Cato Institute

The Cato Institute is the premier conservative, Libertarian think tank in the country.
Not only does their work protect the civil liberties of Americans, they offer real private sector solutions for the country’s economic woes. They educate Americans on economic and political philosophies that encourage individual freedom.
Laissez faire? Not quite. A free market is the harshest market. While Keynesian thinkers at Heritage and CAP offer schemes to transfer fiat money to big corporations, the Hayekian model offers no cronyism. Free markets are free to flourish and free to fail, no matter how big they are.
I will be making sure the Cato Institute is included in my charity giving. It’s the best investment I can make for my country.

How in the hell can an organization that espouses an amoral, laissez– fare capitalist philosophy be non-​profit?
How can one think that the Cato Institute fights for the public good when it was co-​founded by oil baron Charles Koch, one half of the infamously right-​wing-​cause-​funding Koch Brothers?
How can one with a conscience support a group that has been financed by Wal-​Mart, Exxon, Chevron, Chase Manhattan Bank, Pfizer, and other massive corporations?
How can one who’s paying attention to the weather back an organization that denies the realities of global warming?
How can one who lives in Washington D.C., a predominantly black city with a poverty rate of nearly 19% (as of 2009), swear by the institute when it vigorously, viciously advocates the demolition of government programs that are in place for the poor, believes in ending Affirmative Action, and condones discrimination as long as it is practiced by private companies?
Speaking of privatization, how can anyone with elderly family members align themselves with a think tank that wants to take Social Security to the casinos of Wall Street?
Jose Pinera, advisor to the ruthless Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet and endorser of the idea of privatizing Social Security, is a Senior Fellow with the Cato Institute.
Rupert Murdoch, the fascist behind that open sewer of misinformation and conservative bias known as Fox News (home to Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity among other unsavory media whores), serves on the Cato Institute’s board.
Yes, they also support gay marriage and drug decriminalization, but at what price? What good are those things without safety nets, price controls, and limits on corporate power to go along with them?
Hey, I guess if you’re an aspiring plutocrat, you need a place where you can mingle, y’know?

Of all the think-​tanks I’ve been to in DC, the Cato Institute is my favorite, mainly because I agree with their classical liberal/​libertarian philosophy. They host good policy events, usually during lunchtime, that are thought-​provoking and interesting. They have one policy event at night that discussed libertarianism in popular culture which delved into South Park and the Incredibles movie. As the previous reviewer mentioned, they provide a free lunch after their policy events and sometimes free beer and wine if it’s held at night. The building itself is beautiful. It looks like a building inside a building with its glass exterior.

How do you like to spend your lunch hours? Working through them? Listening to your lazy co-​workers complain about their jobs? Well there’s something better out there!
The Cato Institute offers educating — and usually quite interesting — lectures at noon on more weekdays than not. And they come with a free lunch afterwards! (And you heard there was no such thing…). Whether you fancy yourself a libertarian (Cato promotes classical liberal virtues such as small government, market-​based solutions and individual rights), or a dyed-​in-​the-​wool big government FDR acolyte, the Cato discussions will get you thinking.
Bettering yourself AND getting a free meal. Not bad for a couple hours investment.
