Broodjes & Bier

I chanced upon Broodjes & Bier sandwiches at one of their partner locations (local markets/​food shops). There was a group of energetic ladies wearing «Yum» t-​shirts standing by a table loaded with mini sandwiches and business cards. They make sandwiches! They cater! The group was very knowledgeable about their menu offerings, and explained their concept and flavors while I unabashedly sampled each.
My absolute favorite was the Haarlem («Naturally Cured Pastrami, Red Cabbage & Green Apple Cider Slaw and Dijon on Rye»), while my companion’s favorite was the Vondel Park («Prosciutto, 4 Month Aged Goat Gouda, Fig Jam, Balsamic Reduction & Arugula on Striatta»).
What is there not to love about the Haarlem? The pastrami is thinly and carefully sliced, which I love. The slaw was cold and crunchy. It had the perfect touch of vinegar from the dijon mustard to uplift the overall flavor profile of the sandwich, and paired nicely with the salty-​peppery pastrami and the subtle sweetness of the apple cider slaw. I went ahead and bought a full-​sized Haarlem sandwich for lunch, which was also tasty. The ratio of bread to filling in the full-​sized sandwich was just a tad too high on the bread (in comparison to the samples) but it could have been a fluke since these sandwiches are made by hand every day.
Everyone that knows me knows that I usually shy away from sandwiches because it’s hard to find a tasty one with the right balance of elements. Broodjes & Bier’s offerings may just be one of the few exceptions.

These broodjes are truly delicious treats. They take lunch and dinner to a whole new level. I wish I could eat one every day! Or two. The Vondel Park is my favorite, followed by the Paradiso. The Vondel Park has quickly become my favorite sandwich in general. The ingredients are super fresh and top quality. It makes a huge difference in the taste, plus you can tell the business owners really care about what their customers are eating. When stopping by Eastern Market, Broodjes and Bier is a must. Really, no matter where you are, if you can get there, you should go. They’re brand new and I’m super excited for them to stick around — can’t wait to see what’s next after such a strong start.

I first heard about Broodjes&Bier when they launched their Kickstarter campaign, so was excited for them to start selling. I went with 2 of my friends and sampled 3 sandwiches, or broodjes, if you may.
Classic. 18 month aged gouda, tomato, cucumber, red onion, mayo, dijon & arugula on a striatta roll. AMAZING. For someone who gravitates towards meat all the time, this vegetarian sammy packed a ton of flavor — um, 18 month aged gouda please? — and was very filling!
Vondel Park. Prosciutto, 4 month aged goat gouda, fig jam, balsamic reduction & arugla on a striatta roll. I’m not a big sweet person when it comes to meals so was worried that the fig jam might overpower my beloved prosciutto, but the goat gouda YUM and balsamic reduction cut the sweetness of the fig jam and created a great balance overall.
Jordaan. Apple & bacon chicken salad, tomato & arugula on a white country bread. DID SOMEONE SAY BACON? Sold. In addition, the chicken was very tender, I loved the green apple which gave it that crunch and refreshing flavor as well. We were all so full by the time we got to Jordaan so saved half of it for lunch the next day. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the bread didn’t get all soggy as I semi expected. Yay!
I normally don’t write really long reviews, but got a chance to speak with the founder of Broodjes & Bier, and was really impressed — I can’t wait for them to have their own shop! I’ll definitely be going back to grab a few more — I MUST try this bacon-​nutella-​strawberry heaven — broodjes!
