleton apart from a lot of other residential buildings on the street or in the nearby area. The ballroom is a great place to host a party or even a smaller event, and it’s not very expensive to do so since it’s an amenity of living there. The room is great, though unfortunately you can’t grill. I’ve heard from others that the fees here are relatively high compared to other co-ops around the area, but I really don’t know the specifics. Knowing what little I do know, that’s probably true. Overall, I love living in the Chastleton and I would recommend it to anyone.

The Chastleton changed from rentals to a cooperative in 2007. I purchased a studio unit after the conversion. I have been quite happy with the managment. Recently they decided that the company supplying the laundry machines wasn’t doing a good job, so they replaced it with a company offering better service — now you can pay using a credit card and get a refund if the dryer fails to dry your clothes. And the new machines are actually cheaper! The building has a ton of space for entertaining — I’ve hosted parties in the ballroom, on the roof deck, and in the courtyard.
