Charlies Bar & Grill was a pleasant surprise for breakfast. I ordered the salmon breakfast special with grits, scrambled eggs and toast. The salmon croquette was delicious. The grits were creamy and the eggs scrambled to perfection. This restaurant is a jewell in upper Northwest Washington, DC

Breakfast was crappy. Some dude was passed out in one of the booths. The décor seemed new, but kinda lipstick-on-a-pig. I’ll forget about this place soon. I had oj and an egg sandwich. Meh.

Stopped in after a long absence and was pleasantly surprised by the changes. A fresh coat of paint, a few pictures on the wall and a plasma screen over the bar can work wonders for a place! No longer much of a dive, the food here has improved tremendously. The fried shrimp special was great, not overly breaded and cooked just right, and the mac and cheese was fantastic, while the greens were merely OK. Their bottled beer selection includes Yuengling and Red Stripe. Charlies is just what the doctor ordered for Shepherd Park: a friendly neighborhood watering hole.
