Specialties
Café Berlin has been serving traditional cuisine on Capitol Hill since 1985. It occupies the ground floor of three joined townhouses whose front yards serve as patios for outdoor dining in warm weather. The interior features a small bar and two prettily decorated dining rooms. Walking distance from Union Station and the Capitol, it draws politicians, congressional staffers, and tourists as well as a loyal following of neighborhood residents. The chefs at Café Berlin are German, as are the owners, so the traditional dishes are authentically prepared but with a lighter touch. Changing seasonal menus feature fresh asparagus in the spring, Bavarian dishes during Oktoberfest, and wild game in the winter. Desserts are made in-house, and the extensive repertoire includes apple strudel, black forest cake, and luscious cream tortes. The bar offers a selection of imported German beers and wines as well as cocktails.
History
Established in 1985.
Started by two German Frauen when Capitol Hill was still an area that was avoided after dark. The small, intimate restaurant is located on the basement level of three row houses, with a beautiful biergarten. The Frauen wanted to offer authentic German cuisine without the kitschy décor that tends to accompany German restaurants in the states. Staffing the kitchen with only chefs brought in from Germany, Café Berlin was established as THE place to go for delicious German cuisine in the area. In 2013, the original owners retired and sold to a couple that met and married while working as Chef and server at Café Berlin. While keeping the all German kitchen, the new owners have added more menu items based on local, seasonal produce and more authentic German specialties. Working with limited space, the German and Texan have expanded the beer list from 1 to more than 12 bottled beers while rotating a seasonal tap frecently. A facelift for the décor is planned in time for Oktoberfest!
