Capitol Groove Fest

Not sure why no one has reviewed this event (other than the fact that less than a thousand people attended), but for this music fan, the Capitol Groove Fest was a mixed bag, with more negatives than positives. For starters, I was charged more at the door than the advertisements suggested (for non pre-​paid tickets). The security staff at the entrance was borderline rude. Having never been to this venue, I was hoping for some grassy areas, but it’s nothing but hot asphalt and more hot asphalt. The bands were generally marginal at best, with the exception of Drop Electric, which was AWESOME! The band Redline Graffiti played some nice music, but their front man should probably leave the singing to the second tier guy, who had reasonable pipes. Drinks and food weren’t bad, and there were Cornhole games, which was fun. It was literally across the street from a Metro stop, so accessibility was great. Sound quality from the «stage» was okay for some sounds, not so great for others. I hope that this event will catch on more next year, and I definitely hope that Drop Electric will once again headline. Their atmospheric mood rock ranges from electronic rock fusion to alternative to something that isn’t quite definable, but is definitely listenable. I don’t know that a fledgling band has ever given me goose bumps, but this band did! The musical arrangements and the musicianship were first rate, and sounded far better than their apparent years. From the lead singer’s (Krissy) unique and compelling vocals to the bowed guitar and back and forth style, from up tempo to down tempo and back again, they may just be the second coming of the incredible icelandic band, Sigur Ros. I just bought their EP on iTunes, and it’s fantastic! A so-​so music festival (with potential), but a wonderful musical find!
